Dr. Kelsey Klausmeyer, ND – Autoimmune Disorders, Migraines, Allergies, Thyroid Disease, Digestive Disorders, Hormonal Imbalance, Infertility, Chronic Fatigue – Naturopathic Doctor – Wichita, Kansas

About Dr. Kelsey Klausmeyer, ND

Dr. Klausmeyer’s interest in medicine began at an early age after suffering a severe car accident. Conventional medicine saved his life but was unable to address the lingering health concerns that persisted long after the event. It was in natural medicine that Dr. Klausmeyer found solutions to the chronic conditions left from the

accident, which prompted him to pursue studies in natural medicine with a feverish devotion. Since that time he has completed massage therapy programs at two institutions (Total Health Works in Wichita, KS and Bellevue Massage School in Bellevue, WA), a bachelors of arts degree in medical anthropology and pre-med from Hampshire College, an apprenticeship in 5 Element acupuncture, certification in craniosacral therapy and a doctorate of naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University. In addition to these studies, he has attended many weekend workshops and medical conventions on various topics to offer his patients the very best medical care possible.

Central to Dr. Klausmeyer’s philosophy is to alleviate suffering and that illness is not without meaning. He takes the time to understand his patients’ stories and to help them discern meaning from sometimes difficult conditions. His goal is to empower patients to be proactive participants in their care and make healthy decisions in everyday life. He is excited to get to know you and work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your needs.

CranioSacral Therapy

Every day you endure stresses and strains which your body absorbs. Your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. This chronic tension can compromise the function of the central nervous system and the performance of nearly every other system of your body.

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Starting with the weight of about a nickel practitioners evaluate your internal environment to locate and release any restrictions they find. Releasing these restrictions can help to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, naturally eliminate pain and stress, strengthen your resistance to disease and enhance your health and well-being. Upledger Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is effective for a wide range of health problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Migraine and other Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension-related Disorders
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Emotional/Neurovascular Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Scoliosis
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Many Other Conditions

What To Expect From a Session?

A typical CST session will last about an hour, and takes place in a quiet room, with you remaining fully clothed and relaxed on a comfortable padded table. The therapist listens carefully with her hands to locate areas of tension or restriction, then, using gentle manual techniques will assist the body in releasing those restrictions. Craniosacral therapy may be used alone or combined with other subtle therapies to create powerful effects. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas the therapist is working on.

Naturopathic Medicine

Patients see Naturopathic doctors for many reasons. Some patients enjoy the extra time their ND spends with them to obtain a thorough history, listen to their story, provide medical counseling and explain their condition. Other patients feel safe seeing a holistic practitioner who has a medical education behind their recommendations. Whatever the reason, seeing a Naturopathic doctor can greatly improve your health and well-being.

How I can help you?

Problem specific visits/ wellness checks–to obtain assessment and treatment of a specific condition (such as food allergies, vitamin deficiencies and any healthcare concern) or to improve quality of health and well-being. Additional imaging and/or lab work and referrals to specialists may be necessary. Treatment may include botanical medicine, nutritional supplements, special dietary recommendations, exercise/ stretches, homeopathics, or any of the other services offered at InnerWorks.

Treatment focused visits– includes bodywork (craniosacral therapy, problem specific soft tissue massage), Naturopathic spinal manipulation and acupuncture for chronic conditions and overall well-being.

Nutritional counseling: provides additional support for patients’ with special diets.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease” is not always the best approach in medicine as real problems often develop slowly and quietly. Regular visits to a Naturopathic doctor can help ensure that you are preventing disease, listening to the messages your body is giving you and maximizing your health and Well-being. If you are already having symptoms, schedule a visit to obtain assessment and treatment. Additional imaging and/or lab work and referrals to specialists may be necessary. Treatment may include botanical medicine, nutritional supplements, special dietary recommendations, exercise/ stretches, homeopathics, or any of the other services offered at InnerWorks.

Once a treatment program has been established, focused visits include bodywork (craniosacral therapy, soft tissue massage, muscle energy stretching). Naturopathic spinal manipulation and acupuncture for chronic conditions and overall well-being. These treatment alleviate the effects of stress on the body, assist with emotional and psychological well-being and are particularly helpful in cases of trauma, PTSD, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries and conditions that conventional medicine has not satisfactorily treated.

In the next few months you will see additional Naturopathic services, such as:

Annual medical exams: female/male exams (including pelvic exam, pap smear, breast exam or testicular and prostate exam) lab work (lipids, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, chemistry and metabolic panels, CBC with differential and more as needed) and imaging as indicated. See our statement about insurance coverage.

Constitutional hydrotherapy, ultrasound and electric stimulation treatments.

Applied Kinesiology

This is a system of functional analysis and treatment of the mind-body. The patient is assessed with a simple biofeedback process. Findings and problems are thought of in five categories: Structural (e.g. muscles, joints), Chemical (e.g. sensitivities, nutrition), Organ Stress, Mental and Emotional Stressors,Electro-Magnetics (e.g. meridian/acupuncture imbalances). Corrections are made using gentle pressure on tissues, reflexes and acupoints; homeopathics, supplements and lifestyle changes are recommended. In addition, Dr. Kraskow uses several electrical devices including Computerized Body Assessment.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is one of the most interesting, effective and misunderstood types of treatment. The generally recognized founder of modern homeopathy is Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician who coined the term "Homeopathy" (From the Greek, "like" + "suffering") in 1796. I will often ask my patients if they have a basic understanding of homeopathy, only to find out that they have misconceptions about what homeopathics are and how they work. Many people think that any natural remedy found in a health food store is a homeopathic which is not true. Hence, this article is here to clarify some basics about homeopathy.

Homeopathics are in a completely different class than pharmaceutical medications, herbs, vitamins or minerals. These other remedies are primarily chemical in their nature. You take them into your body and they react chemically with your body's systems. Homeopathic remedies taken into the body are thought to interact "energetically and/or informationally".

They are actually dilutions of substances (rather than the substances themselves) that are imprinted energetically. So how does this work? It is based on "The Law of Similars" and "serial dilution".

The law of similars is also known as "like cures like". Here's how it works. You start with a substance that if ingested, would create a symptom–lets say a runny nose. A homeopathic manufacturer takes that substance and processes it with a method similar to shaking, called succussion. The mixture is diluted several times (serial dilution) until the final product no longer has even a trace of the original substance. But, it does have the energetic imprint of the original substance, and the body recognizes that imprint. In the case of the runny nose, the body recognizes the energetic imprint of the substance that would create the runny nose. This brings the body's attention to any runny nose issue, and then the body responds, making corrections as needed. I particularly appreciate the fact that the body is encouraged to do the actual correction. The list of uses for homeopathic remedies is endless.

One of the fascinating things about homeopathy is that while the process of creating a homeopathic described above is most typical, homeopathy can also start with substances that taken in their original form are beneficial. An example of this would be Echinacea, an herb used to support immune function. This herb may be used in a herbal form or a homeopathic form. The homeopathic form provides the energetic imprint, stimulating the body's immune system.

One of the most important uses of homeopathy is to assist with mental and emotional stressors. These remedies help change a person's perspective (e.g. reducing anger, fear, trauma etc.).

Because they are non-chemical, they are significantly safer than any other kind of remedy – Safe, Effective, Natural, Non-Addictive.

The choice of which homeopathic to be used can be complicated. It is often based on the many aspects of the symptomatic picture. As a Kinesiologist, I scan neurological reflexes to assist in the choice. In addition, I use a computer to assess and generate homeopathic remedies.

Sufficient Testosterone Makes Men Stronger And Muscular

Testosterone therapy is not just about enhancing muscle mass, but it improves overall performance of a man in routine life activities. In real, it’s an anti-aging formula that performs magically to remove the signs of aging while promoting youthfulness for longer years. Sexual relationship becomes enjoyable if testosterone is sufficient inside body.

Testosterone – The Reason For Masculine Properties

Testosterone hormone is mainly a male hormone released by testicles, though women also have little quantities of this hormone. It helps in regulating many body functions and maintaining a good shape. It works efficiently in the areas of

• Libido
• Bone Mass
• Sperm Count
• Distribution Of Fat
• Muscular Strength
• Production Of Red Blood Cells

Testosterone Deficiency

Like all other hormones, testosterone hormone also declines with age. The decline rate is 1%/year after 30 years of aging. Consulting an expert physician can help you out to determine the testosterone deficiency, also termed as Hypogonadism. You might get either a natural supplementation or a synthetic version of testosterone to get a balance.

How Does Testosterone Affect The Process Of Aging?

Sexual Performance:

Low testosterone levels result in poor sex drive, erectile dysfunction and sometimes infertility.

Insomnia

Testosterone deficiency affects the sleep patterns while leading to severe stage of insomnia.

Physician Affects

Testosterone deficiency causes more fat accumulation, weak muscles and bones, reduced strength, gynecomastia (tender breasts), and early hair loss.

