How To Prevent and Reverse Autoimmune Diseases Naturally – By Dr. Ben Kim

Give Your Digestive Tract a Chance to Heal

Think of your digestive tract as your first physical line of defense against autoimmune illness, or any degenerative illness for that matter.

From your mouth to your rectal pouch, the lining of your digestive tract is continuous with the skin that covers your body. This technically makes your digestive tract lining similar to your outer skin in the sense that it acts as a barrier that protects your blood and inner tissues against undesirable substances in your environment.

Once the lining of your digestive tract begins to break down, if your genetic programming allows for it, you will begin to experience the antigen-antibody complex formation that occurs whenever incompletely digested protein leaks through your damaged digestive tract into your blood. The same goes for exogenous toxins like synthetic chemicals found in cosmetic products.

If you are suffering from an autoimmune condition, chances are good that your digestive tract is not as healthy as it can be, and that the effects of “leaky gut syndrome” and the formation of antigen-antibody complexes are contributing to your current symptoms.

How can you know with reasonable certainty that your digestive tract lining is not as healthy as possible? Leaky gut syndrome is not recognized by conventional medicine as a health condition, most likely because there are no clear-cut drugs or surgical procedures that can justifiably be prescribed for it.

The loss of lining integrity that we are talking about is microscopic, which doesn’t make it any less harmful than it is.

In general, you can safely assume that your digestive tract lining is in need of significant repair if you have symptoms of an autoimmune illness and you have one or more of the following symptoms of digestive tract dysfunction:

  • Excessive, foul-smelling gas production
  • Ill-defined discomfort in your abdomen following meals or even during meals
  • Chronic constipation and/or diarrhea

So how do you go about restoring the health of your digestive tract?

First, recognize that your body’s self healing mechanisms are already hard at work to repair any damage that exists within your body, including within your digestive tract.

Just as your body predictably works to heal a cut on your skin the moment the cut is created, your body is constantly on the alert for trouble spots throughout your body and will always work to repair damaged areas.

The difference between your digestive tract and your skin is that you can see your skin and clearly determine if your daily choices are helping or hindering your self healing mechanisms as they work to repair a cut.

Put another way, it is easy for you to see that when you keep a cut on your skin clean and protected against abrasive objects, your body can almost always successfully restore it to health. But when it comes to your digestive tract, it is not as easy for you to know how your daily food and lifestyle choices are helping or hindering your body’s attempt to heal damaged areas.

If you could see with your eyes how a specific food that you ate over lunch – say a hot dog or a turkey sub – was putting stress on your digestive tract lining and preventing it from making progress in healing, you would certainly be well motivated to avoid such foods.

Similarly, it isn’t obvious to your eyes how other foods, lack of rest, emotional stress, and other lifestyle factors are affecting the health status of your digestive tract.

9-Steps-to-Heal-Autoimmune-DiseaseThe good news is that you can learn – from this post and by listening to your body’s signals – how to best support healing of your digestive tract. And once your daily food and lifestyle choices consistently support your body’s ongoing efforts to restore the health of your digestive tract, recovery of your health is well within your reach.

When you want a cut on your skin to heal as quickly as possible, you know that you must do the best you can not to disturb that area. Leave it alone and let your healing mechanisms do exactly what they are well designed to do all the time.

This same principle applies to healing your digestive tract: leave it alone as much as possible. Do not give it any unnecessary stress.

Which takes us to our next major point…

Adopt Eating Habits that Facilitate Optimal Digestion

Perhaps the single most important eating habit that you can adopt to facilitate healing of your digestive tract is to chew your foods thoroughly.

Ideally, you want to chew your foods until liquid. When you chew well, you allow your digestive tract to efficiently break down small particles of food into micronutrients that can pass through the wall of your small intestine into your blood.

Your teeth are designed to mechanically break down food, while the rest of your digestive tract and organs are designed to chemically break down your food. Whenever you do not chew well, your digestive tract and organs take on the burden of trying to accomplish what is much easier for your teeth to accomplish.

If you have dental or jaw problems that make it difficult to chew well, consider blending your foods in a blender or a food processor.

Chewing your foods and liquids well allows your saliva and digestive enzymes to mix in with your foods and liquids, and begins the process of digestion right in your mouth.

Chewing well encourages physical and emotional rest while eating. And being emotionally balanced and at rest while you eat allows your body to send a rich supply of blood to your digestive organs during a meal, which helps to optimize every step of digestion.

If possible, strive to combine the habit of chewing well with a steady focus on feelings of gratitude for your food and other blessings. Just as the connection between your mind and body can cause you to sweat when you are nervous, having a feeling of gratitude while you chew your food can help your digestive organs break down your food and assimilate nutrients into your blood.

Once you condition yourself to chew well and to eat with a grateful heart, the next habit to adopt to promote optimal digestive tract health is to…

Avoid Eating More Protein than You Need

As mentioned previously, a significant cause of autoimmune illness is the formation of antigen-antibody complexes that can float around in your blood and get deposited into your tissues, which can cause inflammation and accompanying discomfort.

And a chief cause of formation of such immune complexes is the leakage of incompletely digested protein into your blood.

Chewing your food well will certainly help to minimize the amount of undigested protein that can make it into your blood.

But to stay optimally well, it is equally important to avoid eating more protein than your body needs.

In general, it is best to eat no more than half of your body weight of protein, in grams, per day. This means that if you weigh 150 pounds, you should strive to eat no more than about 75 grams of protein per day.

A three-ounce piece of beef, chicken, or fish contains approximately 25 grams of protein. And three ounces of meat equates to a serving size that is about the size of a regular deck of cards.

But don’t forget that every food that you eat, including fruits and vegetables, contains protein. So if you eat three ounces of animal-based protein for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you are almost certainly eating more than 75 grams of protein per day.

A cup of broccoli, cooked spinach, or corn contains approximately 5 grams of protein.

A cup of peas contains over 8 grams of protein.

Even a medium-sized potato contains almost 5 grams of protein.

If you eat plenty of vegetables and legumes, it is not difficult to get enough protein to be optimally healthy without eating any animal foods at all. I am not suggesting that you need to be a strict vegan for the long-term to recover from and prevent autoimmune illness. Rather, I am striving to illustrate how easy it is to eat more protein than you need, which is a critical mistake when addressing autoimmune illness.

My clinical experiences have led me to believe that animal-based protein, especially when cooked at high temperatures, tends to contribute to antigen-antibody complex formation in people with autoimmune illness more easily than plant-based protein.

To best support recovery from autoimmune illness over the long-term, I recommend eating no more than one three-ounce serving of animal-based protein per day, cooked using a low temperature technique, such as steaming or boiling.

If possible, I even recommend staying away from all animal-based protein for a period of six months to give your digestive tract complete rest from having to digest animal protein. During such a time, it is best to avoid eating large amounts of protein-dense plant foods as well, such as nuts, seeds, and legumes. So long as you eat plenty of vegetables, especially green ones like broccoli, lettuce, and cabbage, you will get plenty of protein for your daily needs.

After six months of avoiding animal protein and going light on protein-dense plant foods, you can gradually increase your protein intake until you are eating approximately one gram of protein per day for every two pounds of your body weight, with no more than one major serving of animal-based protein.

