Founded by Dr. Stacey Kupperman, N.D,HealthyByNature is a medical center located in Los Angeles.  Our mission is to provide our patients with a safe, effective, and more natural approach to healthcare by incorporating multiple valid, scientifically and clinically based medical therapies to promote optimal wellness and restoration of health.  Our comprehensive approach blends the best of all medical disciplines, including conventional scientific medicine along with holistic and natural medical therapies.  Diagnosis and treatment plans are personalized to each patient’s particular needs and goals, empowering them to achieve optimal health and wellness for life.

In today’s stressful and polluted world, more and more people are experiencing chronic diseases on all level of their being – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.  The current model of mainstream medicine, which relies on a protocol of disease diagnosis and pharmaceutical treatment, very often does not solve the underlying cause(s) of this panacea of illnesses and dis-ease.  Very often, having conventional treatment only serves to modify the symptoms, but really does not address the underlying mechanisms promoting the disease state.

At HealthyByNature, our goal is to get to the root cause or causes that prevent oneself from experiencing optimal health. Using an analogy of a wound, while some medical approaches provide a band aid to cover the cut and prevent bleeding, our approach seeks to support the body to quickly, effectively heal the cut so that the band aid is no longer necessary.

As the latin root of the word “Doctor” is “Docere” which means “Teacher”, one of our main goals is to educate our patients about what it means to be truly healthy, and to provide them with he tools to achieve optimal wellness.  We believe that health means much more than simply the absence of disease.  Our definition of healthy includes the ability to experience life, filled with joy, to the fullest extent within ourselves every single day.

At HealthyByNature, we aim to strengthen your foundation of health.  Patients receive a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis though extensive history taking, a thorough physical exam, and appropriate laboratory testing.  We work with people of all ages to help them restore their natural state of health and well being by identifying the cause or causes or dis-ease.  The most effective and least invasive or toxic treatments are used to support the mind and body’s ability to heal itself and restore balance.  We design a complete “program of health” individualized to each and every person, tailored to meet the needs and goals of each individual.  While conventional medicines may be a part of this “program of health”, our focus is on utilizing those therapies that are least invasive yet highly effective and safe.  Most importantly, we provide our patients with the knowledge and tools to achieve and maintain their health, to avoid the reliance on medicines and reach the fullest extent of their health potential.

Conditions

Diseases are names for a collection of symptoms or health complaints.  Symptoms are just manifestations of imbalances within the body.  To truly heal, one must focus on discovering what those symptoms represent….. underlying imbalances, or dis-ease in the body.  As such, we start by identifying these imbalances, and correcting them using the safest, least invasive therapies first.   Our goal is to treat the WHOLE person, not just the symptom, to achieve optimal health and wellness for life.

Natural Medicine is extremely effective in treating numerous health conditions, both acute and chronic, including:

  • Hormone imbalances (menopause, PMS, libido, andropause, painful menses)
  • Anti-Aging and Lifetime Optimal Health
  • Medical weight loss programs including HcG therapy
  • Flu, cold, infections
  • Fatigue
  • Digestive disorders (Constipation, diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohns Disease, gas, bloating, GERD, heartburn, indigestion)
  • Cardiovascular disorders ( High blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, cardiac health and disease prevention)
  • Pain, Arthritis
  • Dermatological disorders (eczema, psoriasis, acne, dry skin)
  • Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Endocrine disorders (Diabetes, Adrenal fatigue, diabetes, thyroid conditions)
  • Immune disorders (allergies, asthma, chronic fatigue, colds/flu, cancer, infection)
  • Neurological Disorders (ADHD/ADD, Migraines, Headaches, MS, Parkinson’s,  Alzheimer’s disease treatment and prevention)
  • Enhancement of memory and cognitive function

  • Men’s health
  • Metabolic Imbalances (Diabetes, weight loss, weight gain)
  • Overall wellness medicine, to keep you at optimal health

Our Treatments

As each patient is unique, with unique health concerns stemming from unique causes, every patient is evaluated and presented with a personalized treatment plan.  This treatment plan may be simple or complex, as necessary to achieve their health goals. Essential to every treatment plan is patient education, explaining what is going on inside their body, and teaching patients how to best support themselves through their healing process.

Though not exclusive, the following are a list of therapeutics available and integrated into treatment plans as necessary.

*        Botanical/Herbal Medicine

*        Homeopathic Medicine

*        Medical Nutrition and Targeted Supplementation

*        Stress and Lifestyle Counseling

*        Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

*        Fat Dissolve booster shots

*        Intravenous Vitamin Therapy

*        HcG Medical Weight Loss Program

*        Pharmaceutical Therapy when appropriate

*        Medically supervised Detoxification and Cleansing Programs

*        Heavy Metal Toxicity Assessment and Elimination

Bio-Identical Hormones

Bio-Identical Hormone Therapy uses hormones found naturally in the human body to return the body to a more healthy and balanced state.  Bio-Identical hormones are derived from natural plant compounds and developed to match the structure and function of the hormones produced within the human body.  They are identical to endogenous (self-made) human hormones, so the body is able to metabolize and process them normally, thus minimizing side effects.

Hormones are the messengers of the body, helping your body’s various parts communicate with each other.  They are essential to life, and maintaining healthy hormone balance is a key to optimal wellness in both men and women.

At Healthy By Nature, we formulate an individualized plan which may include Bio-Identical Hormones that are tailored specifically to your needs.  The levels used are dependent upon individual hormone needs as assessed by comprehensive laboratory analysis.  Hormones assessed may include sex hormones (Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone, and various metabolites), thyroid hormones, and adrenal hormones.  Lab analysis may include blood, saliva, or urine assessment depending on specific individual needs.

Because hormones have so many functions in the body, imbalances can lead to a host of health complaints.  Though this list is not exclusive, some common symptoms of hormone imbalances include:

  • Irritability
  • Insomnia (difficulty with sleep)
  • Fatigue
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes
  • Weight Gain
  • Irregular menstruation
  • Menopause
  • Andropause (hormonal decline accompanying aging in men)

IV Nutrient Therapy

IV nutrient therapy is an extremely safe and effective method to address many illnesses and support a patient’s road to recovery.  At HealthFusion, intravenous and intramuscular vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and homeopathics are utilized in a variety of combinations to help with many health concerns, from digestive complaint, to infections and fibromyalgia.

With this safe and effective therapy we can attain levels of nutrient absorption much higher than is possible with food or supplements. Most people who are ill have compromised digestive function or cellular absorption, and delivering essential nutrients via IV and IM routes mitigates this issue.  IV nutrients go directly into the bloodstream, and do not “pass go” through the digestive track, which is even compromised in most healthy individuals.  Oral nutrients absorb at a rate of about 20-40% in most people, whereas IV nutrients reach 100%.

Another benefit of IV nutrient therapy is that it is custom formulated just for you.  We look at your lab work, in conjunction with your symptoms, overall health, and diet/lifestyle and custom tailor a “cocktail” to match your exact needs.