Emotional Imbalance

Lowered testosterone level results in dwindling self confidence, poor motivation, depression attacks, and lack of concentration.

Testosterone Therapy – Secret Of Vitality And Youthfulness

Testosterone deficiency is treated well with testosterone therapy, provided expert support is there with you like that offered by Infinity Age. Improved vitality is apparent in men who have been taking testosterone supplementation for fighting against deficiency. Positive results are exposed by most of the studies conducted to show how testosterone therapy works for better health. There are some mixed results as well in which men have witnessed more strength and less muscle mass gain. It all depends on the right diagnosis, right prescription and right administration of medicines.

Testosterone Therapy Is Not Risk-Free – Consult Our Expert Physicians

Like other hormone therapies, testosterone therapy is also not risk-free. Main risks associated with testosterone therapy include the following:

• Acne (skin reaction)
• Breast enlargement
• Testicular shrinkage (cause of low sperm count)
• Benign prostatic hyperplasia (supporting prostate cancer)
• Sleep apnea (serious sleeping disorder with disturbed breathing)
• Polycythemia (more production of red blood cells leading to cardiac disease)

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy For Women

Optimize Your Physical State, Feel Like You Are In Your 30′s Again!

Aging is difficult enough for women without having to suffer from declining hormone levels. Women often complain of a diminished sense of well being, chronic fatigue, and a loss of libido just to mention a few hormone imbalance symptoms.

This is not necessary!

Once women realize they can restore their natural hormones (their bodies once made abundantly) with bioidentical hormones, they can restore their energy, feelings of well being, and sexuality.

Too many women have given up trying to find the right combination of estrogen and testosterone hormones. Once this hormonal balance is determined, combining hormone replacement with a healthy lifestyle and appropriate diet, will allow females to return to a healthy and vibrant lifestyle as well as maximize the years in which to enjoy it.
Women’s Hormone Deficiencies

For many women there is a tremendous void in treatment of menopause symptoms. Hot flashes and mood swings are just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the earlier signs and symptoms of estrogen deficiency are frequent waking at night. These sleep disturbances are one of the earliest symptoms of beginning hormonal deficiency. Many others are present, including such things as mental fogginess. A woman’s short-term retention may be dwindling and her concentration and focus isn’t as good as it used to be. Frequently, women may experience some loss of energy to the point that they actually slide into symptoms of chronic fatigue.

In addition, women may experience some mood swings and irritability, and at the extreme may actually develop feelings of depression. With the loss of energy and chronic fatigue, we also find ourselves unable to exercise as much as we have in the past, or to recover as quickly when we do exercise. We find ourselves sliding into increasing weight gain in spite of attempts at exercising. One that is not so frequently discussed is the loss of sexual drive. Not only is our energy level and sense of wellbeing diminishing, but anticipation and enjoyment of sexual activity is waning as well.

Unfortunately, so many times these symptoms are simply attributed to normal aging. From many physicians, it is assumed when we eradicate hot flashes and night sweats, we have alleviated the menopausal syndrome. All of these symptoms are frequently attributed to the normal aging process. While we cannot reverse the aging process, we can certainly optimize it by restoring the normal balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in the menopausal woman.

Extensive research has shown hormone replacement therapy may have additional benefits for women after menopause.
Description: http://www.infinityage.com/images/clear.gif
  • Memory loss and mental function. Studies have shown estrogen can protect against some memory loss and improve learning, even in some Alzheimer’s disease patients.
  • Colorectal cancer. Various studies have pointed to a decreased risk in colorectal cancer in women who take HRT.
  • Diabetes. HRT may help women with diabetes control their blood sugar levels better after menopause.
  • Incontinence. A decline in estrogen levels may contribute to incontinence. HRT can help restore the lining of the urethra help support the bladder.
  • Migraine. Many postmenopausal women report a decreased incidence of migraines after take HRT. However, women who had experienced migraines related to their menstrual period may report flare-ups of the headaches.
  • Urinary tract infections. Some women experience an increase in urinary tract infections during menopause. Researchers believe that the use of estrogen may help the body resist infection.
  • Teeth. Women who take estrogen are less likely to lose their teeth, because the same properties that help prevent bone loss apply to preventing bone loss in the mouth.
  • Vision. Evidence exists that HRT may help prevent glaucoma and macular degeneration, two common causes of blindness.

The Digestive Tract Truly Is Our Second Brain – By Dr. Screven Edgerton, OB/GYN – Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Doctor, Functional Medicine Doctor, Anti-Aging Doctor, Weight Management, Nutrition and Detoxification, Brain Wellness, Acupuncture Treatment – Austin, Texas

The Digestive Tract Truly Is Our Second Brain - By Dr. Screven Edgerton, OB/GYN – Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Doctor, Functional Medicine Doctor, Anti-Aging Doctor, Weight Management, Nutrition and Detoxification, Brain Wellness, Acupuncture Treatment – Austin, Texas

G.I. Health

The gastrointestinal tract is truly the second brain of our bodies.  Nearly all nutrition, vitamins, bioidentical hormones and medications must go through this system. If there is inflammation, disease, or irritation then individuals could be compromised.  Gut dysfunction can lead to poor absorption of nutrition and more.  You may have common symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation, bloating, and reflux but many patients have poor digestion without symptoms.

Did you know that many of the neurotransmitters that our brains use are made in the gastrointestinal tract? Approximately 70% of all serotonin is made in the gastrointestinal system.  This is the amino acid that virtually all anti-depressant technology is based upon.  If you have problems with your gut, it could affect your brain and your mood.

The majority of our immune system also lies within our gut.  A healthy GI system allows us to maintain the best defense against stress and illness.

We realize that if we address the dysfunction of the GI system, we will promote overall improved health.

We use DNA BASED tests to evaluate the presence of inflammation, immunity, bacteria, parasites, yeast and more.  This test far exceeds the capability of culture based analysis by detection of organisms that cannot be cultured. Correcting any problem here facilitates the proper function and absorption of the gut.  We then take the next step and recommend the right supplements to restore vitality to your GI tract.  We will show you what to take for normal digestion such as prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes.

FOOD ALLERGY TESTING is another way that we can evaluate and promote better GI health. As humans we are creatures of habit and often eat the same foods repetitively.  This however often pushes our system to become intolerant to these foods.  Inflammation can increase and the system/body can be compromised.  Testing for sensitivity to food has been beneficial for reducing IBS, improving immunity, losing weight, asthma, skin disorder, headaches, and more.

Unfortunately, the American diet is nutritionally poor.  Our food industry changes food so that they are processed or modified to stay on the shelf longer at the grocery store.  If you compound that with the fast food nation we have become, we are at a disadvantage even when we try to eat as healthy as possible.

By understanding the gastrointestinal tract and what the underlying problems may be, we can create a state of ultimate digestion plus maximal absorption for food, supplements, and medicines.

Here are 10 Rules to Promote Optimal Gut Function and Weight Loss

1. The “80/20” Rule If you don’t give yourself a break once in a while you will fall off your diet program.  Be diligent 80% of the time and give yourself a treat for the remaining 20%. (Example: one beer, a glass of wine, small dessert, etc)  Remember to regain your focus if you have the occasional indulgence.

2. The “Rule of Whites” Avoid white sugar, flour, rice and salt.  These things have little nutritional benefit and actually may strip your body of vital nutrients.  Strive to eat whole grain, brown rice, sea salt, and stevia type sugar substitute instead.

3. Eat Protein with every Meal Our bodies, brain, and muscles need protein for fuel and metabolic activity.  We should have a minimum of 20 grams with each meal.

4. Portion Control The American Diet is out of control!  We have grown up on huge portions and a supersize mentality.  Start focusing on eating smaller portions of better foods.  If you go out to eat, get in the habit of splitting a meal with a friend or taking half home.

5. YOU NEED WATER Most of us walk around dehydrated.  Water helps us detoxify our body.  Adequate water intake also reduces overeating.  Some of your hunger cravings could actually be thirst!  Divide your body weight (lbs) by 2.  That is the amount of ounces you should consume daily.

6. Journal your Calories and Exercise If you make an effort to record what your intake is on a daily basis then you are less likely to make poor choices. Documenting your exercise lets you see the calories you burn. Having a daily calorie goal gives you a target that will result in weekly weight loss. A variety of free internet sites and phone applications can assist you with documenting your foods and exercise.

7. Exercise You will not achieve your weight loss goals or attain optimal health without exercise. Start at your comfort level and then push yourself.  Strive for 40 minutes of exercise 5 days a week.  A variety of exercise will prevent you from becoming burned out. Find something fun or buddy up with a friend to increase your focus and success

8. Avoid Processed Foods  You should stay away from foods that contain MSG (monosodium glutamate), partially hydrogenated anything, genetically modified GMO, high fructose corn syrup, etc.  The more lean meats, fruits and raw vegetables you can eat – the better. A handful of almonds and is a great snack to satisfy cravings between meals.