Now that we have emphasized how important it is to avoid over-consumption of protein, let’s take a close look at how you can choose to…

Eat Foods that Optimally Nourish and Cause Little to No Harm

The best food groups for preventing and reversing autoimmune illness are vegetables, whole grains, and fruits. Ideally, you want to eat just these food groups (with perhaps very small amounts of legumes) for a period of six months to give your body the rest and nutrients that it needs to best support a full recovery.

Eat a fresh salad every day that includes plenty of dark green lettuces and colorful vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, shredded zucchini, and shredded red beets.

For concentrated healthy fat intake, add an avocado, as well as a simple salad dressing made out of extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt, and a touch of honey if you like a little sweetness to your dressings.

Steamed vegetables are also an excellent food group for overcoming autoimmune illness. You can eat a lot more broccoli, kale, Swiss chard, red beets, and other hardy vegetables when they are steamed than you can when they are raw. Steaming such foods can actually help you extract more nutrients out of them.

Steaming can also soften the fiber found in these foods, which can be helpful if your digestive tract is sensitive to large amounts of raw fiber. Try eating steamed vegetables with healthy salad dressings or even soups that can serve as nourishing and flavorful sauces.

You can make vegetable soups by boiling vegetables and then running them and the water that they are boiled in through a blender or food processor.

Eating vegetables in their raw state allows you to benefit from naturally occurring enzymes that are destroyed with cooking.

Eating vegetables that are steamed or boiled allows you to eat more of them and extract more nutrients out of them than you can when they are raw. So eating bothraw and cooked vegetables positively diversifies your intake of health-promoting nutrients.

Freshly pressed vegetable juices provide intact enzymes, and because they are nutrients that have already been extracted from fibrous vegetables, they provide a concentrated batch of nutrients that are readily absorbed into your system and able to nourish your cells. If possible, do your best to include at least one freshly pressed vegetable juice in your diet on a daily basis. And if your life circumstances don’t allow for this, consider taking a high quality green food powder.

Whole grains like brown rice, millet, quinoa, buckwheat, and oats can provide you with plenty of complex carbohydrates that can take care of the bulk of your daily caloric needs. Whole grains are also rich in B vitamins and a wide variety of minerals.

Just be sure to soak whole grains in water for at least a few hours, preferably overnight, before cooking. Doing so makes whole grains easier to digest and also prevents potential problems with mineral absorption. The bran of whole grains contains a substance called phytic acid, which can bind onto calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and phosphorous in your digestive tract, preventing them from entering your blood.

Soaking whole grains helps to neutralize phytic acid and prevent such binding from occurring in your digestive tract.

As is the case with salads and steamed vegetables, adding healthy dressings and sauces to whole grains can make them an enjoyable staple in your diet.

Fruits are also a good choice for autoimmune illness, but you have to be careful about not eating more fruits than vegetables.

While certain fruits like berries, grapes, pomegranates, watermelon, and mangos are concentrated in health-promoting antioxidants, most fruits have a lot more carbohydrates and naturally occurring sugar (fructose) than they do antioxidants.

Actually, the majority of health-promoting nutrients found in fruits are in their skins and seeds. So when eating fruits, choose varieties that are rich in color and, whenever possible, try to eat their skins and seeds. Excellent choices include blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, pomegranates, mangos, papayas, apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, and some of the “super foods” that are becoming more popular with each passing day, such as goji berries.

Keep in mind that it is always better to eat fresh fruits rather than dried fruits. Dried fruits are heavily concentrated in natural sugars that can put stress on your blood sugar-regulating mechanisms, which can increase your risk of suffering from diabetes and other forms of cardiovascular disease.

Now let’s take a look at a three suggestions related to lifestyle choices that are not related to your diet…

Ensure Adequate Physical Rest

Do not overlook the importance of getting adequate physical rest as you seek to recover from autoimmune illness. Simply put, the more you rest, the more energy your body can devote to repairing damaged areas, including your digestive tract.

What’s most important is to get deep, restful sleep each night. It is during deep, restful sleep that your body produces large quantities of hormones that are directly or indirectly responsible for facilitating healing and growth of your tissues.

These hormones are growth hormone, testosterone, and erythropoietin. Your body produces these hormones in small quantities while you are awake and active, but in order to produce them in optimal quantities for healing moderate to severe degrees of autoimmune illness, you need deep, restful sleep on a regular basis.

Ensure Adequate Exposure to Natural Sunlight

Ensuring adequate vitamin D status is extremely important to treating and preventing autoimmune illness. And the safest way to ensure adequate vitamin D status is to regularly expose your skin to sunlight without getting burned.

UV-B rays in sunlight can convert cholesterol that is found in your skin to natural vitamin D. Amazingly, once you produce enough vitamin D through this mechanism, your body will not manufacture additional vitamin D until you need more, even with continued exposure to sunlight. This natural “stop” mechanism is important because you do not want to have more vitamin D than your body needs on a moment-to-moment basis; vitamin D is fat-soluble, and can therefore be stored to levels that are toxic to your body.

When sunlight is not regularly available, as is the case in the northern hemisphere throughout the late fall, winter, and early spring months, it is important to ensure adequate vitamin D intake through foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D.

Although some commercially available foods like pasteurized dairy and some cereals are fortified with synthetic vitamin D, it is best to eat foods that are naturally abundant in vitamin D. Foods that are naturally rich in vitamin D include wild salmon, sardines, cod liver oil, and organic egg yolks.

Get Clear on Why You Want To Be Well

Have you ever experienced a frightful dream that was so real that you woke up with a pounding heart or a coat of sweat on your skin?

Have you ever experienced a gush of saliva in your mouth while thinking about eating something tart like a fresh lemon?

These and other everyday experiences are proof that your thoughts and emotions can create real physical change throughout your body. Every single thought and emotion that you experience triggers countless chemical reactions throughout your body via your nervous and endocrine systems.

In recognizing how powerful your mind-body connection is, you can harness its power as you seek to recover from and prevent autoimmune illness.

Every time you strongly believe that you will experience a full recovery, your body moves towards that reality. Every time you start feeling sorry for yourself and believe that you will never be free of autoimmune illness, your illness becomes more deeply rooted in your physiology.

Harnessing your mind-body connection to facilitate a full recovery goes way beyond repeating affirmations to yourself, telling yourself that you believe you will be well. Affirmations are important and useful, but they must come from a place of genuine strength and conviction.