Some typical IV cocktails include:

  • Multiple Vitamin/Mineral Health Booster
  • Immune Booster for Infections
  • Detoxification
  • Inflammation
  • Energizing IV

HcG Medical Weight Loss Program

This medically supervised weight loss program is a natural and effective way to attain dramatic and lasting weight loss

HcG is a natural hormone that stimulates the hypothalamus of the brain.  The hypothalamus regulates the rate at which we burn our own fat reserves.  Chronic stress, hormone imbalances, and improper diet are all known to inhibit the function of the hypothalamus.  HcG is one of the few things known to turn this mechanism on.  Many patients who come to Healthy By Nature for weight loss are fairly healthy people, who despite eating well and exercising, still struggle with excess weight.

With the HcG Program, most patients lose about a pound a day, and feel great while doing it.  The program involves a set diet while administering HcG every day.  You also receive a free  weekly “Fat Dissolve” shot to further boost metabolism.  We check in with you once a week to assess your progress, answer questions and modify as appropriate.

We provide a 3 week and 6 week program which is determined by how much weight you need to lose.  If there is a lot of weight loss needed, repeated “rounds” can be done after a few weeks.

Fat Dissolve Booster Shot

This is a special injectable nutrient cocktail that can help increase cellular energy, fat burning processes, and many other metabolic functions in the body.  Although containing vitamin B12, this cocktail is more potent than a typical B12 shot because it includes the most effective form of B12 -  methylcobalamine, as well as B6 which promotes weight loss and increases serotonin production.  A power punch is derived from the addition of 3 powerful fat burning nutrients, which are considered “lipotropics”. They are Methionine, Inositol, and Choline, all natural nutrients that the body utilizes to jump start the removal of fat from the body, as well as repairing and supporting the liver cells.  Because most people do not get optimal nutrition, in additional to being chronically overstressed, often they have difficulty absorbing and manufacturing these vital nutrients.  As a result, the liver cells may become nutrient deficient  which manifests as a sluggish liver, weight gain, fatigue, poor sleep, increased cholesterol, abrupt mood changes and many other negative effects.  Because the nutrients are delivered via injection, optimal absorption is easier to achieve.

Botanical Medicine

Many traditional cultures use plants as their primary medicine.  Most pharmaceutical drugs are actually derived from plants, and are isolates of what is found to be pharmacologically active in the plant.  However, there are many beneficial aspects to the plants other than the pharmacologically active components which are extracted for synthesis of drugs.  There is a synergistic effect of taking a plant or herb in its entirety, generating benefits beyond just the chemical effect.  In essence, the whole is more than the sum of its parts.  Botanical medicine is an art and science, working gently with the body to engender beneficial health effects.  Botanicals are used with some patients, in various forms, including supplements, herbal tinctures, and teas, and are prescribed as customized formulas as applicable.

Dr. Michelle Wolford, ND – Naturopathic Doctor – Digestive Disorders, Sports Nutrition, Natural Hormonal Balance, Auto-Immune Disorders, Lifestyle Coaching, Children’s Nutrition, Sugar Imbalances – Encinitas, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego County California

I’m honored to have you as a guest on my site.  Please enjoy the information provided and call if you have any questions!  Dr. Michelle Wolford, ND is trained as both a Natural Healer and Medical Doctor.  I primarily treat those searching for internal balance (physical, mental/emotional support and spiritual guidance), athletes, kiddo’s and patients who are interested in using natural medicine to prevent dis-ease, improve their overall health or cure illness; particularly focusing on digestive health, nervous system, immune system and endocrine system (fancy word for hormones!).

Natural medicine is about looking at all aspects of YOU- what is going on with you physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually (or energetically). The type of natural medicine Dr. Michelle uses is Earth Medicine to bring health, balance and light into your four main energetic bodies (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual).

Earth Medicine is the most powerful, yet gentle and intuitive medicine. Through Earth Medicine, you can treat acute or chronic illness.  You can also release and heal old or new emotional trauma, physical trauma, limiting beliefs or internal imbalances to create a lasting shift in your health. The type of Earth Medicine Dr. Michelle uses is Botanical Medicine, Flower Essence, Homeopathy, Native American Spirit Healing, Essential Oil and Gem Stone Chakra Balancing, Reiki, Nutrition and Natural Supplements, Intuitive Success Coaching and Lifestyle Modifications.

My passion is to educate, listen and guide you on your path to optimal wellness.  I want to show you a natural way to feel AMAZING!  To live in the flow of life free of physical ailments, emotional heaviness or self-created fear, worry, doubt and anxiety by giving you the gift of true healing, self love and freedom leading to unlimited happiness and lasting success both in personal relationships and business/school!  What do you want to see change in your life? If you weren’t afraid, what would you do differently?  What would you create?  Who would you be?

I would love to share my personal story with you!

I am a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and Intuitive Success Coach.  I finished my Naturopathic Medical degree at National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon and soon thereafter completed a certificate program in Intuitive Success Coaching in San Diego, CA.

I currently own and run Life In Motion, Naturopathic Medical Clinic and am also the owner and founder of 30-Somethings and South American Earth Medicine Retreat Center (ground breaking for building scheduled for October 2012).

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas by my two loving parents and chose to leave home at fifteen for the prestigious college preparatory school Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana on a sports scholarship.  Attracted to the outdoor lifestyle of Colorado, I made my move west and graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder with a degree in Sociology.  Soon there after left for Surfers Paradise, Australia to study the culinary arts.  Upon my return, I began a program in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at San Diego State University.

Having discovered my true purpose and passion for healing and educating BY playing and navigating my way through life and all its presenting experiences and challenges, I emerged into my true calling as a healer and naturopathic doctor.

“Abouts” always touch on our accomplishments, but the beauty of life lives within the light as well as the dark.  Unconsciously or consciously, we attract experiences into our life as learning tools to explore self and grow into our ultimate purpose.  I have had some unique experiences, but so goes the balance of life, have also been gifted with transforming experiences such as sexual abuse, four years of physical disability, loss of a lover and the death of a parent.  And, it was through natural medicine and intuitive success coaching that I was able to release old trauma, heal my physical, mental and emotional bodies and gain a different perspective on life that allowed me to continue enjoying the journey of life while constantly metamorphasizing into my ultimate person shining light, love, medicine and knowledge on others.

Dr Michelle has experience working with grief counseling around death, sexual abuse, addiction, life transition (change around career, family, relationships), whole-body balancing, kids health, sports medicine and specifically the endocrine system (hormonal systems that regulates sleep, energy, mood, temperature, thyroid function, adrenal function, testie and ovarian function, fertility and stress), the intestines (nutrition and detox both inside and outside each cell) and the Central Nervous System (brain, neurotransmitters and energy flow within).

I do believe, to truly embrace your light you must embrace your dark and love yourself equally.  It is my goal as a Naturopathic Doctor and Intuitive Success Coach to create a safe place where men, women and kids can come to truly transform their mind, body, emotions and spirit to a higher level of health enabling you to live your life on a clearer and less resistant path of wellness and purpose.

In my spare time, you can usually find Dr. Michelle paddling out at Moonlight beach for some spiritual time with the ocean, sweating out lifes toxins in yoga or running with the sun. She also enjoys playing tennis, beach volleyball and just about anything that incorporates the outdoors and people.

In addition to always learning the latest techniques and following medical updates, Dr. Michelle has a passion for foreign language, culture, dancing, music and the culinary arts. She finds great joy and passion in connecting with others and learning more about the world she lives in.

Come get to know this energetic ray of sunshine that will add a little magic to your day!