9. Smoothies  A great “on the go” meal (especially for breakfast) is a smoothie shake.  There are tons of these on the market but beware of high carbs, fructose, and calories.  Premier Health and Wellness has created a new type of “Slender” Smoothie that is a detoxifying meal replacement shake. We use a hypo-allergenic pea protein (20g) for optimal metabolism. It is low calorie, low carb, and low sugar. If you replace 1-2 meals a day with a smoothie, you have reduced your calorie total tremendously heading into your evening meal!

10. Consider a Nutritionist Consultation Most of us have had little or no training on how to eat well. Invest some time in your health and get the proper information.

Can Chelation Therapy Help With Heavy Metal Detoxification? - Dr. Kristine Reese, ND – Naturopathic Doctor – Lotus Rain Naturopathic Clinic – IV Nutrition Therapy, Bio-identical Hormone Therapy, Chelation Therapy, Integrative Cancer Treatment, Anxiety, Allergies, Autoimmune Disorders, Detoxification, Naturopathic Medicine – San Diego, California

What is Chelation Therapy?

Chelation is the process of removing a heavy metal from the bloodstream to treat lead or mercury poisoning. Chelation can help improve cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction and Raynaud's Disease.

Heavy metal toxicity from chronic environmental exposure is often unrecognized because its symptoms are similar to many other health conditions: fatigue, nausea, insomnia, impaired mental function, nervousness, and even damage to vital organs. Although some heavy metals are part of a healthy diet (the trace elements iron, copper, manganese, and zinc), others (including arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminum) may become toxic when they accumulate in soft tissues after exposure through food, water, air, or absorption through the skin. Although arsenic and lead still lead the list of toxic heavy metals, potential mercury poisoning from fish such as tuna and swordfish, childhood immunizations, and dental fillings has caused increased concern. Chelating agents that bind to the heavy metals often are used to detoxify the body.

Derived from the Greek word for “claw,” chelation is the process of chemically binding metal ions and removing them from the tissue, to be filtered from the blood in the kidneys and eventually excreted in the urine. Chelating agents may be administered orally, intramuscularly, or intravenously.

Common chelating agents are:

• EDTA
• CaEDTA
• DMSA
• IV Vitamins

EDTA chelation removes metals and minerals from the blood, such as lead, iron, copper, and calcium, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat lead poisoning and toxicity from other heavy metals.

DMPS DMSA (dimercaptosuccinic acid) and EDTA (ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid) are chelators physicians utilize to remove heavy metals from patients suspected of heavy metal poisoning.

Licensed as a primary care physician in Oregon, Dr. Winkelman treats adults and children with any acute or chronic health problem, including but not limited tocancer, allergies, hormonal imbalances, depression, anxiety, arthritis, autism, and ADHD. In addition to naturopathic therapies, she also offers neurofeedback for adults and children when indicated.  Dr. Winkelman's comprehensive, systems-based approach focuses on creating a state of health and balance within the human organism. Her blend of medical and psychological expertise makes her approach to healing unique within Portland and the United States.

Dr. Winkelman believes that even more important than a diagnosis or treatment plan are the insights that you will have regarding how to best elicit your own environment of health and happiness: it is these insights which will keep you engaged in the healing process. With this in mind, she creates a calm and welcoming atmosphere in which these insights may be experienced and acted upon.

Although she will help alleviate your symptoms, Dr. Winkelman only uses symptom management as a temporary strategy. As a long-term strategy, and with the goal of helping you to heal yourself and gain lifetime health, she focuses unrelentingly on identifying and modifying the factors and imbalances which actually caused your symptoms. Due to her experience in counseling psychology, Dr. Winkelman takes your personality, lifestyle, and support network into consideration when customizing your treatment. In her work with children she allies with parents to provide a positive atmosphere of change for the entire family.

Dr. Winkelman develops a close partnership with her patients. Through compassion, inspiration, encouragement, and practical support she motivates you to reach not only your goals for your health but your goals for your life. Her patients enjoy her warmth, sense of humor, and her ability to see to the heart of any situation. If you are ready to become an active participant in restoring and maintaining the health and well-being you deserve, please call or email the office for an appointment.

Additional training and experience:

In addition to her experience with patients, Dr. Winkelman has taught healthcare professionals, including MDs, psychologists, educators, and counselors, both at Portland State University and in various national conference presentations, on the topics of maintaining joy and avoiding burnout in the human service professions and cultivating intuition and humanity in the practice of medicine. A published author, she is a past faculty member of the Psychology of Mind Training Institute and was mentored in psychology by the founder of Health Realization Psychology, George Pransky, Ph.D.

Dr. Winkelman is especially skilled in a specialized system of healing which utilizes basic lifestyle habits in conjunction with extremely effective therapies which help the body to heal itself. This system–which takes advantage of the best that homeopathy and botanical medicine have to offer–takes into account the complex physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual milieu of each patient to produce lasting balance and health. As a medical student, she was chosen for an extended mentoring relationship by the leading North American authority in this method: Dick Thom, DDS, ND, and has completed many hours of study, seminars, and clinical work within this system.

As a result of encountering infertility, Dr. Winkelman began her own personal health journey in 1998. She now has two beautiful children and shares a love of medicine and psychology with her husband. Drs. Gil and Christie live in Southwest Portland with their son, Eli, and daughter, Amelia, and enjoy supporting the health of the local and greater Portland community. Calm+

Anxiety or nervousness can manifest in many ways. It is often associated with other health problems, such as digestive distress, muscle tension, depression, headaches, insomnia, hormonal problems, weight gain, concentration issues, or pain.

Even more than other problems, anxiety affects quality of life, making it difficult to enjoy pleasurable activities, to stay calm and be present with family members, and to function optimally at work and make good decisions.  In addition, when a person experiences anxiety regularly, relationships are often affected, due to altered communication patterns. Long term, it creates stress in the body that can eventually lead to a downward health spiral.

At Insights to Health, we are pleased to offer the Calm+ program, which is appropriate to people who suffer from mild to severe anxiety. This program has grown out of many years of working with people to reduce their anxiety, improve their health, meet their personal goals, and enjoy life to the fullest.

We use our unique blend of counseling training and backgrounds, as well as our medical experience, to offer comprehensive treatment to heal the areas of your body and brain which are causing your particular  experience of anxiety, as well as other related health challenges. Instead of just treating the symptom of anxiety, your health and well-being is optimized.  In most cases, the use of pharmaceutical medications can be either avoided or gradually reduced and eventually eliminated.  Botanical treatments, nutritional recommendations, counseling, biotherapeutic drainage, neurofeedback, and biofeedback are all employed to bring you back to balance so that you can be at your best in all areas of your life!

Please call oremail for more information, or to request an appointment with an Insights to Health Clinic physician.

Dr. Warren M. Levin, MD Anti-Aging Medicine, Adult Diabetes, Heavy Metal Toxicity, Autism, Chelation Therapy, Thyroid Disorders, Cardiovascular Disorders, Bio-identical Hormone Therapies, Lyme Disease, Food & Environmental Allergies Doctor – Vienna, Virgina and New York, New York

Dr. Warren M. Levin is recognized as the “East Coast Dean of Alternative Medicine.” He has been a visionary in reporting the interconnections among many intractable syndromes with the Standard American Diet–which he calls SAD, the heavy metals in our environment, and other factors in the modern lifestyle and drug-oriented conventional medicine. For example, he has been

One of the first to document the connection of Candida (Yeast) infections with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Multiple Chemical Sensitivities and most recently with refractory Lyme disease

An early pioneer in treating Autism, Asperger’s, ADD/ADHD, and Learning Disabilities with avoidance of allergenic foods, environments, and toxins, as well as via correcting metabolic imbalances and infections.

The first to recognize and report Lyme-Induced Autism.

Among the first to offer IV Chelation Therapy for heart Disease.

One of the first to warn about the dangers of vaccine, especially Hep B for newborns, cervical cancer vaccine for young girls, and as a contributing factor to Mercury overload in infants

A pioneer in providing Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement for weight loss and anti-aging.

Dr. Levin has found that many patients have complex problems but can frequently be restored to health when treatment addresses the multiple causes rather than merely giving medication for the symptoms.

If you have come in search of optimal health and wellness with a physician who will take the time to listen to your physical and emotional challenges and will work with you to address them,  Dr. Levin recognizes that each patient is a totally unique individual. The development of each patient’s regimen recognizes this uniqueness.

Please see more about our philosophy and what to expect on your first appointment.

Warren M. Levin, MD, FAAFP (ret), FACN, FAAEM relocated to Vienna, Virginia from New York City and Wilton, Connecticut.

He is recognized as the “East Coast Dean of Alternative Medicine” —establishing the first alternative and integrative medical practice in New York City (1974).