Using your thoughts and emotions to be well must begin with a careful evaluation of your core life values, beliefs, and desires. How

Erika’s Story – Healing From Lupus Naturally – Noelle Quero, C.H.H.C – Nutritional Healing and Detoxification Expert – South Florida and Nationwide

Nothing is more powerful than reading inspiring stories of one’s own healing journey. Back from the Darkness and Into the Light as I often refer to it with Client’s. So today I’m posting a story, of an amazing young lady, who was Diagnosed with Lupus at a very young age….in her very early 20’s, and ended up going through many very dangerous, un-necessary surgeries. This inspirational young woman was literally barely able to get out of bed when I met her. And now, she has a job doing what she loves, which is teaching, something she couldn’t even think about doing before. She is also living a full life with her husband and friend’s and Family. And, Erika is the NORM, not the Exception. I have personally witnessed hundreds of people FULLY RECOVERING from AUTOIMMUNE “DISEASES”. The BODY CAN ALWAYS HEAL!!! And, she had just BEGUN healing her body, this was after only 28 Days…and her healing just continued on from there. TOTAL BODY HEALING can take month’s, especially when it took the Body YEARS to BREAK DOWN and become so TOXIC and INFLAMED..BUT when you are persistent, and consistent and patient, the BODY TOTALLY HEALS. This is Erika’s Story:

“Before this process, I was really suffering daily with a multitude of symptoms such as anxiety, cystic acne, migraines, allergies, lower pelvic/bladder pain, stomach issues, rashes, and more. I had just had three minor surgeries including getting my gallbladder removed, a growth removed from my bladder, and endometriosis burnt out. Every day was a struggle, I was not happy, I was tired of feeling pain, overwhelmed with life, and just tired. The last year and a half was really rough; going to at least four specialty doctors and taking anywhere from four to 15 pills a day. These pills ranged from antibiotics, to hydro-condone, to steroids and even muscle relaxers. When I had h-pylori I took 15 pills a day, just crazy. I thought this was normal and I figured if doctors told me to do this it was best. I was unable to work and lay in bed all day, every day. My good friend had already worked with Noelle and had been begging me for months to contact her. I was of course hesitant and scared I wasn’t ready to do it. I contacted Noelle, this April and we began my four week plan. I began cleansing my body by eating whole healthy foods that would naturally detox and heal my body. It was really hard at first but I soon noticed a difference in my body and how I was feeling.

After the 28 days I am amazed and overwhelmed at how wonderful God is and His healing and how He used Noelle to show me and teach me what is true about our bodies and how they heal. I am now am off all medications including over the counter medications I was addicted to taking as well as caffeine which I drank at every meal. I have lost fifteen pounds of I’m sure pure toxins that was held up in my body and I am feeling so good. My headaches and allergies are gone, my rash that was covering my entire stomach as well as my thighs and arms is gone, my skin is clear, my anxiety is gone, and I am so happy!!! I now sleep through the nights and wake up feeling energized and ready to go. I don’t lie in bed all day anymore!! I still have some pain in random parts of my body, but believe me it is not nearly as painful as before. Noelle has taught me that detoxing and healing is a process and some days we have good days and sometimes they aren’t as good because my body has to relearn how to work properly. I know soon my body will be completely healed and restored and I am so excited for that day to come! I have learned so much and healed so much but my best accomplishment throughout this process has been the transformation of my mind and thoughts which of course lead to my anxiety. It literally brings me to happy tears to think about how I have improved so much in this area. For those of you who do not know, anxiety is crippling and uncontrollable. I fought myself for the longest time, so angry at myself that I could let myself worry, cry, and just get completely overwhelmed by things that did not matter. I had a hard time watching TV because everything would upset me or scare me. Not anymore, I am now focused and visualizing things that are pure, good, and positive. I see myself happy, healthy, with beautiful clear skin, no pain, whole, complete, and lacking nothing!! I am excited to just love myself, my family, and my husband and start our life together! I can see, in the future, my beautiful healthy children. I have Noelle and her knowledge to thank for this!

If you are hurting and thinking about working with Noelle, I’d say don’t waste many months hurting like I did. Pray and thank God that He led you to this website. Call Noelle!! You will be healed and your body will be restored. If someone like me who never ate vegetables before can completely transform her life and now LOVE veggies, than you can. Trust me, trust Noelle, and trust your body to do what God made it to do, which is naturally heal.

Thank you Noelle, words cannot describe how forever grateful I am to you and your dedication to my healing. I feel so blessed to have worked with you and thank God for you daily! I appreciate your encouraging emails and phone calls and a new friendship I have found in you. Best wishes always. ” <3 Erika

The Top Causes of All Autoimmune Diseases, Including Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Crohn’s Disease, IBS and Many More – By Dr. Ben Kim

You have countless immune cells in every corner of your body that are constantly working to keep you healthy by identifying, packaging, and eliminating harmful substances that have made their way into your blood.

If your immune system falters and begins to identify some of your own tissues as being harmful or unnecessary, it will work to attack and eliminate these tissues through an inflammatory response that can cause pain and discomfort in many forms – this is how autoimmune illness develops.

The specific tissue or groups of tissues (organs) that your immune system decides to attack is determined by your genetics.

But just because you have a genetic predisposition for an autoimmune illness does not mean that you are guaranteed to experience it sometime during your life, or that you cannot recover from it.

Genetic predispositions are largely triggered, maintained, and kept under control by environmental factors, namely, your diet, lifestyle, and how much stress you experience.

Ultimately, the development of autoimmune illness requires that your immune system begins to identify some of your own cells as being harmful, and that control mechanisms that are in place to prevent such “glitches” no longer do what they are supposed to in preventing such occurrences.

There are several theories that attempt to explain why and how these glitches occur. Rather than get into biochemical jargon that will not do much, if anything, to help you get better, we can explain these glitches in the following way:

Over time, as your cells are abused by lack of rest, lack of optimal nourishment, accumulation of waste products, and direct insult by excessive amounts of free radicals and toxins, your cells gradually become less efficient at eliminating waste products and exogenous toxins (toxins that are produced outside of your body).

Eventually, waste products and toxins may incorporate themselves into your cell membranes, and if this happens, your immune system may identify such cells as being old and damaged. At that point, your immune system will work to attack and eliminate such cells from your body.

How does your immune system go about attacking and eliminating such cells? By producing antibodies, attaching said antibodies to the cell membranes of cells that have been identified as old and damaged, and then sending other components of your immune system to destroy these antibody-tagged cells. Your immune system destroys such cells using a process of inflammation, which is why autoimmune illness is often accompanied by discomfort.

If your genetic predisposition is such that the majority of cells that are tagged to be destroyed are clustered around your thyroid gland, your health challenges may be attributed to a diagnosis of Graves’ disease. If your abnormal-looking cells are in the fatty, insulating sheath (myelin) that surrounds your nervous system, you may exhibit symptoms of multiple sclerosis. If your genetically weak tissues are those that line yourjoints, destruction of old and damaged cells in and around your joints may be diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis.

Ultimately, the underlying inflammatory process that accompanies autoimmune disease is the same for all of the following names that we have created for different groups of symptoms:

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) involves inflammation in the brain that typically occurs a few days or weeks after a vaccination or a viral infection.

Addison’s disease involves dysfunction of the outer portion of the adrenal gland.

Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that involves inflammation of the spine and pelvic joints.

Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) is a condition that affects the blood-clotting process, causing blood clots to form in veins and/or arteries.

Aplastic anemia is a condition whereby the bone marrow does not produce enough blood cells. It is often caused by an autoimmune attack on the bone marrow.

girlAutoimmune hepatitis involves inflammation of the liver.

Celiac disease is characterized by chronic inflammation of the first third or half of the small intestine, and is caused by exposure to a type of dietary protein called gluten, found in abundance in grains like wheat, oats, barley, and rye.

Crohn’s disease involves chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract.

Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 is characterized by low or non-existent production of insulin by the pancreas.

Goodpasture’s syndrome involves destruction of kidney tissue and bleeding in the lungs.

Graves’ disease is a form of hyperthyroidism.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) involves inflammation of the peripheral nervous system, and is also called acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, acute idiopathic polyneuritis and Landry’s ascending paralysis.