Our Philosphy:

Ideally we are all living a balanced life moving smoothly through each day enjoying all aspects of life and donating a little time to each aspect of who we are…

Much like the tires on a bike- when out of balance- it makes the ride rough, lots of work and less mileage in more time.

When our body is out of balance, it too gives us little clues to STOP and regroup.  These signs manifest as symptoms ranging anywhere from fatigue, brain fog, headaches, body aches, allergies, flushed face, chronic coldness, inability to lose/gain weight….I could go on.

Unfortunately, generally speaking, we are part of a society that “can’t be bothered”.

BUT… if you can imagine.  (Analogy) A person comes to your door and knocks.  You think, “I can’t be bothered” and decide not to answer the door.  So they choose to ring the door bell because they want your attention.

Again, you decide you “can’t be bothered”. Then, they pick up a rock and throw it in your window, break the glass and you finally get up off the couch and say “WHAT?!?”.  Well, we often do this in our lives.  We have a body ache, a headache, a little indigestion or a stuffy nose.  We can’t sleep or we get occasional skin rashes/breakouts.  We decide, we “can’t be bothered” and take something to mask the symptom.  Eventually, sometimes even 30 years later, we are at the doctors office and now we have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic fatigue, chronic allergies, joint deterioration or cancer.  That is our rock in the window.  So, be proactive and take care of your health today. You are worth it!

I like to start with what I call, basic balancing treatments.  These are simple, inexpensive, at home remedies that you can do on a daily basis to maintain and promote optimal wellness.

Then, I like to focus on your system as a whole to understand WHY YOU are presenting with YOUR symptom.  Your symptom is unique to you, so your treatment is unique to you too!

While I am treating your current symptom, I like to investigate your past and family medical history to gain a deeper understanding of you; how your immune system responds to the world we live in (Miasm), how you interact with the world you live in (Temperament) and your genes (Constitution).  These three aspects in addition to past life experiences affect your health today.  All this information gives me a better understanding of YOU!  Then, I will often focus on those particular organ systems that may need some support.  From there we treat the current symptom by palliating the issue, searching for the root cause to then retrain the body how to function optimally so you are NOT on medication or supplementation for the rest of your life.  We then continue to emphasize the importance of practicing your basic balancing treatments daily.

One of the most famous Naturopaths from the 1800′s, Samuel Hahnemann (mostly known for his Homeopathy- one of many treatment modality that Naturopaths use today) said, “The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”

Naturopathic Medicine has been a part of our culture for thousands of years.  Embrace the world that has supported us for so long.

Food is medicine!   Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.) said, “Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food.”  For an old guy, he was right on the money!  Our world has provided us with everything we need to live a full, healthy and happy life.

Dr Michelle practices a special and unique form of Naturopathic Medicine that detoxifies the intra and extracellular matrix of your physical, emotional, energetic (or etheric), mental and spiritual body using the different remedy categories described below.  Each category has 20+ different plant, homeopathic and in some cases glandular properties that are specifically created to move your imbalance back to a state of flow and harmony.  Her treatment protocols are helpful to those with extreme dis-ease as well as those just needing a shift, support or wanting to dive into the true meaning of health and wellness.

Six Guiding Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

1. Primum Non Nocere – First Do No Harm:

Naturopathic Medicine uses safe and effective therapies.

2. Vis Medicatrix Naturae – The Healing Power of Nature:

The human body possesses the inherent ability to restore its own health. The physician's role is to facilitate this with the aid of natural, non-toxic therapies.

Naturopathic Physicians seek and treat the underlying cause of a disease. Symptoms are viewed as the body's natural attempt to heal. The origin of disease is removed, or treated, so the patient can recover.

3. Tolle Causam – Discover and Treat the Cause, Not Just the Effect:

4. Tolle Totum – Treat the Whole Person:

Multiple factors in health and disease are considered while treating the whole person. Naturopathic Physicians provide flexible treatment programs to meet individual health needs.

5. Docere – The Naturopathic Physician is a Teacher:

The Naturopathic Physician's major role is to educate, empower, and motivate patients to take responsibility for their own health. Creating a healthy, cooperative relationship with the patient is therapeutically valuable.

6. Principils Obsta: Sero Medicina Curator – Prevention is the Best Cure:

Naturopathic Physicians are specialists in prevention. They assess patient risk factors and heredity susceptibility, and intervene appropriately to reduce risk, and prevent illness.

Natural Hormone Replacement
As the side effects of synthetic hormones become increasingly known, women are seeking safer alternatives. An individualized plan of natural hormone replacement using plant-based, bio-identical hormones can greatly aid PMS symptoms, infertility and female and male menopause.
Oxygen Therapy
This therapy was developed to minimize degenerative conditions due to aging and to support the immune system. Oxygen is breathed through a mask during exercise to increase oxygen supply to the organs and to increase the body's metabolic rate. Oxygen therapy is used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic infections, Lyme disease, and low energy.
Enzyme Therapy
The use of very specific enzymes to restore normal bodily functions. At times, a person deficient in only one enzyme can experience pain, anxiety, yeast overgrowth, constipation, fatigue, etc. By treating the deficiency with the appropriate enzyme, ailments can be resolved.
Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Supplements
Nutritional and herbal supplements stimulate the immune system, balance hormones and fight infection. Proper supplementation can mean the difference between sickness and health.
Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicine has been used successfully for over 200 years by physicians worldwide. Homeopathy is based on the idea that "like cures like"; that very small amounts of a substance will cure symptoms that are caused by larger amounts of the same substance. Homeopathic remedies are very safe and extremely effective for treating children and infants.
Auricular Therapy
The ear contains acupuncture points that correspond to all parts of the body. Small pellets are placed on acupuncture points in the ear to exert constant pressure over the course of one week. This therapy is more subtle than acupuncture but is extremely effective for certain conditions.
Laboratory Testing
Blood Testing
This may include a CBC (complete blood count), Chem Screen or SMAC, Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, Thyroid Hormone Levels, or other tests commonly used by the medical profession. This information is very important to appropriately diagnose physical illnesses.
Urine Testing
Depending on the physical ailment, a urine sample may have to be sent to a laboratory for detailed disgnostic testing. Usually, an in-office urine dipstick test will diagnose urinary tract infections and other acute illnesses.
Alternative Testing
Meridian Assessment
This assessment is performed by measuring the acupuncture points (without puncture), on the fingers. Points on the fingers correlate with organs in the body. By measuring these points, assessment of organ function is possible.
Enzyme Assessment
The most common reason for this assessment is for digestive problems such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, gas and bloating, etc., as the job of enzymes is to digest food. In addition to this, enzymes play large roles in bodily functions, such as in the healing of tissues, control of inflammation and allergic reactions, burning of fat, clarity of mental function, etc., making this test useful even if there are no digestive issues.
Vitamin Assessment
To detect vitamin deficiencies rampant in this country due to stress, poor dietary habits, and highly processed foods.
Mineral Assessment
To detect mineral deficiencies mainly due to the mineral-poor-soil that our food is grown in. Minerals are needed for proper immunity, digestive function, liver function, stress management, detoxification, brain function, and other crucial bodily functions.
Food Sensitivity Assessment
To pinpoint food intolerances which are common causes for headaches, fatigue, depression, insomnia, anxiety, migraines, and digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, reflux, and constipation.
Hormone Assessment

Most people think of hormones in terms of female hormones (estrogen and progesterone), or male hormones, (testosterone). There are also several other hormones including DHEA (which affects libido, weight loss and energy levels), and thyroid hormones (which affect metabolism).