He received his medical degree from the Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Dr. Levin has been Board Certified by the following institutions;
American Board of Family Physicians (ret), The American Board of Chelation Therapy, The American Board  of Clinical Metal Toxicology, The American Board of Environmental Medicine, The American Board of Advanced Longevity Medicine, American Board of Environmental Medicine and The American Board of Bariatric Medicine. He is a Fellow of The Academy of Family Practice [ret], a Fellow of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and a Fellow of The American College of Nutrition, Board of Directors of the NoVA Chapter of the NAA [National Autism Association] - Chairman of Biomedical Education.

Our Philosophy

The human body is a miraculousmachine that is designed to fix itself.  No doctor can “fix” it – even the most advanced surgery requires the miracle of healing after the wound is closed.”  What then is the doctor’s function?  It is to find the underlying problem(s) that prevent healing!  We must identify:

Deficiencies – Vitamins, minerals, essential fats and oils and essential carbohydrate molecules are processed out of the American diet.

Toxicities – Sudden or gradual accumulation of substances interfere with the body’s biochemistry.

Infections - Acute or chronic infections are frequent but can be very difficult to identify.

Allergies - Commonly unrecognized, allergies can cause debilitating symptoms.

Hormonal (Endocrine) Imbalance – A condition which plays a major role in perpetuating disability.

The latest mouthful is “Psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrinology” – an incredible balancing act that no human can successfully emulate with prescription drugs, all of which are, by definition, foreign to healthy biochemistry.

There are many times when prescription drugs are a haven in the SHORT TERM. Dr. Levin does not say patients should NEVER use drugs, nor that they should ALWAYS avoid American medicine, or stay out of Hospitals/ERs – those can all be life-saving, or in worst-case scenarios, they can provide blessed relief from incurable symptoms. But in our facility, our objective is to foster and support the miracle of healing – it is every patient’s birthright.

The Conditions We Treat are Inter-related

In 1985, Dr. Levin presented scientific research linking chronic systemic yeast withparasites, affecting diseases such as Allergies, Asthma and Chronic Fatigue/ Fibromyalgia. He found that many of these patients have complex problems but can frequently be restored to health when treatment addresses the multiple causes rather than merely giving medication for the symptoms.

Similarily with Asperger’s Syndrome, Autism, Learning Disabilities, andADD/ADHD– These conditions are often linked to nutritional deficiencies, various toxins and multiple infections and Dr. Levin is notable for treating patients with non-invasive procedures.

Diabetes is another clear example of the genes interacting with the environment, so that Diabetes can be modified by correcting diet, exercise, toxins, infections, etc.

Aging

Recent informational releases by the CDC (US Center for Disease Control) concur with Dr. Levin’s long time philosophy that “virtually all human diseases result from the interaction of genetic susceptibility factors and modifiable environmental factors, broadly defined to include infections, chemical, physical, nutritional and behavioral factors” (CDC, August, 2000) – and now we can identify the genetic susceptibility!

I am 89 years old and have just completed work on my 74th book. I am told that I am doing my best writing in these later years. Certainly my brain has never worked more clearly, or my inventive powers been so high. I am in good health and have none of the diseases or pains connected with old age. I take no drugs, but I do use a large number of carefully chosen nutritional supplements. I owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Warren Levin for rescuing me from a state of ill health that other doctors could do nothing about. – PAW, Faber, VA

Is easily angered or has frequent temper tantrums

There are safe options in coping with ADD-ADHD:

Visiting a physician who can evaluate the child’s whole body is the first place to start. The physician may find other underlying conditions that need addressing but ones that may be overlooked during a routine physical exam.

Diet is important to a child with ADD-ADHD. The physician will instruct you on proven dietary changes that can assist your child in coping with this illness.

Exercise is always important for children. The physician will speak with you about exercise during the treatment plan visit.

Modifying your child’s environment to minimize distractions and safety is necessary in addition to natural therapy. Pharmaceutical therapy may be necessary, but should never be the only focus of the treatment plan.

Dr. Levin is able to evaluate your child and put together an individualized treatment plan for your child.

Allergies/Asthma

Asthma is marked by the constriction of the airways that become inflamed and are lined with mucus. Allergies, stress, frigid air, common colds, and exertion can trigger asthma.

Typical signs of asthma are: wheezing, coughing, tightness in the chest area, and shortness of breath.

If you or a loved one has a symptom(s) of asthma, you will need to be seen by a medical doctor to identify irritants that may be causing the asthma attacks and present an individualized treatment plan.

Dr. Levin has successfully treated asthmatic patients and welcomes you to schedule an appointment.

Andropause

Andropause may affect men between the ages of 40-65 and is similar to menopause, except that it has no sudden onset. Testosterone levels drop gradually, where women’s estrogen drops rapidly at the onset of menopause.

The signs of andropause may include mood changes, decline in cognitive functions, fatigue, a loss of libido, changes in energy levels and physical agility, and depression.

Most of these symptoms can be treated successfully with diet changes, exercise, and natural supplements. It is recommended that males who are experiencing health problems or are concerned about andropause should be evaluated by a physician that focuses on the whole body rather than the blood levels of testosterone alone.

If you or a loved one is suffering from andropause, Dr. Levin is able to evaluate and put together an individualized treatment plan.

Asperger’s Syndrome (AS)

Asperger’s Syndrome is a neurobiological disorder and falls into the group known asautism spectrum disorders. Because it’s a multi-symptom illness, it may be difficult to diagnose and treat. However, it differs with Autism as the onset of AS is normally later than Autism  — or it may be that is just recognized later than Autism.

Children with Asperger’s Syndrome normally have poor social skills, limited facial expressions, odd speech patterns, obsessions, sensitivity to lights/sounds that a parent may not see or notice; and may be characterized as clumsy, self-centered,  and odd, with few interests and peculiar behaviors.

Getting help early and finding the right treatment plan is key in successfully living with AS.

Dr. Levin evaluates those suspected with Asperger’s Syndrome and will put together a treatment program individualized for your child.

The first time we met you (our son) knew you were going to help him. He called you “The Thinker.” After years of pain and weakness and many, many doctors, you were really the first to spend time and review his case. Candida

Candida is as real and as overlooked, as under treated and as misunderstood, and maligned as Lyme disease. We were taught in medical school that systemic Candida was a fatal complication of immune sup-pression, as with cancer, chemo-therapy, and eventually AIDS. Today Candida is so common-place that a serious error of logic has occurred-”If everybody has it, then it must be normal!” Yet, it is only one of a multitude of unhealthy contaminants of the intestinal tract that contributes to chronic illness.

Dr. Levin’s treatment of my allergies and chronic yeast infection has been the only treatment which has worked. -D DeJ  JJ

I was bounced around from specialist to specialist… Thanks to your patience, listening and vast experience and knowledge in so many areas of the medical field, it was determined exactly what was causing my medical issues. I was dying prematurely from the Lyme and Candida and heavy metals exposure. I am grateful for the diagnosis that you made and your treatment is enabling me to start the recovery process and improve the quality of my life for my remaining years. Thanks for going the extra mile to figure out my medical issues and correct them. Barry C., Research Technician

Cardiovascular Disease (CAD)

American medicine is great in emergencies, but that is too late for starting to treat the major cause of death in this country! Heart attacks and strokes are preventable when the environment is modified to correct for various genes!

Dr. Levin was the earliest practitioner of Chelation in New York, beginning in 1973.

After having completed a program of Chelation Therapy…and after, under Dr. Levin’s guidance, having effected some lifestyle changes, including diet, vitamin and mineral supplements and regular exercise, I am now free of symptoms. – MEE, Flushing, NY

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome appeared in the mid 1970’s and is labeled as an acquired immunodeficiency disorder. It is estimated that over five million people with CFS may be undiagnosed and therefore untreated. ₁

The exact cause is still unknown. Common symptoms include:

Intense fatigue that is not improved with rest

Flu-like symptoms

Fatigue that is worsened by physical or mental activity

Impaired memory or concentration

Problems with sleep

Muscle or joint pain (including the jaw); morning stiffness

Headaches

Sore throat or earaches

Abdominal or chest pain

Chronic cough or shortness of breath

Night sweats or bloating

Weight changes or nausea

Behavioral changes

There are natural therapies that may ease your symptoms. Please schedule an appointment with Dr. Levin to discuss your options if you or a loved one is suffering from CFS.

Diabetes

Diabetes is an illness caused by high levels of blood glucose that resulting from inappropriate insulin production and/or defective insulin action. People with diabetes are more susceptible to other illness and often have poor prognoses. Uncontrolled diabetes may often lead to biochemical imbalances that can prove life threatening. According to statistics, it is estimated that over 5 million people who have diabetes are undiagnosed. ₁

Type I (Juvenile Onset – insulin dependent)

Frequent urination & Extreme hunger

Weight loss

Type II (Adult Onset—non insulin dependent)

Any symptoms on Type I list & Blurred vision

Slow to heal from cuts & Tingling/numbness & Skin or gum problems

Just as with any illness, you deserve individualized care. Dr. Levin has successfully treated patients with both Type I and Type II diabetes. Call to make an appointment today.