Hashimoto’s disease is a form of hypothyroidism.

Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura is characterized by a low platelet count, resulting in easy bleeding.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune condition that can involve inflammation in the following areas: skin, joints, heart, lungs, kidneys, and nervous system.

Multiple sclerosis involves nerve dysfunction due to demyelination of the central nervous system.

Myasthenia gravis involves intermittent weakness and fatigue due to a problem with communication at the junction of nerves and muscles.

Optic neuritis involves inflammation of the nerves that supply your eyes which can cause partial or complete loss of vision.

Pemphigus is characterized by the formation of blisters and raw sores on mucous membranes and skin.

Pernicious Anemia is a form of anemia (inadequate red blood supply/function) that is caused by a problem with absorbing vitamin B12, which is needed to form healthy red blood cells.

Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by joint pain and inflammation.

Sjögren’s syndrome involves destruction of glands that produce saliva and tears.

Takayasu’s arteritis is characterized by inflammation that narrows the lumen of arteries.

Temporal arteritis is characterized by inflammation in medium to large-sized arteries, mostly commonly in the head. It is sometimes called giant cell arteritis, and can lead to significant vision loss.

Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia is characterized by destruction of red blood cells by IgM antibodies.

Wegener’s granulomatosis involves inflammation of blood vessels, typically affecting the kidneys and lungs.

Diagnoses that are not universally accepted as being autoimmune in nature, but for all practical purposes belong in the same category of health conditions, include:

Alopecia is characterized by hair loss. Loss of random patches is called alopecia areata, while full body loss of hair is called alopecia universalis.

Endometriosis is characterized by endometrial tissue (tissue found in the uterus) being deposited outside of the uterus, causing pain and sometimes infertility.

Interstitial cystitis is a urinary bladder disease that is characterized by one or more of the following symptoms: intense, intermittent pelvic pain, frequent urination, a sense of urgency to urinate, pain with urination, and pain with sexual intercourse.

Psoriasis is a skin condition that is characterized by patches of rapidly-dividing cells that produce itchy, scaly, and inflamed lesions.

Sarcoidosis is characterized by granuloma formation in the lungs and sometimes throughout the body.

Schizophrenia is characterized by impairments in the perception or expression of reality, often leading to social and occupational dysfunction.

Scleroderma is characterized by excessive deposits of collagen throughout the body.

Ulcerative colitis is characterized by inflammation in the bowel, typically in the distal section of the large bowel and rectum.

Vitiligo is characterized by gradual loss of pigmentation in patches across the face and/or body.

All of these conditions may be caused, in part, by cells in the problematic regions becoming old, damaged, and congested enough to be tagged by your immune system as being ready for destruction and removal.

But there is another major mechanism by which all autoimmune illnesses can develop and worsen. Whenever any unnecessary, harmful, or unidentifiable substances enter your bloodstream, they get noticed by your immune system. In an effort to preserve your health, your immune system produces antibodies that seek out and attach themselves to these unwanted substances; these substances are generally referred to as antigens.

Once your antibodies attach themselves to antigens, antigen-antibody complexes are formed. Your immune system will work to eliminate these antigen-antibody complexes from your body so that the foreign antigens cannot harm your cells. But if enough of these complexes are formed, your immune system may not be able to eliminate them as quickly as they are formed. This can lead to some of these complexes getting deposited into different tissues, where they can cause inflammation and damage. Typically, the sites at which these complexes get deposited are determined by your genetic predisposition.

Causes of Antigen-Antibody Complex Formation and Ensuing Inflammation

Perhaps the most common cause of excessive formation of antigen-antibody complexes is having an unhealthy digestive tract.

From your mouth to your anus, your digestive tract is one long tube that is meant to extract nutrients out of your food and allow these nutrients to slip through into your bloodstream so that they can nourish your cells. While your digestive tract is designed for proper digestion and assimilation of nutrients, it is also designed to protect your blood and inner cells against undesirable substances that can become antige

ns that lead to antigen-antibody complex formation in your blood.

If you abuse your digestive tract long enough with poor dietary and lifestyle choices, it can begin to lose its ability to prevent harmful substances from en

tering your blood. The lining of your digestive tract can begin to break down, and the population of microorganisms that line your digestive tract can shift from being predominately health-promoting and protective bacteria to largely microorganisms that can break down your digestive tract lining, such as yeast, bad bacteria, and even parasites.

This state – where your digestive tract lining loses its ability to keep harmful substances out of your blood – is often called “leaky gut syndrome.”

Leaky gut syndrome can cause incompletely digested food to enter your bloodstream. And the most problematic incompletely digested food group in autoimmune illness is protein.

Your body expects to receive amino acids – the smaller constituents of protein – into its blood supply, not bigger molecules of protein (several amino acids linked to one another). So when incompletely digested protein enters your blood supply through an unhealthy digestive tract lining, your immune system identifies these molecules as being foreign and potentially harmful. Your immune system will quickly move to create antibodies that can attach onto chains of incompletely digested protein, forming antigen-antibody complexes. And you know what happens next. While your immune system will do its best to eliminate these complexes from your body, if enough of them form because you continue to have a dysfunctional digestive tract and you continue to eat large amounts of protein, some of these complexes will get caught up in various tissues in your body, leading to inflammation and pain.

Incompletely digested protein is not the sole group of substances that can contribute to autoimmune illness in this fashion. Any substances that your body cannot use for nourishment can potentially trigger the production of antigen-antibody complexes and ensuing inflammation. This is why it is important to be aware of common household and environmental toxins, and to do your best to decrease your exposure to them.

For example, great care should be taken to avoid unnecessary exposure to conventional cosmetic products. Lipstick, lip balm, and other products that are typically used around large pores have a relatively easy pathway to your blood supply. It is a well established fact that women suffer from autoimmune illness at a significantly higher rate than men; I have come to believe that this is, in part, due to the widespread use of cosmetics among women – this is a connection that has not been established in the medical literature, it is a personal hypothesis based on my own clinical experiences.

At this point, I hope that it is clear that autoimmune illness, no matter which specific one you are concerned about, is not a local problem in your body; it is a systemic problem that has multiple causes and should be addressed as such.

Put another way, if you want to maximize your chances of experiencing a full recovery and being free of autoimmune illness for the long-term, you must take care of every aspect of your health on a daily basis.

The Center’s 7,000 square feet incorporate a state-of-the-art facility housing a myriad of diagnostic and assessment tools and treatment equipment to optimize our service to our patients.

How We Do It

NHWC addresses all aspects of health (mental, emotional and physical) of disease and illness, which enables us to accurately detect points of deviation from perfect health, which we call the “source” points of disease. Because every individual is unique, we look at every patient/case separately when focusing on these interconnected aspects of health with the goal of eliminating the “source” or root of disease, and bringing the patient to a disease-free state of wellness.

We begin the process by selecting diagnostic tools appropriate for the specific condition of each patient. In most cases, we incorporate a combination of these tests and assessments in order to achieve the most complete and definitive readings possible. In addition to physical assessments, our diagnostic tools also indicate mental, emotional, physical and spiritual imbalances-all of which are contributing factors to a sound and accurate diagnosis.

Using these results, our team of multi-disciplined doctors and practitioners reviews each patient’s comprehensive profile. As appropriate, they make recommendations for treatment based on experience within their respective disciplines. The Center Director then directs the recommended therapies indicated by the team to form that patient’s “Comprehensive Treatment Plan.”