Much press of late has stated that hormones are dangerous. This has only been shown to be true with synthetic progesterone and animal extracted estrogens. Natural Hormones are very useful if one is deficient in them. They should not be used if deficiencies are not detected.

Metabolic Assessment
This assessment looks at the functional levels of many substances including some which have a direct effect on metabolism. In addition, it also looks at other substances necessary for proper health. This assessment is most useful when someone has depression, anxiety, a history of heart disease, brain function issues, fatigue, and the inability to lose weight.

Dr. Gant specializes in Functional Medicine and Predictive Genomics (gene testing). By defining his patient's unique biochemical and genetic risk factors, he is able to address many root causes of their chronic medical and psychological problems. Dr. Gant also integrates mindfulness-based psychotherapies to address psychospiritual issues.

Dr. CE Gant has practiced Functional Medicine , Holistic and Integrative Medicine and Psychotherapy for  over 36 years. While in private practice and while serving in medical directorships and consultancies to many clinics and hospitals in the Central New York area over decades, Dr. Gant instituted and perfected various integrative treatment regimens of nutritional therapy, detoxification, neurotransmitter, hormonal and metabolic rebalancing, and mindfulness-based, reconstructive psychotherapies, to support the recoveries of his patients from all kinds of common, chronic medical and psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Gant has treated many kinds of medical disorders such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, but a significant portion of his work has focused on natural, drug-free treatments for brain disorders such as AD/HD, Addiction (prescription drugs, tobacco, alcohol, other drugs), and Mood Disorders (depression). His work spanning most of 4 decades is summarized in various publications such as the books: ADD and ADHD: Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) Solutions (2008- 2nd edition),End Your Addiction Now (2010- Square One Publishers)End Nicotine Addiction Now (2010- 2nd edition), and ADHD (Attentional Disintegration of Hurt and Distress) Therapies, Basic Concepts in Integrative, Complementary and Alternative Medicine (2003).  He teaches these topics via lectures, workshops and webinar trainings (see: www.AcademyofFunctionalMedicine.com.)

Dr. CE Gant's philosophy. Dr. Gant concentrates most intensively on the molecular aspects of care because of the astonishing paucity of such therapeutic opportunities for those suffering from causative nutritional deficiencies, toxicities, neurotransmitter, hormonal/metabolic abnormalities, and genetic vulnerabilities to all of the above. Amassed scientific research strongly suggests that the solutions to alcohol, tobacco and drug addiction (#1 cause of death and disability), to common mental disorders such as AD/HD, depression and anxiety, and to most chronic medical disorders, awaits us at the molecular level of understanding. Rather than merely covering up symptoms with drugs, we should be using a science-based, diagnostic approach to precisely identify and reverse the molecular causes of psychological and physical suffering. Dr. Gant has been branded a "healer" but he believes that identification with  such egotistical labels is limiting. He does not envision healing as an end unto itself, however well perfected certain methodologies become. Instead he sees healing as a means to an end, because the longer we can stay reasonably healthy and enjoy mental clarity, the more potential we have to discover a spiritual purpose for being alive and functional, and to joyfully share our human experience with others.

First Priority in Providing Health Care

Diagnose and Treat the Root Biochemical Causes of Suffering

For nearly 4 decades I have provided “healthcare” for 10s of thousands of patients. In my opinion, authentic “care” entails taking the time and making the effort to deeply understand the root, unique, physical causes of each patient’s suffering. I have become skilled at reversing chronic medical and psychiatric disorders because I address the actual biochemical causes, but I would never label myself as a healer. I only facilitate a release of my patient’s biochemical potential for self-healing, which is already written into the very fabric of their 100+ trillion cells. Practitioners who define themselves as “healers” could not possess such knowledge about our vast, innate, self-regulating capacity to heal, and they must consequently limit their capacity to provide authentic “care.”

The knowledge originating from providing decades of health “care” has led me to realize that the so-called “healthcare crisis” is a crisis of ignorance, a preoccupation with diagnostic labels and diseases which somehow magically “just happen” without well-defined causes. I “care” to much about my patients to allow them to suffer from this delusion, so one of my first tasks as a healthcare provider is to make it clear that all chronic diseases, maladies, disorders and illnesses are merely fantasized labels for various types of mental and physical suffering that we had invented over the ages before we had the science to know what the underlying causes actually were. Now that the physical causes of most diseases are well known, I “care-fully” and urgently suggest to my patients, practitioners and now to you, that we all break through this ignorance and achieve far better outcomes than we are currently getting.

The healthcare field uniquely epitomizes a level of ignorance which I have not seen in other walks of life. For example, highway engineers would never describe a breakdown of transportation infrastructure in terms of certain “bridge diseases” or “road disorders.” Instead, they would describe that breakdown in terms of the infrastructure’s composition, such as the wear and tear on its constitutional steel, concrete and asphalt. Furthermore, they would describe certain factors which are “toxic” to the longevity of our roads and bridges, such as salt and extreme weather conditions, and suggest methods for limiting those “aging” effects. Why has the healthcare system failed to define health problems in this way?

Essential Molecules

Essentially, the infrastructure of your body is made of certain classes of molecules: 20+ amino acids (from protein), several essential fatty acids (e.g., omega 3’s from fish oil), essential vitamins, essential minerals, oxygen, fiber, water, sunlight (photons are particles too) and enzymes (from raw foods like uncooked fruit). Note that these are essential, which implies that if any of these are deficient enough, the basic mechanisms underlying life must (by definition) breakdown, and symptoms, maladies, illnesses, disorders and diseases must occur.

Functional Medicine Testing

Out of “caring” for my patient’s “health,” I must not let this happen, so I routinely order functional medicine testing to diagnose precisely what is deficient in each and every patient, and then replenish those missing, essential items. (seewww.AcademyofFunctionalMedicine.com,www.FunctionalMedicine.org and www.HealthSolutionCenter.com)

More importantly, I also order in-depth, diagnostic testing for toxins (AKA – “Toxic Load”), which accelerate a breakdown of my patient’s infrastructure, contributing to the appearance of symptoms and “diseases,” accelerating aging and causing premature death. If you cared for someone being poisoned, would you sit idly by and let it happen? How can we practitioners let this happen under the guise of providing “care?” And since medications are also contributing toxins, mostly prescribed to merely cover up symptoms, I am interested in eventually detoxifying those as well, so that my patient’s innate, self-healing mechanisms can be restored.

Some of the classes of toxins which I routinely test for and address are:

1) All drugs, especially addictive, brain-injurious, psychotropic chemicals (alcohol, tobacco, illicit or prescribed chemicals).

2) Heavy metals, especially mercury, cadmium, arsenic and lead.

3) Mycotoxins (myco = mold or fungus toxins, derived from chronic intestinal, sinus infections, toxic living environments).

4) Toxic, allergy-causing food proteins.

5) Environmental toxins, especially petrochemicals (toxins from solvents, cleaners and petroleum products) and halogens (chlorine, fluorine and bromine).