…I had been an insulin dependent diabetic for thirteen years. ..and would need laser treatments within the following year. Dr. Levin put me on a program of supplements…suggested Chelation treatments, after taking great pains and time to tell me that he was not certain it would help, nor was he using EDTA for its recognized purpose…One year later my retinopathy had improved…six months later, it was completely gone. In addition, my kidney function has improved to a point within normal range, - FMS, NYC, NY

Fibromyalgia Syndrome

The main symptom of Fibromyalgia is sensitivity to pain. Because Fibromyalgia has overlapping symptoms of other illnesses, it is described as a syndrome rather than a disease. Fibromyalgia is often difficult to diagnose as it mimics other conditions and illnesses.

Common symptoms of Fibromyalgia:

Dizziness

Nausea

Morning stiffness

Sleep disorders

Anxiety

Brain fog

Fatigue

Cognitive problems

Breathing difficulties

Vision problems

Headaches

Flu-like symptoms

Muscle twitches

Weight  gain

Weakness

Dysmenorrhea

Memory loss

Although there is no one test to diagnose Fibromyalgia, it is important to get relief from your symptoms. Dr. Levin has been successfully been treating those with Fibromyalgia with safe and natural products. Get your individualized treatment protocol from a physician with experience. Heavy Metal Toxicities

In 1990, Dr. Levin was the first East Coast physician to enter an IRB study for mercury toxicity treatment. Metal poisoning is now slow, chronic, ubiquitous and frequently misdiagnosed.

…you helped me with some chronic digestive problems and fatigue. You were so successful that I didn’t need to see you for some seven years when I contracted severe mercury poisoning that you diagnosed only after eight more traditional physicians and specialists had failed. You literally saved my life in diagnosing and helping me remove the mercury. – JP, Nyack, NY

Intestinal Dysbiosis

Tonight the hospital lab called to tell us that (our son) had c.diff from a stool test and they wanted to make sure that his physicians knew because they were concerned about his getting treated as soon as possible. I knew that I needed to call Dr. Levin because you are the one I trust with my kids more than anyone. I appreciate him picking up the phone after hours and listening to my concerns. As a mom, it is comforting to know that he is only a phone call away to help. – GF

Lyme Disease

Dr. Levin has been treating Lyme disease since the mid-1990s. Dr. Levin himself has had Lyme disease twice but successfully treated it early on both occasions. This makes three important points:

Early treatment is short and effective.

Unlike most other infections, long-term immunity is not guaranteed after recovery or immunization.

It is impossible (outside of a very few research facilities) to differentiate a new infection from a recurrence of an old one that has not been treated long enough. Knowing when to stop is often more difficult than making the diagnosis. Late diagnosis and short treatment is the formula for disastrous results.

Dr. Levin through time, patience , various testing, and tons of blood work, vitamins, some minerals, and medications has healed me both physically and mentally. He has corrected the deficiencies and balanced my system. I can honestly state that Dr. Warren Levin is the very best of the best. He truly cares about his patients and he goes the “whole nine yards” for them. Thank you Dr. Levin for giving me back my life. – SSL

My name is K. Jacobs. Over the last six years I have suffered from Lyme disease which has caused me memory loss, super-ventricular tachycardia, joint pain, swollen glands, and has weakened me. I have not been able to return to work. It short, Lyme Disease has simply robbed me of my life.

In my ongoing struggle with this disease is where I found comfort and hope, when I met Dr. Warren Levin.  Dr. Levin is known as one of the foremost experts in the treatment of Lyme Disease as well as a Pioneer in the Field of Integrative and Alternative Medicine. He is thorough and detail oriented and does not leave a stone unturned in his search for answers for his patients.  However, to me he is so much more than that-he is a compassionate man who treats his patients as human beings rather than just medical cases.

I have spent many hours having treatment in his office, in New York watching him dance around, sitting next to his patients and bringing them hope like a medical life jacket. He brings each person safely home with kind words and lots of love. How often do you find such a doctor? – K J, NYC, NY

General Practice – Migraines

At thirty-six years old, migraines robbed me of significant life function.  After two years of disability and many different experimental medications and treatments, I felt like my neurologist had given up on me.  I was considering an inpatient program at a headache clinic far from home.  Another specialist kept encouraging me to keep trying, and so I did more research online as I could.  It was increasingly hard to concentrate and remember things.  Other medical problems started to surface due to my incapacitation and inactivity.

I sought out Dr. Warren M. Levin for his expertise in Lyme’s Disease.  I read about neurotoxins as a complication of Lyme and that they could potentially cause migraines.  Upon leaving my first office visit, he had targeted my problem not as Lyme, but as a neurotransmitter disease and prescribed amino acid therapy from CHK Nutrition.  He educated me and my husband in plain language and gave us confidence in the treatment.

Three days after starting the amino acids, I started to be functional again.  I spent my first weekend without pain in years, and I was amazed at how joyful life could be.  My daughter got her Mommy back and my husband got a new wife.  Now, four months later, I am stronger and weaned off of my neurologist’s prescribed medications with no return of pain.  My outlook on life has changed, and I will forever be grateful to Dr. Levin for his expertise. – AZ

What a privilege it was to visit your holistic medicine practice.  It is refreshing to see a physician devoting so much time to patients, + individually tailoring their care.  When I decided to visit, I knew only that you had transformed the life of a patient of mine who had intractable migraines. I was unaware of the years of harassment and litigation you had endured defending your right to practice medicine—to do what you thought was best for the patient, even if it deviated from the conventional approach.  If physicians strictly adhered to the standard of care, all medical progress would cease. Thank you for upholding a higher standard. We are all beneficiaries of your courage and perseverance. – WC, MD

We Treat the Whole Patient

Our services and treatments are a blending of conventional and alternative philosophies for health.  Dr. Levin incorporates a vast array of scientific knowledge gathered from over 50 years of practice and from innumerable resources.  The office uses the most reliable laboratories and the highest grade therapies in order to provide the most effective treatments available.  This practice is focused on patients with chronic illnesses – “The Stepchild of American Medicine.”

Dr. Levin is committed to providing his patients innovative medical services and therapies that may not be readily available elsewhere and to providing each patient with information about his/her health and available treatments in order for each patient to make an informed choice.

Alternative medicine has been around for centuries and recognizes that the patient presents at the physician’s office as the sum total of all the patient has ever been, thought experienced, desired, consumed, or any activity she/he has ever engaged in. Dr. Levin realizes this, as well, so, instead of a “pill for your ill” (or symptom), Dr. Levin strives to bring your whole being into focus. The only way to accomplish this is for a doctor to spend more time with each new patient than insurance companies are willing to pay for.  This accounts for the lengthy initial office visits, to allow a thorough review of previous records and an in depth current history with review of questionnaires; a long second consultation to review new laboratory tests and make a working diagnosis, followed by a discussion of the various options for treatment.

The natural approach to healing has a long history. Before there were pills, there were herbs. Dr. Levin recognizes the incredible advances in medical science, but insists on non-evasive and more body-friendly approaches whenever possible.

We had been to other doctors to try to explain that we believed in a natural method to recover from Autism. They did not understand what we wanted and we had to explain it to them. You did the proper testing to find out exactly what individual needs Robbie had and explained in great detail how and why these things needed to be done. – T&C W, Chantilly, VA

Healing is not just the alleviation of symptoms, but getting at the underlying causes for the symptoms. You may share symptoms with another person, but this does not mean you have the same underlying conditions causing the same symptoms. And since you are an individual, your therapy must be carefully planned to meet your underlying conditions and symptoms.

Advanced Longevity Therapy

Dr. Levin emphasizes the quality of life in the elderly. This therapy takes into account your entire health picture–genetic, infection, chemical, physical, nutritional, and behavioral factors. This means Dr. Levin emphasizes prevention of disease, detoxification, and lifestyle changes to optimize and extend quality years of life. This may include hormone replacement, supplement therapy, etc.

Chelation (key-la-shun)

Chelation therapy utilizes several different substances to help the body eliminate unwanted (usually toxic) minerals, including Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic, and Aluminum. Note, in some cases, useful minerals are lost too, so careful pre-testing and post treatment follow up is required. One of the first substances was the administration of a man-made amino acid called EDTA into the veins — EDTA is an abbreviation for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. Properly used, EDTA is the BEST form of Preventative Medicine for degenerative cardiovascular diseases, because it also removes Calcium, and essential mineral that tends to accumulate with age and contributes then to arteriosclerotic changes in the heart, brain, and peripheral circulation. Dr. Levin gave his first Chelation treatment in 1968 to a woman who was dying from congestive heart failure (from rheumatic heart disease and hypertension), with insulin dependent diabetes, gout and kidney failure. She “came back” and lived at a whole new level of energy for over 15 months. That began his career as one of the leaders of this “controversial” therapy that has helped thousands of patients to “Bypass the Bypass Surgery.”