At the same time, each patient is introduced to our individualized Wellness Program, which is designed to prevent illness and achieve a much higher level of health and well being. This is as much an education process, incorporating various lifestyle and dietary changes, as it is medicine. As such, our Wellness Centers offer support and advice throughout the entire process. This includes ongoing education, lectures, seminars, supportive group sessions, individual counseling, tailored individual Wellness Programs and periodic wellness assessments. The Wellness Program offers the same comprehensive combination of resources and optimized wellness programs for healthy and non-healthy clients alike.

Our Mission

Why Biological Dentistry?

What’s the key benefit of coming to our dentist office?

Our dentists can help you understand many underlying health complications potentially related to the oral cavity that may otherwise go undetected. Contributes to the overall health and wellness of both the oral cavity and the body.

We’re A Full Service Center – Get a FREE Dental Evaluation

Biological Dentistry is an approach to dentistry that takes into account the physiologic and energetic relationships between the oral cavity and the body. It goes beyond the traditional, mechanical dental approach-filling a cavity, removing plaque or pulling an impacted tooth like a normal dentist office. Instead, Biological Dentistry integrates traditional dental services and body health while assessing which services should be sought with regard to overall priority.

The oral cavity-teeth, gums, palate, cheek, lips, tongue, jawbone, and tonsil area-is intimately connected to the rest of the body and therefore affects its health. Likewise, health of the body affects the mouth. So, for the sake of optimum overall health, when treating issues of the oral cavity and of the body, both dental and medical practitioners should consider factors outside their chosen area of expertise.

Alternative Cancer Therapy

Among alternative cancer treatment centers, Natural Horizons Wellness Center offers an alternative cancer treatment program that draws patients from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Unlike many traditional cancer therapy protocols, we take a holistic approach to treating cancer. We will start with a comprehensive health evaluation that takes account of many different internal systems so that we can develop the alternative cancer therapy protocol that is best for the unique situation that each of our patients are experiencing.

Cancer Treatment Overview

All cancer therapy should include focus on eliminating causative factors and directly fighting tumors-especially in latter-stage cancers. Furthermore, therapies should differ depending upon the type and causative agent(s) of the cancer.

Since cancer is a disease with multiple initiating factors, optimal therapy practices utilize a multi-pronged approach. Alternative cancer treatment approaches attempt where possible, to zero in on eliminating the significant underlying causes of cancer so that the body can heal itself.

Because the body’s immune system fights off and helps reverse many early cancer formations, all therapies need to address strengthening of the immune system to help the body fight any cancer cells that are formed every day.

What is Alternative Pain Management?

What Types Of Pain Issues Do You Treat?

At Natural Horizons our alternative pain management specialists deal with almost every conceivable type of pain. Regardless of the pain you may be experiencing, your overall immediate issue is a singular one, you want relief from pain, and you want it NOW! At Natural Horizons Wellness Center, our number one priority in working with every patient we see is to get them out of existing pain.

Why Is Our Pain Treatment Approach Unique?

We are unique in treating and managing pain, as we take an alternative careful holistic approach in working with the body, mind and spirit of each patient. Our pain managment specialists look at many elements within the patient’s lifestyle to identify all of the contributing factors that led to a pain driven condition. Whether acute or chronic, we need to uncover all of the reasons a patient experiencing pain, so that in carrying out our treatment plan we are complete in incorporating the necessary things that will prevent a recurrence in the future.  Here is what you can expect from our alterntive pain management approach:

All patients are scheduled to meet with Dr. Vishal Verma for a complete medical evaluation of pain issues.

All patients then undergo a complete muskuo-skeletal evaluation of pain issues with Dr. Verma.

A comprehensive treatment plan is then customized for the individual patient.  The treatment protocols will generally include one or more of the following:

Injections (trigger point, facet, etc.)

EMG evaluation

Spinal Decompression

Low Intensity Laser Therapy

Physical Rehabilitation

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

The patient is scheduled for the various components of the comprehensive treatment plan.

Our approach to pain treatment is multifaceted, as nearly all pain conditions are complex and usually involve a number of contributing factors. Each patient has an initial consultation with a medical doctor to not only examine the big picture regarding the specific condition, but also the patient’s overall medical history and current habits and lifestyle. The patient is then seen by our chiropractor, Dr. Verma, who performs a complete musculo-skeletal examination. The medical doctor and the chiropractor discuss each of their individual findings and develop an individualized comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.

Dr. Kelsey Klausmeyer, ND – Autoimmune Disorders, Migraines, Allergies, Thyroid Disease, Digestive Disorders, Hormonal Imbalance, Infertility, Chronic Fatigue – Naturopathic Doctor – Wichita, Kansas

About Dr. Kelsey Klausmeyer, ND

Dr. Klausmeyer’s interest in medicine began at an early age after suffering a severe car accident. Conventional medicine saved his life but was unable to address the lingering health concerns that persisted long after the event. It was in natural medicine that Dr. Klausmeyer found solutions to the chronic conditions left from the

accident, which prompted him to pursue studies in natural medicine with a feverish devotion. Since that time he has completed massage therapy programs at two institutions (Total Health Works in Wichita, KS and Bellevue Massage School in Bellevue, WA), a bachelors of arts degree in medical anthropology and pre-med from Hampshire College, an apprenticeship in 5 Element acupuncture, certification in craniosacral therapy and a doctorate of naturopathic medicine from Bastyr University. In addition to these studies, he has attended many weekend workshops and medical conventions on various topics to offer his patients the very best medical care possible.

Central to Dr. Klausmeyer’s philosophy is to alleviate suffering and that illness is not without meaning. He takes the time to understand his patients’ stories and to help them discern meaning from sometimes difficult conditions. His goal is to empower patients to be proactive participants in their care and make healthy decisions in everyday life. He is excited to get to know you and work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your needs.

CranioSacral Therapy

Every day you endure stresses and strains which your body absorbs. Your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues begin to tighten and potentially affect the brain and spinal cord. This chronic tension can compromise the function of the central nervous system and the performance of nearly every other system of your body.

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Starting with the weight of about a nickel practitioners evaluate your internal environment to locate and release any restrictions they find. Releasing these restrictions can help to improve the functioning of the central nervous system, naturally eliminate pain and stress, strengthen your resistance to disease and enhance your health and well-being. Upledger Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is effective for a wide range of health problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Migraine and other Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension-related Disorders
  • TMJ Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Emotional/Neurovascular Disorders
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Scoliosis
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Many Other Conditions

What To Expect From a Session?

A typical CST session will last about an hour, and takes place in a quiet room, with you remaining fully clothed and relaxed on a comfortable padded table. The therapist listens carefully with her hands to locate areas of tension or restriction, then, using gentle manual techniques will assist the body in releasing those restrictions. Craniosacral therapy may be used alone or combined with other subtle therapies to create powerful effects. The sessions are generally deeply relaxing, creating feelings of warmth or gentle pulsing in the areas the therapist is working on.

Naturopathic Medicine

Patients see Naturopathic doctors for many reasons. Some patients enjoy the extra time their ND spends with them to obtain a thorough history, listen to their story, provide medical counseling and explain their condition. Other patients feel safe seeing a holistic practitioner who has a medical education behind their recommendations. Whatever the reason, seeing a Naturopathic doctor can greatly improve your health and well-being.