6) Toxins derived from chronic infections such as Lyme, gastrointestinal organisms (unfriendly bacteria and parasites), dental toxins (abscessed root canals and implants).

7) Junk-food toxins, especially trans fats and all processed carbohydrates (also addictive).

8 ) Polluted air and water (requires air and water purifiers).

9) EM pollution (EM = ElectroMagnetic – microwaves, fluorescent lighting, generators).

Neurotransmitters

A third important class of molecules which contributes to a healthy functioning of our body’s and brain’s infrastructure are the cell-to-cell communicators called neurotransmitters and hormones, which are synthesized from nutrients. If these are imbalanced or deficient, especially during certain hormonally stressful periods of life, like menopause or when my patients use drugs, take medications and/or abuse alcohol, I routinely replenish these natural (bio-identical), “feel good” molecules to help stabilize their mood, clear thinking, attentiveness and function.

How could I let my patients struggle through life with easily correctable depression, anxiety and AD/HD and continue to call myself a competent, caring doctor? Why would I prescribe bizarre, psychotropic chemicals with serious side effects when natural interventions are safer, less expensive, sustainable and more effective?

Genetic Testing

Finally, some of my patients suffer from a fourth infrastructure problem – genetic quirks (called polymorphisms) – which interfere with their proper utilization of nutrients listed above, with their detoxification abilities and with their optimal synthesis of hormones and neurotransmitters. Genetic testing is especially useful when nutritional repletion, detoxification and neurotransmitter/hormonal balancing is unsuccessful, which is unusual. To “care” for my patients means to fully understand them, and I am compelled to go the extra mile and understand their genetic vulnerabilities too. Genetic testing can be an integral part of that care in some patients.

Warning! Unless specially trained, your healthcare practitioner is not functional medicine competent. They probably don’t know how to diagnose or treat the underlying causes of chronic medical and psychiatric disorders. Your doctor was probably trained like me, to prescribe toxic chemicals (drugs) to cover up the symptoms caused by these root determinants of chronic diseases described above, or to perform surgery or radiation therapies (e.g., poison, cut and burn respectively), all of which can be life saving technologies for the very worst, acute or end-stage breakdown of one’s infrastructure.

But if you actually cared for someone, would you only offer to cut, burn or poison them? Would you only declare war on their bodies or would you also look for sustainable, diplomatic solutions?

TV and Hollywood shows such as Bones and Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCSI) have popularized the power of functional medicine testing in solving crimes. Strangely, these powerful technologies are not taught to healthcare practitioners to “catch” the culprits causing chronic medical and psychiatric problems!

However, they are becoming increasingly available in a direct-to-consumer testing format (e.g., www.labcorp.com), so that smart consumers like you don’t have to wait several decades for the over-regulation-stymied and pharmaceutical-profit-obsessed healthcare system to catch up with this technological revolution.

Integrative Medicine

Care for yourself and those you love by self-testing for nutritional deficiencies, toxicities, neurotransmitter and hormonal imbalances, and even genetic quirks, and release your/their inner, innate healing capacities. Your consumer activism can take us all one step closer to authentic healthcare reform.

Unfortunately, medical school curricula do not include courses such as “caring for and loving your patients 101” or “authentic healing technologies 203.” The terms love, care and healing are hardly even mentioned. We are taught to maintain a “clinical detachment” and to not get too wrapped up in a deep, abiding concern for our patients. But I am certain that a career of deeply caring for my patient’s outcomes has been the essential element which has compelled me to go beyond the superficial “covering up” of symptoms with drugs, and to search more deeply for the actual roots of my patient’s suffering.

As I have become an expert in nutritional, toxicological, hormonal and genetic science, I now see that all healthcare systems throughout the world are misrepresenting themselves by suggesting that authentic care is actually being delivered. “Caring” for our patient’s minds, bodies and spirits must be inextricably linked to competence in functional medicine otherwise we are guilty of fraud.

Call it good science or a higher standard of care. Call it holistic, integrative or complementary medicine. I simply call it caring, and I encourage you to expect nothing less from your healthcare practitioner.

The Academy of Functional Medicine, Dentistry and Psychology

The Academy of Functional Medicine, Dentistry and Psychology offers training courses in functional medicine to healthcare practitioners and health coaches. Functional medicine examines primary prevention and underlying causes instead of the symptoms for serious chronic disease with the goal of understanding each individual patient’s physiological, environmental, and psychosocial contexts within which his or her illnesses or dysfunctions occur.

Functional medicine seeks to control or reverse each person’s physiological imbalances through individualized therapy based primarily on laboratory diagnostic testing performed by certified, specialized laboratories. Enhancement of patients’/client’s self- empowerment with a collaborative relationship between patient/client and healthcare practitioner or health coach, based on an understanding and knowledge of a patient’s/client’s unique biochemistry, metabolism, toxicology and genetics as determined by laboratory testing is the goal in all encounters.

The textbook: Laboratory Evaluations for Integrative and Functional Medicine by Drs. Lord and Bralley (also on CD) will be provided.

George Mandler, LDN, LicAC - Acupuncture, Nutrition, Digestive Disorders, Food Sensitivities, Infertility, Pain Management, Fatigue, Allergies – Stow, Massachusetts

About George Mandler, LicAC, LDN - I began studying nutrition and Eastern healing arts over 20 years ago because of my own health issues.  My personal health experience coupled with formal education as well as continually studying the work of  brilliant practitioners and researchers reflects in the positive results my patients experience.   I am dedicated to my work and helping people that are ready to take ownership of their health.

My acupuncture treatments are mostly  the Japanese style of my primary teacher, internationally known Sensei Kiiko Matsumoto, whom I studied with for several years.  I also utilize a style taught through disciples of  a Taiwanese acupuncturist known as Master Tung Ching-Chang (1916-1975).   I am humbled at the depth and breadth of these Masters' expertise and generosity as well as their disciples' generosity.

My personal and clinical experience tells me that diet is one of the most important aspects of health.   If the diet is inappropriate for an individual then the acupuncture may not be as effective.   Therefore I also practice Integrative Functional Nutrition for which I have extensive training.    Included with nutrition are excellent quality herbal medicines and supplementation which I use when appropriate for patients.

I am a Licensed Acupuncturist and Licensed Dietitian specializing in digestive disorders and food sensitivities which can cause symptoms such as Migraines, Fibromyalgia, Fatigue, Immune challenges, Autoimmune, and Arthritis.

I also successfully treat a wide range of conditions such as Adrenal Fatigue, Blood Sugar Issues, Thyroid Imbalances, Infertility, Musculoskeletal, and Postpartum health.

I am  a faculty member at the New England School of Acupuncture where I teach western nutrition, Chinese nutrition, and a  continuing education class on "Nutrition for Acupuncturists".   My office is in Stow, MA at Integrative Wellness where I practice along with my wife Joy Mandlerand Dr Linda Reynolds.   We have a sweet clinic with private rooms and a community treatment room.  Please come in for a visit.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

All traditional cultures have used some form of herbal medicine to treat illness and maintain health. The medicine we need to heal ourselves often grows all around us. For instance, aspirin was created from research on white willow bark, a substance that has traditionally been used as a form of herbal medicine in some Native American cultures.