Intramuscular and Intravenous Therapy

This type of therapy offers a direct route to the cells in your body, bypassing the intestinal absorption that takes place with pills, capsules, or other oral medications. All orally ingested substances are filtered through the liver before reaching body tissues and organs. A great deal of the dosage is lost by that “first pass” while injected products are circulated throughout the entire body after injection, as a much higher concentration in the blood than is possible after oral use of the same product.  It is done in the office and monitored by well trained staff. Dr. Levin’s office caters to those who are needle-shy.

Natural Hormone Therapy

With more than 40 years of experience supporting Hormone Replacement Therapy coupled with his recent research in the use of Human Growth Hormone and the new Genomics™ testing, Dr. Levin keeps his practice on the cutting edge of Advanced Longevity Medicine. He has been using Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) since the mid-1990s. He utilizes thyroid and adrenal balancing as well.

This type of therapy addresses the adrenals and thyroid conditions, as well as menopause and andropause, representing the loss of youthful levels of Estrogen and Progesterones (female) and Testosterones (male).

The therapy includes bio-identical hormones (identical to those that healthy human organs make), and plant-based therapies (which have been around for centuries) to treat and reverse bone loss, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms, fatigue, reduction of risk to breast cancer, etc.

Neurotransmitter Precursors for Migraines, Depression, Weight Loss

Using neurotransmitter precursors for depression, migraines and obesity Why do most drugs for depression work well at first and then fail? The answer is in the name of these drugs. Serotonin “uptake inhibitors” inhibit your body from re-absorbing important neurotransmitters each time your nerves use them to send messages. So your reservoir of these neurotransmitters gets delpeted. You can’t take neurotransmitters orally or by injection, because they don’t cross the blood brain barrier. An alternative therapy prescribes the building blocks or “precursor” molecules, so that the body will manufacture neurotransmitters naturally and refill the reservoirs. An interview of Dr. Levin in Public Health Alert by Tina Garcia. (pdf)

Nutrition and Supplements

Only the highest quality supplements are recommended in this practice. Often, supplements make it unnecessary for dangerous pharmaceuticals. This therapy is safe when directions are carefully followed. Did you know that there were over 100,000 deaths [http://www.releasingfat.com/newsletter/upload/45.pdf] in one year from properly administered drugs given to patients in hospitals by qualified personnel, for the appropriate indications?

Despite the constant warnings from Medicine’s “Ivory Towers” and various governmental sources of the dangers of nutritional supplements, there was not a single death due to vitamins or minerals reported from the nation’s network of Poison Control Centers in 2009!

Vitamin Therapy

Vitamin C IV therapy and other high grade vitamins are available in this practice. Vitamin C IV therapy has shown to be beneficial to those suffering from chronic fatigue and other conditions. This is the best form of administering Vitamin C if you have an underlying condition that may prevent absorption (i.e. diarrhea).  The IV therapy allows for the much needed vitamin to gain immediate access to your body so that it can help you to heal.

Weight Control

Obesity can be caused by many things, not just overeating. Some other causes may be slow metabolism, eating the wrong kinds of food, insulin resistance, inflammation, Leptin resistance, hormone imbalances, stress, and more. In order to lose weight, the underlying conditions must be detected and corrected. One of the most overlooked factors for the ultimate success of any weight loss program is the removal of the toxins that are released from their storage in body fat when fat is consumed during weight loss. There are many indications that some patients put on fat to keep toxins from getting into essential body organs. Dr. Levin offers nutritional supplementation therapies for weight control, including the all natural weight loss protocols utilizing HCG – a pituitary hormone protocol, based on the work of Dr. A.T.W. Simeons, as modified by Dr. Peter Lindner and Dr. Levin over a period of many years. Dr. Levin’s contribution was the method detection and modification of the protocol because of Hypoglycemia. As a former VP of The American Society of Bariatric Physicians, Dr. Levin has used this therapy safely and effectively for over 30 years with dramatic results. This program includes weekly visits with a staff member and a Nutrient IV. Dr. Levin also taught Dr. Robert Atkins the importance of Adrenal support for Hypoglycemia during the Atkins Diet, which had been specifically negated in his first book, and subsequently added to his protocol.

You Can Cure Irritable Bowel Syndrome Naturally- Dr. Ionela O. Hubbard – Functional Medicine, Acupuncture, Integrative Cancer Treatment, Preventive Health, Anti-Aging, Holistic Healing, Nutritional Healing Doctor -

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

60 million Americans (20% of our population) suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), a condition so severe that often prevents them from leaving their home even for short trips. Often, these patients are told this condition is “psychosomatic”, which in plain language means “it’s all in their head”.  They may be prescribed antidepressants, sedatives, anti-spasmodic drugs, told to take more fiber, and left to suffer for years. Some of my patients have suffered from these symptoms for decades. However, this illness is very real with its incapacitating symptoms of bloating, cramps, diarrhea, constipation, and pain. All the prescription meds given for IBS do not improve patients’ condition because they disregard the underlying causes of this syndrome. I have been successfully treating IBS and other digestive conditions by using a science-based, functional medicine approach.

Our Digestive System
Our intestine is designed to digest and absorb nutrientsIts inner lining has the surface of a doubles tennis court and the thickness of one single layer of microscopic cells. Up to 70% of our immune system is located in the intestinal wall, creating a sophisticated gut-immune system. Together with the single layer of cells, the gut immune system creates a protective barrier against bacteria, viruses, undigested foods, and many other particles present in our gut.

Stress, a low-fiber, high-sugar diet, alcohol, too many antibiotics or anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e., ibuprofen, aspirin or Advil, steroids), intestinal infections, and more – damage this intestinal defense barrier.  Exposure to foreign particles from food and bacteria and other microbes can trigger and perpetuate the gut immune response, potentially causing allergy, irritating our intestine, leading to what we call irritable bowel syndrome. This immune activation may extend beyond the intestinal environment, causing system wide problems such as allergyarthritisautoimmunitymood disorders, and even ADHD do to the disruption of the enteric nervous system (the second brain).

Unbalanced Intestinal Bacteria
It is important to maintain a healthy intestinal bacterial flora (microflora), which prevents opportunistic bacteria from thriving and participates in the regulation of the gut-immune system.  When your gut bacteria are out of balance, either by having too many pathogenic bacteria or not enough healthy bacteria, you can become sick.  You have approximately 3 pounds of bacteria, roughly 500 species in your gut. In fact, there is more bacterial DNA in your body than there is human DNA. Among all that gut bacteria, there are good and bad bacteria.

If you have predominantly bad bacteria or if they move into the small intestine, which is normally sterile, they can start fermenting the food you digest, particularly sugar or starchy foods. Bacterial flora thrives in this environment, causing small bowel bacterial overgrowth (1), which is a major cause of IBS. Patients suffering with IBS complain of bloating, feeling of fullness after meals, or increase amounts of gas (flatulence). These symptoms are caused by the thriving intestinal bacteria enjoying their lunch. SBBO can be easily diagnosed by either a breath test of a urine test. The breath test measures the gas produced by the bacteria, while the urine test measures the byproducts of the bacteria, which have been absorbed into your system.

IBS and SBBO are real syndromes. A recent review article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) (1) described the causes and mechanisms responsible for the development of these syndromes. Another articled published in the peer reviewed journal Annals of Internal Medicine presents effective treatment options for clearing out the overgrowth of bacteria (SBBO), thus dramatically improving the IBS symptoms in only 10 days. (2)

Fungal Infections
Often, I find patients with significant yeast overgrowth, especially when their beneficial bacteria are depleted. It is important to remove the yeast and replenish as many species of the good bacteria as possible using specific prebiotics and probiotics.

Food Allergies
While this is great news for many IBS patients, there are some that have more than one cause for their IBS symptoms. These patients have several food sensitivities, which are not true allergies, but low-grade reactions to foods, causing many chronic symptoms including IBS. These symptoms occur 2 hours up to 72 hours after exposure to the offending food, making it difficult to identify the specific trigger.

A breakthrough paper, was recently published in the prestigious British medical journal Gut that found eliminating foods identified through delayed food allergy testing (IgG antibodies) resulted in dramatic improvements in IBS symptoms.(3) Another article, an editorial in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, stated clearly that we must respect and recognize the role of food allergies and inflammation in IBS.(4)

Other causes
Other causes of IBS may be insufficient digestive enzymes, presence of parasites living in the gut, deficiency of nutrients such as zincmagnesium or fiber, even heavy metal toxicity, and more. If IBS stays untreated for long time, patients may develop a local (gut) inflammatory response, which in time may become systemic.