How I can help you?

Problem specific visits/ wellness checks–to obtain assessment and treatment of a specific condition (such as food allergies, vitamin deficiencies and any healthcare concern) or to improve quality of health and well-being. Additional imaging and/or lab work and referrals to specialists may be necessary. Treatment may include botanical medicine, nutritional supplements, special dietary recommendations, exercise/ stretches, homeopathics, or any of the other services offered at InnerWorks.

Treatment focused visits– includes bodywork (craniosacral therapy, problem specific soft tissue massage), Naturopathic spinal manipulation and acupuncture for chronic conditions and overall well-being.

Nutritional counseling: provides additional support for patients’ with special diets.

“The squeaky wheel gets the grease” is not always the best approach in medicine as real problems often develop slowly and quietly. Regular visits to a Naturopathic doctor can help ensure that you are preventing disease, listening to the messages your body is giving you and maximizing your health and Well-being. If you are already having symptoms, schedule a visit to obtain assessment and treatment. Additional imaging and/or lab work and referrals to specialists may be necessary. Treatment may include botanical medicine, nutritional supplements, special dietary recommendations, exercise/ stretches, homeopathics, or any of the other services offered at InnerWorks.

Once a treatment program has been established, focused visits include bodywork (craniosacral therapy, soft tissue massage, muscle energy stretching). Naturopathic spinal manipulation and acupuncture for chronic conditions and overall well-being. These treatment alleviate the effects of stress on the body, assist with emotional and psychological well-being and are particularly helpful in cases of trauma, PTSD, motor vehicle accidents, sports injuries and conditions that conventional medicine has not satisfactorily treated.

In the next few months you will see additional Naturopathic services, such as:

Annual medical exams: female/male exams (including pelvic exam, pap smear, breast exam or testicular and prostate exam) lab work (lipids, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c, chemistry and metabolic panels, CBC with differential and more as needed) and imaging as indicated. See our statement about insurance coverage.

Constitutional hydrotherapy, ultrasound and electric stimulation treatments.

Applied Kinesiology

This is a system of functional analysis and treatment of the mind-body. The patient is assessed with a simple biofeedback process. Findings and problems are thought of in five categories: Structural (e.g. muscles, joints), Chemical (e.g. sensitivities, nutrition), Organ Stress, Mental and Emotional Stressors,Electro-Magnetics (e.g. meridian/acupuncture imbalances). Corrections are made using gentle pressure on tissues, reflexes and acupoints; homeopathics, supplements and lifestyle changes are recommended. In addition, Dr. Kraskow uses several electrical devices including Computerized Body Assessment.

Homeopathy is one of the most interesting, effective and misunderstood types of treatment. The generally recognized founder of modern homeopathy is Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician who coined the term "Homeopathy" (From the Greek, "like" + "suffering") in 1796. I will often ask my patients if they have a basic understanding of homeopathy, only to find out that they have misconceptions about what homeopathics are and how they work. Many people think that any natural remedy found in a health food store is a homeopathic which is not true. Hence, this article is here to clarify some basics about homeopathy.

Homeopathics are in a completely different class than pharmaceutical medications, herbs, vitamins or minerals. These other remedies are primarily chemical in their nature. You take them into your body and they react chemically with your body's systems. Homeopathic remedies taken into the body are thought to interact "energetically and/or informationally".

They are actually dilutions of substances (rather than the substances themselves) that are imprinted energetically. So how does this work? It is based on "The Law of Similars" and "serial dilution".

The law of similars is also known as "like cures like". Here's how it works. You start with a substance that if ingested, would create a symptom–lets say a runny nose. A homeopathic manufacturer takes that substance and processes it with a method similar to shaking, called succussion. The mixture is diluted several times (serial dilution) until the final product no longer has even a trace of the original substance. But, it does have the energetic imprint of the original substance, and the body recognizes that imprint. In the case of the runny nose, the body recognizes the energetic imprint of the substance that would create the runny nose. This brings the body's attention to any runny nose issue, and then the body responds, making corrections as needed. I particularly appreciate the fact that the body is encouraged to do the actual correction. The list of uses for homeopathic remedies is endless.

One of the fascinating things about homeopathy is that while the process of creating a homeopathic described above is most typical, homeopathy can also start with substances that taken in their original form are beneficial. An example of this would be Echinacea, an herb used to support immune function. This herb may be used in a herbal form or a homeopathic form. The homeopathic form provides the energetic imprint, stimulating the body's immune system.

One of the most important uses of homeopathy is to assist with mental and emotional stressors. These remedies help change a person's perspective (e.g. reducing anger, fear, trauma etc.).

Because they are non-chemical, they are significantly safer than any other kind of remedy – Safe, Effective, Natural, Non-Addictive.

The choice of which homeopathic to be used can be complicated. It is often based on the many aspects of the symptomatic picture. As a Kinesiologist, I scan neurological reflexes to assist in the choice. In addition, I use a computer to assess and generate homeopathic remedies.

Autoimmune Disorders: A 21st Century Phenomenon – By Jim Chialtas, L.Ac. – Acupuncture, Functional Medicine, Autoimmune Disorders, Pain Management, Thyroid Conditions, Nutritional Healing, Chinese Medicine, Gluten Sensitivity – San Diego, California

Autoimmune Disorders: A 21st Century PhenomenonBy Jim Chialtas, L.Ac. – Acupuncture, Functional Medicine, Autoimmune Disorders, Pain Management, Thyroid Conditions, Nutritional Healing, Chinese Medicine, Gluten Sensitivity – San Diego, California

Probably one of the most up and coming of serious medical problems facing Americans today is auto-immunity. An auto-immune condition is one in which the immune system works to attack a particular tissue in the body. This problem can lead to a huge variety of disorders including Type I Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto’s (auto-immune thyroid), and many many more. The title of this article is actually two fold. It points out that not only are our bodies fighting against themselves, but the medical establishment, and the population as a whole is also caught up in a system that is working towards self destruction.

Let me use the example of a recent patient of mine who came in with concerns about “feeling terrible.” She has been on Thyroid medication for a long time but does not feel that it is helping. After a simple blood test we discovered that she was not classically hypothyroid (low thyroid) as her doctors diagnosed her, but auto-immune thyroid. Her immune system is attacking her thyroid gland which of course led to deficiencies in her thyroid output. One particular antibody specific to her thyroid tissue was over 11,000. It should not be above 40! This indicates that her immune system is attacking her thyroid gland in a big way. Her doctors never caught this fact. It took going to an acupuncturist that she was referred to in order to find this information out. And it was an out-of-pocket expense. So in this case, and millions of others, the patient’s needs were not being met by the system. Therefore, the root of the problem is not being treated. Hence a medical system which has mechanisms in place that work to weaken and disable the people it is trying to help. I consider this an auto-immune condition of society at large.