Modern medicine is now studying many of the Chinese herbs that have been used for thousands of years. In fact, Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) even predates acupuncture, having been firmly established by 200BC (at the latest).

By the first century AD, much documentation of medicinal herbs and formulas already existed, and many of these are still in use today. Since its inception, Chinese Herbal Medicine has established how to differentiate between various dis-eased states and how to match the right prescription to the particular dis-ease. The thousands of years of accumulated knowledge help to make CHM a powerful healing modality.

Herbs can be either raw, powdered concentrate, or patent. All herbs follow strict manufacturing standards and many of the herbs are certified organic.

The raw form is one that you cook yourself. If you love to cook and love the smell of herbs, then this is an excellent choice, especially as it is often the best method of treatment. All raw herbs used by George are either certified organic or guaranteed to have been grown without pesticides or herbicides.

Powdered formulas are concentrated herbal extracts that are much easier to use than raw herb. In fact, one only needs to mix them in hot or warm water. They are also guaranteed to be grown without harmful chemicals and are imported from Taiwan.

Patent formulas are pre-made herbal blends much like an over the counter vitamin supplement. They are prescribed in cases where a patient's condition exactly matches the indications of the formula, or when convenience or cost is the most important factor. These formulas either come from Japan or the United states and follow strict manufacturing standards.

Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a proven medical modality for treating a variety of ailments. It is a one part of the comprehensive system of Chinese Medicine used for at least 2000 years. Acupuncture is used to treat illness, prevent disease and improve well-being by inserting needles in a specific combination at select points throughout the body. Due to its proven effectiveness, it has become popular throughout the world.

What are the needles like?
George Mandler uses only FDA approved sterile, hair thin disposable needles. They are only used once. These needles are carefully manufactured under the guidance of FDA and carries no risk of infection. Some people are afraid of needles because of their experience with hypodermic needles which are designed to tear through skin and blood vessels. Acupuncture needles are designed to painlessly penetrate the skin at a shallow depth. In fact a dozen acupuncture needles can fit in the opening of one hypodermic needle.

Does acupuncture hurt?
A common reaction with first time patients is "…you already put a needle in?". Most of the time you hardly feel them inserted into the skin.
Once an acupuncture needle is inserted you may feel a sensation of warmth, heaviness or energy moving through the body. The vast majority of people, even those who were afraid of acupuncture, find the experience very relaxing and rejuvenating.

What conditions does George treat using acupuncture?
The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture effective for a variety of ailments some of which include:
General: Allergies, Asthma, Sinusitis, Headaches, TMJ, Back Pain, Sciatica, Musculoskeletal Problems, Insomnia, Anxiety, Dizziness, Depression, High Blood Pressure, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Addictions, Indigestion, Constipation, Sexual Dysfunction, Post-Operative Recovery, Palliative Care.
Women's Health: Menstrual Irregularities, Menopause, Conception Difficulties, Pregnancy, Childbirth, Lactation Difficulties, Postpartum, Ovarian and Uterine Problems.
Men's Health: Prostate, Infertility, Impotence.
Preventative Health: Prevention, Stress Management, Wellness, Seasonal Attunement.

George has special interest and excellent results with the following conditions:

  • Digestive issues such as IBS, colitis, gas, bloating
  • Fatigue including CFS
  • Maternal Health especially during pregnancy and post-partum care
  • Pain management especially of the lower back, neck and shoulders

How does acupuncture work?
In Chinese medicine, the points lie along pathways called "meridians." The acupuncture needles help balance energy flow throughout the body. Modern research is currently attempting to uncover the physiology of these meridians, and one theory suggests that they lie along the fascial planes of the body. The fascia is a three dimensional matrix of tissue that covers our entire body, and recent research has shown that it contains intricate inter-cellular signaling.Over 80% of all major acupuncture points lie within fascial boundaries between muscles and bones, and certain meridian systems directly correspond with fascial planes.
Acupuncture adjusts and stimulates your healing energy to improve the health of your inner (organ function) or outer (musculoskeletal) body. Acupuncture performed correctly helps bring the body back into homeostasis, or balance. Acupuncture is adaptogenic, meaning that it helps the body adapt to different stresses and to generally normalize its functions. For the majority of people, the treatment is so relaxing that at some point they'll fall asleep.

What conditions can you treat with acupuncture?
Most common health conditions can be effectively treated with acupuncture. George has special interest in digestive disorders, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain and perinatal care.

What should I wear?
You should wear comfortable clothing. You can wear baggy pants or sweats on the bottom and a comfortable shirt on top. George needs to be able to have access to your abdomen and arms below the elbow and legs below the knee. If you are coming from work you can bring a change of clothes.

How many sessions do I need and how often should I get treated?
Each person is different in terms of frequency and duration of treatment. For acute conditions you may come in three times per week for 2 weeks. For a chronic condition you may come in more often, say two times per week for a few weeks, then down to once every other week. It really depends on your condition and you can discuss your concerns with George.

How long does a session last?
Each session is usually about 1 – 1.5 hours. It depends on the condition and the patient's time constraints as some patients desire shorter or longer sessions.
Your initial comprehensive session will last at least 1 hour 30 minutes.

How much does acupuncture cost?
The normal fee for acupuncture is $25-$75 per session depending on how many times per week you need to be treated. The initial session is an additional $20 for the comprehensive intake.
Since George is a licensed dietitian, acupuncture sessions almost always include a discussion about diet and supplements which is a cornerstone to good health. Each session is much more than just inserting needles as diet, lifestyle, supplements and herbal remedies are often discussed.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?
George is a preferred provider for all Massachusetts plans that contract with acupuncturists as preferred providers. Currently those plans are: Aetna, Cigna, United, Fidelity HPHC HMO. If you have insurance coverage with one of these plans they are billed directly and you are responsible for copay.

For other insurance plans that cover acupuncture (e.g. BC/BS Federal) and out of state plans (e.g. BC/BS California, Florida) George will provide you with a Superbill that you can submit for reimbursement. Please check your individual plan for your acupuncture benefits as coverage can vary within the same insurance carrier. State plans such as Commonwealth Care plans offer you a rebate for out of pocket acupuncture expenses.

All acupuncture treatments are covered under pre-tax health savings accounts. You can use health savings plan credit cards or submit superbills for all acupuncture visits.

Find out how you can benefit from acupuncture by making a free 15 minute consultation appointment. Call 978-461-2001.

"I didn’t even tell George anything was wrong. Yet he knew my symptoms just by checking my tongue and pulse. I was sold. Since starting treatment for fatigue, my energy has been steadily increasing and I’m functioning at a steadily higher level. As a single mom, this is vitally important.”
-Janet B, Maynard, MA

Integrative Nutrition

George combines modern Functional Medicine with ancient Chinese Medicine to uncover underlying physiologic nutritional imbalances. Just about anyone can benefit from a nutritional evaluation as the food we eat can be the cure or the cause for our ills.

At your first meeting you will be given dietary recommendations and possibly herbal, supplement or other lifestyle recommendations that will improve your health. All recommendations are individualized and unique to each person. Subsequent visits vary from every other week to every 2+ months, as each person is given different treatment plans.

At your first nutrition appointment please bring with you: (The forms below are downloaded from my clinic's website www.iwellnesscenter.com)

  1. 7 Day Diet Activity
  2. Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire
  3. Health History Questionnaire
  4. Any testing that you have had done in the past 2 years. (blood, urine, stool, saliva, skin prick testing etc). You can request copies from your PCP.
  5. All supplements you are currently taking.