And this is precisely why it is so critically important to receive a personalized treatment based on your unique circumstances. It is essential to identify your underlying causes and treat them. The key is to effectively treat the cause. The science is clear, and we have the tools to treat this chronic problem which affects 1 in 5 people. There is no need to wait for any more research. Every week, patients tell me how much better they’ve been feeling since their IBS symptoms are gone.

Healing Irritable Bowel Syndrome
I recommend that you follow this 5 step by step protocol:

  1. Get tested for food allergies (IgE) and sensitivities (IgG)
  2. Eliminate all positive foods (according to your blood test results) for 3 months. If testing is not an option, try an elimination diet for 2-4 weeks. We can provide you an easy to follow comprehensive elimination diet.
  3. Balance your intestinal bacteria – get rid of the bad bacteria and/or yeast and reintroduce the beneficial bacteria.
  4. Improve digestion – use digestive enzymes with every meal to properly break down your food and prevent new food sensitivities. We can recommend specific products for your particular condition.
  5. Reduce intestinal inflammation – some patients may need specific nutrients that help heal the intestinal lining.

By seeking out your underlying causes of IBS and following the above recommendations, you can dramatically improve your health and overcome your digestive problems.

George Mandler, LDN, LicAC - Acupuncturist – Nutrition,Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Digestive Disorders, Food Sensitivities, Infertility, Pain Management, Fatigue, Allergies – Stow, Massachusetts

About George Mandler, LicAC, LDN - I began studying nutrition and Eastern healing arts over 20 years ago because of my own health issues.  My personal health experience coupled with formal education as well as continually studying the work of  brilliant practitioners and researchers reflects in the positive results my patients experience.   I am dedicated to my work and helping people that are ready to take ownership of their health.

My acupuncture treatments are mostly  the Japanese style of my primary teacher, internationally known Sensei Kiiko Matsumoto, whom I studied with for several years.  I also utilize a style taught through disciples of  a Taiwanese acupuncturist known as Master Tung Ching-Chang (1916-1975).   I am humbled at the depth and breadth of these Masters' expertise and generosity as well as their disciples' generosity.

My personal and clinical experience tells me that diet is one of the most important aspects of health.   If the diet is inappropriate for an individual then the acupuncture may not be as effective.   Therefore I also practice Integrative Functional Nutrition for which I have extensive training.    Included with nutrition are excellent quality herbal medicines and supplementation which I use when appropriate for patients.

I am a Licensed Acupuncturist and Licensed Dietitian specializing in digestive disorders and food sensitivities which can cause symptoms such as Migraines, Fibromyalgia, Fatigue, Immune challenges, Autoimmune, and Arthritis.

I also successfully treat a wide range of conditions such as Adrenal Fatigue, Blood Sugar Issues, Thyroid Imbalances, Infertility, Musculoskeletal, and Postpartum health.

I am  a faculty member at the New England School of Acupuncture where I teach western nutrition, Chinese nutrition, and a  continuing education class on "Nutrition for Acupuncturists".   My office is in Stow, MA at Integrative Wellness where I practice along with my wife Joy Mandlerand Dr Linda Reynolds.   We have a sweet clinic with private rooms and a community treatment room.  Please come in for a visit.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

All traditional cultures have used some form of herbal medicine to treat illness and maintain health. The medicine we need to heal ourselves often grows all around us. For instance, aspirin was created from research on white willow bark, a substance that has traditionally been used as a form of herbal medicine in some Native American cultures.

Modern medicine is now studying many of the Chinese herbs that have been used for thousands of years. In fact, Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) even predates acupuncture, having been firmly established by 200BC (at the latest).

By the first century AD, much documentation of medicinal herbs and formulas already existed, and many of these are still in use today. Since its inception, Chinese Herbal Medicine has established how to differentiate between various dis-eased states and how to match the right prescription to the particular dis-ease. The thousands of years of accumulated knowledge help to make CHM a powerful healing modality.

Herbs can be either raw, powdered concentrate, or patent. All herbs follow strict manufacturing standards and many of the herbs are certified organic.

The raw form is one that you cook yourself. If you love to cook and love the smell of herbs, then this is an excellent choice, especially as it is often the best method of treatment. All raw herbs used by George are either certified organic or guaranteed to have been grown without pesticides or herbicides.

Powdered formulas are concentrated herbal extracts that are much easier to use than raw herb. In fact, one only needs to mix them in hot or warm water. They are also guaranteed to be grown without harmful chemicals and are imported from Taiwan.

Patent formulas are pre-made herbal blends much like an over the counter vitamin supplement. They are prescribed in cases where a patient's condition exactly matches the indications of the formula, or when convenience or cost is the most important factor. These formulas either come from Japan or the United states and follow strict manufacturing standards.

Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a proven medical modality for treating a variety of ailments. It is a one part of the comprehensive system of Chinese Medicine used for at least 2000 years. Acupuncture is used to treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being by inserting needles in a specific combination at select points throughout the body. Due to its proven effectiveness, it has become popular throughout the world.

What are the needles like?
George Mandler uses only FDA approved sterile, hair thin disposable needles. They are only used once. These needles are carefully manufactured under the guidance of FDA and carries no risk of infection. Some people are afraid of needles because of their experience with hypodermic needles which are designed to tear through skin and blood vessels. Acupuncture needles are designed to painlessly penetrate the skin at a shallow depth. In fact a dozen acupuncture needles can fit in the opening of one hypodermic needle.

Does acupuncture hurt?
A common reaction with first time patients is "…you already put a needle in?". Most of the time you hardly feel them inserted into the skin.
Once an acupuncture needle is inserted you may feel a sensation of warmth, heaviness or energy moving through the body. The vast majority of people, even those who were afraid of acupuncture, find the experience very relaxing and rejuvenating.

What conditions does George treat using acupuncture?
The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture effective for a variety of ailments some of which include:
General: Allergies, Asthma, Sinusitis, Headaches, TMJ, Back Pain, Sciatica, Musculoskeletal Problems, Insomnia, Anxiety, Dizziness, Depression, High Blood Pressure, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Addictions, Indigestion, Constipation, Sexual Dysfunction, Post-Operative Recovery, Palliative Care.
Women's Health: Menstrual Irregularities, Menopause, Conception Difficulties, Pregnancy, Childbirth, Lactation Difficulties, Postpartum, Ovarian and Uterine Problems.
Men's Health: Prostate, Infertility, Impotence.
Preventative Health: Prevention, Stress Management, Wellness, Seasonal Attunement.

George has special interest and excellent results with the following conditions:

  • Digestive issues such as IBS, colitis, gas, bloating
  • Fatigue including CFS
  • Maternal Health especially during pregnancy and post-partum care
  • Pain management especially of the lower back, neck and shoulders

How does acupuncture work?
In Chinese medicine, the points lie along pathways called "meridians." The acupuncture needles help balance energy flow throughout the body. Modern research is currently attempting to uncover the physiology of these meridians, and one theory suggests that they lie along the fascial planes of the body. The fascia is a three dimensional matrix of tissue that covers our entire body, and recent research has shown that it contains intricate inter-cellular signaling.Over 80% of all major acupuncture points lie within fascial boundaries between muscles and bones, and certain meridian systems directly correspond with fascial planes.
Acupuncture adjusts and stimulates your healing energy to improve the health of your inner (organ function) or outer (musculoskeletal) body. Acupuncture performed correctly helps bring the body back into homeostasis, or balance. Acupuncture is adaptogenic, meaning that it helps the body adapt to different stresses and to generally normalize its functions. For the majority of people, the treatment is so relaxing that at some point they'll fall asleep.

What conditions can you treat with acupuncture?
Most common health conditions can be effectively treated with acupuncture. George has special interest in digestive disorders, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and perinatal care.

What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothing. You can wear baggy pants or sweats on the bottom and a comfortable shirt on top. George needs to be able to have access to your abdomen and arms below the elbow and legs below the knee. If you are coming from work you can bring a change of clothes.

How many sessions do I need and how often should I get treated?
Each person is different in terms of frequency and duration of treatment. For acute conditions you may come in three times per week for 2 weeks. For a chronic condition you may come in more often, say two times per week for a few weeks, then down to once every other week. It really depends on your condition and you can discuss your concerns with George.

How long does a session last?
Each session is usually about 1 – 1.5 hours. It depends on the condition and the patient's time constraints as some patients desire shorter or longer sessions.
Your initial comprehensive session will last at least 1 hour 30 minutes.

How much does acupuncture cost?
The normal fee for acupuncture is $25-$75 per session depending on how many times per week you need to be treated. The initial session is an additional $20 for the comprehensive intake.
Since George is a licensed dietitian, acupuncture sessions almost always include a discussion about diet and supplements which is a cornerstone to good health. Each session is much more than just inserting needles as diet, lifestyle, supplements and herbal remedies are often discussed.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
George is a preferred provider for all Massachusetts plans that contract with acupuncturists as preferred providers. Currently those plans are: Aetna, Cigna, United, Fidelity HPHC HMO. If you have insurance coverage with one of these plans they are billed directly and you are responsible for copay.