The reason that these tests are not run on a routine basis in the mainstream is that the therapy would not really change either way. The mainstream medical model is very much a “replacement” model. By this I mean that if there is anything wrong with you hormonally they will prescribe for you replacement hormones. End of story. This most often ends up working against us, and usually does not help the symptoms of the problem for very long. When was the last time you heard of anyone taking thyroid medications that felt “great” about it? It just never happens. In fact in cases of auto-immune thyroid the antibodies that attack the thyroid gland also block the thyroid hormone receptors. It is the hormone/receptor interaction that allows hormones to act on our body. Without a good hormone/receptor interaction you have nothing! So this means that even with supplemental hormone therapy the person won’t feel better because the hormones won’t bind and stimulate the receptor like they are supposed to! It is a self defeating concept to give thyroid hormones to an auto-immune thyroid patient. And it beomes an important concept because 50 – 80% of all hypothyroid patients are estimated to be auto-immune thyroid!

Medical doctors do have some methods for treating auto-immune conditions which involves suppressing the immune system either chemically or by removing certain immune system glands. This lends itself to infectious diseases and a lifetime of worry over contracting a serious illness. In fact a common flu could kill you this way. There may be a time for this, but how about looking into safer and more effective alternatives first? Ones which work at the root of the problem. They are out there, and I can help you with them.

One basic concept is important to understand about all auto-immune conditions… No matter what problem you think you have, like the thyroid problem I mentioned above, it is now an immune system problem and not a problem with the particular organ or gland being affected. You can throw all the support that you want toward the effected organ and you will not get anywhere. You will continue to struggle and feel sick until the root of the problem is dealt with. Moderating the immune system is the only way to take back your health from conditions like these. Only once you have the immune system under control can you begin to effectively support the effected organ or gland.

Allow me the opportunity to help you or the people around you with these problems. Treating auto-immune conditions requires very specific analysis of the immune system. These tests simply are not being done in the mainstream medical system. And remember… Don’t let where you live stop you from contacting me. I can work long distance with great success. Call or email me today and set up a consultation. Let’s start the process of getting you back to feeling good again!

About IV Therapy

IV (intravenous) therapy is used to administer nutrients (vitamins and minerals) and other medicines directly into the blood stream.  Because this method bypasses the need for medicines to be absorbed through the digestive system nutrients are better able to tissues in need.  For instance high oral intake of nutrients is simply not possible due to digestive/absorptive limitations.  One good example of this is the use of Vitamin C in trying to overcome a cold due to a viral infection.  The useful antiviral effects of Vit C are seen when 10-15 mg/dl.  This level is achievable with IV therapy but usually not with oral dosing.  Oral dosage usually peaks with levels at around  1.2-4 mg/dl vs IV therapy levels of 50-90 mg/dl.  Besides digestive/absorptive limitations our capacity to absorb can be altered through increasing age and digestive functional changes, the experience of stress, becoming immune compromised, experience of impaired digestive function, many chronic illnesses, etc.

Simply stated IV therapy patient’s blood nutrient levels rise more significantly then orally administration would ever allow for a number of reasons.   These optimal levels promote a generalized healing and have tremendous effects upon metabolism, energy and disease prevention and treatment.

IV formulas are specifically designed based on individual health needs. Specific blood tests 9i.e. Intracellular Nutrient and Antioxidant Testing) can be done to assess if there are any nutrient deficiencies.

Examples of Conditions Treated with IV Therapy:

Chronic Bacterial or Viral Infections

Chronic Sinus Pain and Infections

HCG Weight Loss:

Homeopathic HCG and Internet Programs:

are they effective and are they safe?

Actual HCG hormone, not homeopathic HCG, is a safe and effective program for weight loss.

The actual hormone HCG must legally be prescribed by a licensed doctor.

Many people are purchasing homeopathic HCG from the internet.  It is doubtful that homeopathic HCG will have the same results as the actual hormone HCG. Homeopathic HCG is diluted to such a point that it is completely unreasonable to expect any level of actual HCG hormone in homeopathic preparations. It is the hormonal action of HCG that is thought to produce weight loss along with a restricted calorie diet.   The benefits of homeopathic HCG weight loss are solely the result of a 500 calorie diet. It is not uncommon for people to come see me post homeopathy hcg/500 calorie diet with their hair falling out and trouble with metabolic recovery. Our programs starts at 1000-1200 calorie diets. People report not being hungry on this program and typically are very pleased with their weight loss, typically 3-5 lbs a week.  I’m yet to experience any metabolic down regulating affects as in a 500 calorie homeopathic diet programs….homeopathic hcg is not the hormone Hcg.

Our Modified 1000 Calorie Hcg Diet:
To be successful in losing weight it must first be determined by a medical professional if there are any possible medical conditions that are in the way of weight loss.  A series of questions followed by appropriate lab work if necessary will determine if there are medical issues that need to be addressed.  Sound nutritional counseling will ensure keeping the weight off for the long run.

There is no need to start with a 500 calorie diet.  Our modified hcg program blends a limited caloric intake (starting at 1000 calories) with a ketogenic diet (20-60 grams of carbohydrates a day).  When the body consumes low carbohydrates it must start breaking down fat reserves to meet blood sugar needs. Ketogenic diets mean limited bread, rice, pasta, potatoes and corn. Of course this also means absolutely no soda, candy or processed snack foods. Fruit and complex vegetable carbohydrates are allowed in limited quantities. In our modified hcg program we teach you to count calories to achieve Hcg success while also counting carbs to achieve ketogenic success.  Hcg causes increased utilization of fat reserves during a limited caloric intake while the ketogenic shift towards decreasing carbohydrates further demands the use of fat reserves.  This combination is a winning  rapid weight loss program.

This initial approach is usually all that is needed for most people to lose between 3-5 lbs a week.

Natural Medicine and Hypothyroid

There is no need to stay fatigued because conventional medicine does not have the answer to your fatigue!

Many Natural Medical Answers to Hypothyroid

Bioidentical Hormones

Supplemental medicine geared at symptoms and lab findings

Environmental Treatment: exposure to Halogens such as Fluoride and Bromine can impair Iodine and thyroid function.

Thyroid function and adrenal function are one very important hormonal relationship.

A Big Myth About Hypothyriodism:

Have you been told that your blood work rules out thyroid issues?

Do you still have all the typical symptoms listed at the top of this page?

Have you had fatigue and weight gain ever since pregnancy?

If the answer is yes, then………………..

You are probably Hypothyroid!

The conventional diagnosis of hypothyroidism rests on both a high blood Thyroid-stimulating-Hormone (TSH) and a low level of the inactive thyroid hormone  thyroxine (T4).  TSH, produced in the brain, stimulates the production of T4, produced in the thyroid, which is then converted to T3 which is the active thyroid hormone.  But many people with hypothyroid have normal TSH and T4 levels.  This is because these two indicators alone are not sensitive enough for all cases of hypothyroidism.  There are a number of tests that can be performed that more adequately assess thyroid function.

An Easy at Home Test:

Many health experts believe the basal body temperature-the temperature of your body at rest-is the most sensitive test of thyroid function. The test is simple all you need is a thermometer.

Plan to take the test first thing in the morning after you wake.  this is because it is important to measure your temp after a full nights sleep.

Before you go to bed shake down your thermometer to below 95 degrees and keep it by your bed.

Immediately upon waking, place the thermometer under your armpit, held in place by your arm pressed agaisn’t your side for a count of 10.

Read and record the temp and the date.

Repeat the test for at least 3 days at the same time of day.

An average reading of between 97.6 and 98.2 is normal.  Anything lower could indicate hypothyroid.