At your nutrition appointment George will utilizes your diet history, a nutritional assessment form, lab testing, Chinese Medicine diagnosis, and plenty of discussion to best assess your health. This combination helps uncover physiological imbalances and assists in painting a clearer picture of what nutritional approaches would serve you best. One type of nutrition does not fit everyone. We are all individuals. Some folks do great as a vegetarian; some folks need to eat meat; for many a Mediterranean type diet will serve them well. In addition, different phases of life require a different diet, such as pregnancy and breast feeding.

You will be given dietary and lifestyle modifications specific for your body at this particular time. If necessary further blood, urine or saliva testing will be used to uncover biochemical imbalances in your body.

George is a Preferred Provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield

George has a deep understanding of an issue that has become increasingly confusing to the layperson:
• What should I eat?
• What foods should I avoid?
• Are the foods I'm eating causing my symptoms?
• Are the supplements I'm taking worth my money?
• What supplements should I take and in what dosages?
• How long should I take these supplements?

This nutritional knowledge is enormously helpful, but the addition of his Chinese Medicine knowledge makes it far more effective. Because Chinese medicine and diagnosis addresses the root of the problem, he is able to help you is able to start feeling better quickly.

“George possesses profound practical knowledge about the body’s complex systems as well as a deep intuitive wisdom that enables him to identify the root of a person’s imbalance.”
-Amy H, Personal Chef and Triathlete, Newton, MA

This ability to diagnose properly, combined with skill in acupuncture and Chinese herbs, and a vast and current knowledge of nutrition, create a dynamic healing combination.

You’ll find that what you need to eat and what supplements you need to take aren’t the same as what someone else needs to eat and take. No wonder you’re so confused!

George will also determine whether or not any combination of Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and/or shiatsu will be effective for your situation.

With our help, your health problems will abate and eventually be healed.

What Are The Benefits Of IV Therapy? - By Dr. Joseph Dubroff, ND – Prolotherapy, HCG Weight Loss, Autoimmune Disorders, IV Nutrition Therapy and Thyroid Disorders – Naturopathic Doctor – Carlsbad, Newport Beach, Ladera Ranch, San Diego County, California
  • Energy
  • Preventative Care
  • Complete Absorption of Nutrients
  • Direct Delivery to Organs and Tissues
  • Improves immune function
  • Increase intracellular Nutrient Levels Rapidly

About IV Therapy

IV (intravenous) therapy is used to administer nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and other medicines directly into the blood stream.  because this method bypasses the need for medicines to be absorbed through the digestive system nutrients are better able to tissues in need.  for instance high oral intake of nutrients is simply not possible due to digestive/absorptive limitations.  One good example of this is the use of Vitamin C in trying to overcome a cold due to a viral infection.  the useful antiviral affects of Vit C are seen when 10-15 mg/dl.  This level is achievable with IV therapy but usually not with oral dosing.  Oral  dosage usually peaks with levels at around  1.2-4 mg/dl vs IV therapy levels of 50-90 mg/dl.  Besides digestve/absorptive limitations our capacity to absorn can be altered through increasing age and digestive functional changes, the experieince of stress, becoming immune compromised, experieince of impaired digestive function,  many chronic illnesses, etc.

Simply stated IV therapy patient's blood nutrient levels rise more significantly then oraly administration would ever allow for a number of reasons.   these optimal levels promote a generalized healing and have tremendous effects upon metabolism, energy and disease prevention and treatment.

IV formula's are specificaly designed based on individual health needs. Specific blood tests 9i.e. Intracellular Nutrient and Antioxidant Testing) can be done to assess if there are any nutrient deficiencies.

Holistic Pain Management And Treatment Is Possible With Acupuncture! - By Dr. Ioenela Hubbard – Acupuncture, Integrative Cancer Treatment, Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine, Holistic Healing, Immune System Disorders, Chronic Pain Doctor – Loma Linda, Santa Ana, Orange County, California

The Integrative Functional Medicine approach to chronic pain takes in consideration all components of the human biological system, observes their interactions and environmental influences, and determines its root cause(s). Only by addressing the root cause of your pain using individualized and holistic treatments, we can accomplish lasting pain management.

Conventional pain management relies on pharmacological applications such as narcotics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or pain modifiers such as tricyclic antidepressants or anticonvulsants.  Integrative Functional Pain Medicine also employs non-pharmacologic interventions such as physical therapy, physical exercise, acupuncture, laser therapy, herbal and dietary supplements.

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China over 2,500 years ago, acupuncture has become popular in the United States over the past four decades. It is a natural method of encouraging the body to promote healing and improve functioning. Research has shown that needling specific acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These substances will either change the sensation of pain, or they will trigger the release of neurotransmitters and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities and in promoting health.

Scope of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a system that assists these three areas of health care:
- Improves health and well-being
- Prevents illnesses
- Treats many medical conditions
Acupuncture is often associated with pain control. In the hands of a well-trained practitioner, it can do this and much more. Acupuncture can be effective by itself or it can assist with other types of treatment for many medical and surgical disorders. Acupuncture treatments can be given at the same time as other techniques, such as conventional Western medicine, osteopathic or chiropractic adjustments, and homeopathic or naturopathic prescriptions. It is important that all of your health care providers know everything that you are doing, so that they can help you get the most benefit from all of your treatments.

World Health Organization
The WHO recognizes acupuncture to be beneficial in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Digestive disorders: gastritis, hyper-acidity, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea
  • Respiratory disorders: sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections
  • Neurological and muscular disorders: headache, facial tics, trigeminal neuralgia, neck pain, rib neuritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, low back pain, osteoarthritis, sciatica, stroke rehabilitation
  • Pain Management: fibromyalgia, chronic regional pain syndrome, post-operative pain, dental pain, sinusitis
  • Urinary disorders: incontinence, bed wetting, recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Women's health: menstrual disorders, infertility, pregnancy related issues, menopause
  • Men's health: urinary and reproductive problems
  • General conditions: stress related issues, insomnia, anxiety, depression, addictions, chemotherapy related issues, skin disorders (wound healing, acne), and many other conditions.

How Many Treatments Do I Need?
Dr. Hubbard will perform a careful evaluation and develop your individualized treatment plan. The treatment plan usually calls for a series of six to ten acupuncture treatments to restore health and optimum function.

HCG Weight Loss:

Homeopathic HCG and Internet Programs:

are they effective and are they safe?

Actual HCG hormone, not homeopathic HCG, is a safe and effective program for weight loss.

The actual hormone HCG must legally be prescribed by a licensed doctor.

Many people are purchasing homeopathic HCG from the internet.  It is doubtful that homeopathic HCG will have the same results as the actual hormone HCG. Homeopathic HCG is diluted to such a point that it is completely unreasonable to expect any level of actual HCG hormone in homeopathic preparations. It is the hormonal action of HCG that is thought to produce weight loss along with a restricted calorie diet.   The benefits of homeopathic HCG weight loss are solely the result of a 500 calorie diet. It is not uncommon for people to come see me post homeopathy hcg/500 calorie diet with their hair falling out and trouble with metabolic recovery. Our programs starts at 1000-1200 calorie diets. People report not being hungry on this program and typically are very pleased with their weight loss, typically 3-5 lbs a week.  I’m yet to experience any metabolic down regulating affects as in a 500 calorie homeopathic diet programs….homeopathic hcg is not the hormone Hcg.