For other insurance plans that cover acupuncture (e.g. BC/BS Federal) and out of state plans (e.g. BC/BS California, Florida) George will provide you with a Superbill that you can submit for reimbursement. Please check your individual plan for your acupuncture benefits as coverage can vary within the same insurance carrier. State plans such as Commonwealth Care plans offer you a rebate for out of pocket acupuncture expenses.

"I didn’t even tell George anything was wrong. Yet he knew my symptoms just by checking my tongue and pulse. I was sold. Since starting treatment for fatigue, my energy has been steadily increasing and I’m functioning at a steadily higher level. As a single mom, this is vitally important.”

Integrative Nutrition

George combines modern Functional Medicine with ancient Chinese Medicine to uncover underlying physiologic nutritional imbalances. Just about anyone can benefit from a nutritional evaluation as the food we eat can be the cure or the cause for our ills.

At your first meeting you will be given dietary recommendations and possibly herbal, supplement or other lifestyle recommendations that will improve your health. All recommendations are individualized and unique to each person. Subsequent visits vary from every other week to every 2+ months, as each person is given different treatment plans.

At your first nutrition appointment please bring with you: (The forms below are downloaded from my clinic's website www.iwellnesscenter.com)

  1. 7 Day Diet Activity
  2. Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire
  3. Health History Questionnaire
  4. Any testing that you have had done in the past 2 years. (blood, urine, stool, saliva, skin prick testing etc). You can request copies from your PCP.
  5. All supplements you are currently taking.

At your nutrition appointment George will utilizes your diet history, a nutritional assessment form, lab testing, Chinese Medicine diagnosis, and plenty of discussion to best assess your health. This combination helps uncover physiological imbalances and assists in painting a clearer picture of what nutritional approaches would serve you best. One type of nutrition does not fit everyone. We are all individuals. Some folks do great as a vegetarian; some folks need to eat meat; for many a Mediterranean type diet will serve them well. In addition, different phases of life require a different diet, such as pregnancy and breast feeding.

You will be given dietary and lifestyle modifications specific for your body at this particular time. If necessary further blood, urine or saliva testing will be used to uncover biochemical imbalances in your body.

George is a Preferred Provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield

George has a deep understanding of an issue that has become increasingly confusing to the layperson:
• What should I eat?
• What foods should I avoid?
• Are the foods I'm eating causing my symptoms?
• Are the supplements I'm taking worth my money?
• What supplements should I take and in what dosages?
• How long should I take these supplements?

This nutritional knowledge is enormously helpful, but the addition of his Chinese Medicine knowledge makes it far more effective. Because Chinese medicine and diagnosis addresses the root of the problem, he is able to help you is able to start feeling better quickly.

“George possesses profound practical knowledge about the body’s complex systems as well as a deep intuitive wisdom that enables him to identify the root of a person’s imbalance.”
-Amy H, Personal Chef and Triathlete, Newton, MA

This ability to diagnose properly, combined with skill in acupuncture and Chinese herbs, and a vast and current knowledge of nutrition, create a dynamic healing combination.

You’ll find that what you need to eat and what supplements you need to take aren’t the same as what someone else needs to eat and take. No wonder you’re so confused!

George will also determine whether or not any combination of Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and/or shiatsu will be effective for your situation.

With our help, your health problems will abate and eventually be healed.

Naturopathic Medicine and The Evolving Paradigm Shift Towards Holistic Health Care - By Dr. Stacey Kupperman, ND – Naturopathic Doctor – Specializing In: Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement, Thyroid Disorders, Auto-Immune Disorders, Allergies, HCG Weight Loss, Allergies, Digestive Disorders, Detoxification, IV Nutrition, Chronic Fatigue, Homeopathic Medicine, Botanical Medicine – Santa Monica, Hollywood, Venice, Los Angeles, California

If a paradigm shift. Our understanding of health and medicine is broadening, and both practitioners and patients are embracing a holistic, integrated approach. Patients are becoming more informed via the internet, word of mouth, and diligent research that there is something significantly missing from medicine in the current standard of care in the American healthcare system. What they are finding, and flocking to, is a group of physicians that have likewise embraced this broadened approach to medicine. Some of these practitioners adopted a more holistic approach after realizing that there was something missing from their medical training, and sought out post-graduate trainings to complement their understanding of holistic medicine. Other practitioners discovered their passion before entering medical school, and pursued the study of naturopathic medicine.

So this begets the questions, What is Naturopathic Medicine, and where does Naturopathic Medicine fit in the paradigm shift?

What is Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic doctors (ND) are specialists in integrative medicine, combining extensive education and training in both natural and conventional medicine, emphasizing the use of the safest, least invasive methods to treat disease by restoring health. The education entails a 4-year graduate level program, national board examinations in basic and clinical sciences, and curriculum including basic sciences, clinical sciences, diagnostic techniques and tests, pharmacology, minor surgery, and range of naturopathic therapies including botanical medicine, nutrition and nutritional biochemistry, physical medicine, homeopathy, eastern and Chinese medicine and mind/body medicine.

Integral to naturopathic medicine is a unifying philosophical approach to health summed up in The Principals of Naturopathic Medicine, which recognizes the body’s innate wisdom and healing capacity (Vis Medicatrix Naturae) and the physician’s role to treat disease by restoring the body to its natural and balanced state (Tolle Causum). Treatment programs integrate multiple modalities, which may include nutrition and lifestyle modification, homeopathy, botanical medicine, nutraceuticals, IV nutrient therapy, and when warranted, pharmaceutical intervention. Naturopathic Doctors begin with the least invasive therapies and proceed to higher levels of intervention only as necessary. This approach is outlined in what is called “The Therapeutic Order”

The Principles Of Naturopathic Medicine:

1. First Do No Harm, Primum Non Nocere – this principle is at the basis of any medical professional. Naturopathic physicians follow a therapeutic order which emphasizes the use of least force necessary to restore health, using the least toxic and minimally invasive interventions and only proceeding to more toxic and invasive interventions when necessary

2. The Healing Power of Nature, Vis Medicatrix Naturae – First described by Hippocrates as the healing power of nature. It is a person’s vital force within that allows an individual to overcome disease. Naturopathic Medicine recognizes an inherent ordered and intelligent self-healing process in each person. Naturopathic physicians act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this inherent self-healing process.

3. Identify and Treat the Cause, Tolle Causam – The Naturopathic physician seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms the patient is experiencing.

4. Doctor As Teacher, Docere – Naturopathic physicians educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor/patient relationship.

5. Treat the Whole Person – Naturopathic physicians treat each patient by taking into account an individual’s physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, spiritual, and other factors that contribute to one’s health.

6. Prevention – Naturopathic physicians emphasize the prevention of disease-assessing factors, heredity, and susceptibility to disease, and work towards making the appropriate decisions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.

Naturopathic Therapeutic Order

1. Establish the conditions for health – Identify and remove disturbing factors – Institute a more healthful regimen

2. Stimulate the healing power of nature (vis medicatrix naturae): the self-healing processes, through low force methods such as constitutional hydrotherapy, homeopathy, acupuncture

3. Address weakened or damaged systems or organs (via botanical medicine, homeopathy, orthomolecular nutrients, glandulars, homeopathy, and other minimally invasive, safe, natural therapies)

  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Decrease toxicity
  • Normalize inflammatory function
  • Optimize metabolic function
  • Balance regulatory systems
  • Enhance regeneration
  • Harmonize life force

4. Correct structural integrity

5. Address pathology:

a. use specific natural substances, modalities, or interventions

b. use specific pharmacologic or synthetic substances

6. Suppress or surgically remove pathology

Why Naturopathy?

As Gandhi said, we must “be the change you wish to see in the world.” Naturopathic Doctors practice the change they want to see in medicine. Despite the fact that it has not gained universal acceptance within the United States healthcare system, Naturopathic Doctors have taken a ‘leap of faith’, knowing that integrative medicine is the best medicine and will eventually gain not only parity, but prominence. Naturopathy extends beyond just integrating multiple therapies and modalities in treatment. It incorporates an integrative approach to all aspects of health and wellness. Starting from day one of a naturopath’s medical education and continuing throughout practice, every body system, function, disease, and treatment is viewed from a holistic perspective. It is very likely that almost every integrative medical practitioner shares at least some philosophical tenants with naturopathy, regardless of whether it is called “naturopathic” or “holistic” or “alternative”. It is also likely that many integrative practitioners differ on some philosophies, treatments and approaches. Having an underlying shared philosophical approach combined with different styles, opinions, ideas and discoveries fuel evolution, progress and change. As such, the philosophy and practice of Naturopathic Medicine is a part of the evolving consciousness and paradigm shift towards a more holistic and integrative approach to healthcare that will soon become the new standard for conventional medicine.