Our Modified 1000 Calorie Hcg Diet:
To be successful in losing weight it must first be determined by a medical professional if there are any possible medical conditions that are in the way of weight loss.  A series of questions followed by appropriate lab work if necessary will determine if there are medical issues that need to be addressed.  Sound nutritional counseling will ensure keeping the weight off for the long run.

There is no need to start with a 500 calorie diet.  Our modified hcg program blends a limited caloric intake (starting at 1000 calories) with a ketogenic diet (20-60 grams of carbohydrates a day).  When the body consumes low carbohydrates it must start breaking down fat reserves to meet blood sugar needs. Ketogenic diets mean limited bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and corn. Of course this also means absolutely no soda, candy or processed snack foods. Fruit and complex vegetable carbohydrates are allowed in limited quantities. In our modified hcg program we teach you to count calories to achieve Hcg success while also counting carbs to achieve ketogenic success.  Hcg causes increased utilization of fat reserves during a limited caloric intake while the ketogenic shift towards decreasing carbohydrates further demands the use of fat reserves.  This combination is a winning  rapid weight loss program.

This initial approach is usually all that is needed for most people to lose between 3-5 lbs a week.

Natural Medicine and Hypothyroid

There is no need to stay fatigued because conventional medicine does not have the answer to your fatigue!

Many Natural Medical Answers to Hypothyroid

Bioidentical Hormones

Supplemental medicine geared at symptoms and lab findings

Environmental Treatment: exposure to Halogens such as Fluoride and Bromine can impair Iodine and thyroid function.

Thyroid function and adrenal function are one very important hormonal relationship.

A Big Myth About Hypothyriodism:

Have you been told that your blood work rules out thyroid issues?

Do you still have all the typical symptoms listed at the top of this page?

Have you had fatigue and weight gain ever since pregnancy?

If the answer is yes, then………………..

You are probably Hypothyroid!

The conventional diagnosis of hypothyroidism rests on both a high blood Thyroid-stimulating-Hormone (TSH) and a low level of the inactive thyroid hormone  thyroxine (T4).  TSH, produced in the brain, stimulates the production of T4, produced in the thyroid, which is then converted to T3 which is the active thyroid hormone.  But many people with hypothyroid have normal TSH and T4 levels.  This is because these two indicators alone are not sensitive enough for all cases of hypothyroidism.  There are a number of tests that can be performed that more adequately assess thyroid function.

An Easy at Home Test:

Many health experts believe the basal body temperature-the temperature of your body at rest-is the most sensitive test of thyroid function. The test is simple all you need is a thermometer.

Plan to take the test first thing in the morning after you wake.  this is because it is important to measure your temp after a full nights sleep.

Before you go to bed shake down your thermometer to below 95 degrees and keep it by your bed.

Immediately upon waking, place the thermometer under your armpit, held in place by your arm pressed agaisn’t your side for a count of 10.

Read and record the temp and the date.

Repeat the test for at least 3 days at the same time of day.

An average reading of between 97.6 and 98.2 is normal.  Anything lower could indicate hypothyroid.

Note: Menstruating women have to take the test upon their second, third and fourth day of menstruation.  Men and post menopausal women can take their temp at any time.
It is now widely believed by a large body of researches and doctors that these blood indices alone are insufficient for uncovering all cases of hypothyroidism or otherwise under active metabolism.

Has Standard Thyroid Medicine Fallen Short: covering all the possibilities

There are a number of considerations that should be addressed.  In general hormones tend to work together and have many effects upon each other.  Environmental considerations at times can block receptor function and lead to low T3 levels/hypothyroidism.

Anemia and other conditions can express as fatigue and need to be considered.

Estrogen dominance this is where there is more estrogen then progesterone-this is typical of perimenopausal.

Low Testosterone - can mimic many of the symptoms of hypothyroid.

Altered Adrenal Function: responsible for the stress response as well as metabolism and energy. Depleted hormones such as Cortisol and DHEA can increase the demands upon the thyroid.

Heavy Metals may be blocking the conversion of T4 to T3-inactive to active hormone.

Prolotherapy: an impressive solution to all sorts of physical pains

Get Pain Free

Heals and regenerates injured tissues.

Very effective.

The major alternative to surgical procedures for chronic pain.

Needle procedure treats interface of ligaments, tendons and or cartilage.

Easy to assess need and expected results.

Prolotherapy is a very effective treatment for many forms of musculoskeletal pain. This is because prolotherapy targets ligaments, cartilage and tendon (LCT) structures that our often at the bottom of many pain syndromes. The musculoskeletal system has to be highly flexible and adaptable to physical demands while maintaining structural integrity. This is no small demand considering the constant movement of the human body.  LCT tissues stabilize and move bony structures along joints allowing the body a wide array of fluid movements. But LCT tissues can be injured just like any other part of the body. For example an unexpected step off a street curb and an injury might arise to the knee, ankle and or even one’s lower back. The stability of the body is what LCT structures are all about. Wear and tear to these tissues is a very, very common occurrence for the general public.   Athletic injuries can especially leave LCT tissues weakened and injured and in need of attention.

Now consider that unless there is a significant tear or destruction of tissue in an LCT structure there typically will not be positive findings with diagnostic imaging.  Unstable or injured LCT structures are for the most part not visible with modern diagnostic imaging.  LCT structures hold joints in stable positions based on the health of those tissues. A weak foundation leads to all sorts of problems in house, home and body. LCT syndromes are probably responsible for the vast majority of pain syndromes not corrected by conservative medical management (such as chiropractic and or physical therapy) when there are negative diagnostic imaging studies.

Try Prolo if More Conservative Measures Have Not Produced Results

What is Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy creates a regenerative process in injured and unstable ligaments, tendons and cartilage tissues.   This is done by injecting a solution of sterile water, 12.5 % dextrose solution (sugar water) and lidocaine at the bone/ligament interface. Research indicates that even what is called dry needling (no injectable solution) is proven to reduce pain when injecting in injured LCT tissues.  After a prolotherapy treatment LCT tissues heal and strengthen over a 4-6 week period. The strength of Prolotherapy is that it restores and regenerates the health of LCT tissues creating more stable joints and reducing associated pain.

Prolotherapy is a very safe effective treatment for all sorts of physical pains when compared to surgery

An Alternative to Surgery

More and more the public has growing concerns for surgical treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Surgery can be very helpful but it should be used as a last resort.  Prolotherapy in one study has been shown effective in managing patients that had a history of poor surgical outcomes (Failed Back Syndrome).  Pain Physician. 2005 Apr 8(2);167-83.

Mayo Clinic on Prolotherapy

As of April 2005, doctors at the Mayo Clinic began supporting prolotherapy. Mayo Clinic doctors list the areas that are most likely to benefit from prolotherapy treatment as ankles, knees, elbows, and the sacroiliac joint at the low back. The Mayo clinic reports that “unlike steroid injections — which may provide temporary relief — prolotherapy involves a more permanent strengthening and healing by stimulating tissue growth.