Note: Menstruating women have to take the test upon their second, third and fourth day of menstruation.  Men and post menopausal women can take their temp at any time.
It is now widely believed by a large body of researches and doctors that these blood indices alone are insufficient for uncovering all cases of hypothyroidism or otherwise under active metabolism.

Has Standard Thyroid Medicine Fallen Short: covering all the possibilities

There are a number of considerations that should be addressed.  In general hormones tend to work together and have many effects upon each other.  Environmental considerations at times can block receptor function and lead to low T3 levels/hypothyroidism.

Anemia and other conditions can express as fatigue and need to be considered.

Estrogen dominance this is where there is more estrogen then progesterone-this is typical of perimenopausal.

Low Testosterone – can mimic many of the symptoms of hypothyroid.

Altered Adrenal Function: responsible for the stress response as well as metabolism and energy. Depleted hormones such as Cortisol and DHEA can increase the demands upon the thyroid.

Heavy Metals may be blocking the conversion of T4 to T3-inactive to active hormone.

Prolotherapy: an impressive solution to all sorts of physical pains

Get Pain Free

Heals and regenerates injured tissues.

Very effective.

The major alternative to surgical procedures for chronic pain.

Needle procedure treats interface of ligaments, tendons and or cartilage.

Easy to assess need and expected results.

Prolotherapy is a very effective treatment for many forms of musculoskeletal pain. This is because prolotherapy targets ligaments, cartilage and tendon (LCT) structures that our often at the bottom of many pain syndromes. The musculoskeletal system has to be highly flexible and adaptable to physical demands while maintaining structural integrity. This is no small demand considering the constant movement of the human body.  LCT tissues stabilize and move bony structures along joints allowing the body a wide array of fluid movements. But LCT tissues can be injured just like any other part of the body. For example an unexpected step off a street curb and an injury might arise to the knee, ankle and or even one’s lower back. The stability of the body is what LCT structures are all about. Wear and tear to these tissues is a very, very common occurrence for the general public.   Athletic injuries can especially leave LCT tissues weakened and injured and in need of attention.

Now consider that unless there is a significant tear or destruction of tissue in an LCT structure there typically will not be positive findings with diagnostic imaging.  Unstable or injured LCT structures are for the most part not visible with modern diagnostic imaging.  LCT structures hold joints in stable positions based on the health of those tissues. A weak foundation leads to all sorts of problems in house, home and body. LCT syndromes are probably responsible for the vast majority of pain syndromes not corrected by conservative medical management (such as chiropractic and or physical therapy) when there are negative diagnostic imaging studies.

Try Prolo if More Conservative Measures Have Not Produced Results

What is Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy creates a regenerative process in injured and unstable ligaments, tendons and cartilage tissues.   This is done by injecting a solution of sterile water, 12.5 % dextrose solution (sugar water) and lidocaine at the bone/ligament interface. Research indicates that even what is called dry needling (no injectable solution) is proven to reduce pain when injecting in injured LCT tissues.  After a prolotherapy treatment LCT tissues heal and strengthen over a 4-6 week period. The strength of Prolotherapy is that it restores and regenerates the health of LCT tissues creating more stable joints and reducing associated pain.

Prolotherapy is a very safe effective treatment for all sorts of physical pains when compared to surgery

An Alternative to Surgery

More and more the public has growing concerns for surgical treatment of musculoskeletal pain. Surgery can be very helpful but it should be used as a last resort.  Prolotherapy in one study has been shown effective in managing patients that had a history of poor surgical outcomes (Failed Back Syndrome).  Pain Physician. 2005 Apr 8(2);167-83.

Mayo Clinic on Prolotherapy

As of April 2005, doctors at the Mayo Clinic began supporting prolotherapy. Mayo Clinic doctors list the areas that are most likely to benefit from prolotherapy treatment as ankles, knees, elbows, and the sacroiliac joint at the low back. The Mayo clinic reports that “unlike steroid injections — which may provide temporary relief — prolotherapy involves a more permanent strengthening and healing by stimulating tissue growth.

Functional Medicine Doctors Treat The Causes Of Auto-Immune Disease – By Dr. Ionela Hubbard – Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine, Acupuncture, Integrative Cancer, Holistic Healing Doctor – Santa Ana, Loma Linda and Orange County California

You're probably familiar with the most common autoimmune diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease, type-1 diabetes, hypothyroidism, and psoriasis. But there are many more autoimmune diseases that affect the nervous system, joints and muscles, skin, endocrine gland, and heart. In fact, the incidence of autoimmune disease has tripled in the last few decades, affecting 24 million Americans. More women are suffering from autoimmune diseases than heart disease and breast cancer combined. Autoimmune diseases are conditions where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues rather than a foreign invader like a virus or bacteria. This happens when something confuses the immune system. That "something" appears to be the enormous load of environmental toxins to which we are all exposed, and which creates a reaction against the self.

Environmental Toxins and Autoimmune Disease

Over 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into our society since 1900, and only 550 have been tested for safety. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about 2.5 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released yearly by large industrial facilities. Also, 6 million pounds of mercury are discharged into our air every year. The 2005 “National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals" – found an average of 148 chemicals in our bodies. And those were only the ones for which they tested.1  More recently, the Environmental Working Group examined the umbilical cord blood of newborns and found 287 industrial chemicals, including pesticides, phthalates, dioxins, flame-retardants, Teflon, and toxic metals like mercury. These fetuses had been exposed to these toxins before they were born! (see Detoxification) Let’s not forget the pesticides found on our foods and those found in our homes as cleaning agents and pest control products, which add to our bodies’ total toxic load.

When it comes to toxins, I practice and recommend the precautionary principle, which says that we should avoid anything with the potential for harm. In the US, something has to be proven harmful before it is taken off the market. In Europe, something has to be proven safe before it is allowed on the market. This is also known as "better safe than sorry."

Dr. Douglas Kerr, M.D., Ph.D., professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, says in his foreword to The Autoimmune Epidemic that "there is no doubt that autoimmune diseases are on the rise and our increasing environmental exposure to toxins and chemicals is fueling the risk. The research is sound. The conclusions are unassailable."

Although, it is clear that environmental toxins are a major cause of autoimmune disease, conventional medicine does not take that into account when treating autoimmune conditions. Unfortunately, it attempts to shut down the patient’s immune response with powerful medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil or Aleve, steroids like prednisone, anti-cancer drugs like methotrexate, and new drugs like Enbrel and Remicade that block the effects of a powerful inflammatory molecule called TNF alpha. These new drugs often provide only partial relief, while they induce frequent and serious side effects and shut down your immune system so forcefully that they increase your risk of cancer or life-threatening infections. These drugs may be lifesaving for some in the short run — but in the long run they do not address the cause of your illness.

Functional Medicine – Treating the Causes of Your Autoimmune Disease
If your roof is leaking, would you get an umbrella or do you fix the roof? Using the Functional Medicine approach, I have been treating many patients and watched them turning their health around by successfully addressing the underlying causes, such as toxins, infections, allergens, poor diet, and/or stress. I have treated patients with severe arthritis, psoriasis, chronic fatigue, bloody diarrhea and pain of ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, etc. For each one of them, I had to identify and resolve all the causes of their disease (i.e., toxins, allergens, infections, poor diet, and stress).  Then together, we designed a healthy lifestyle program, which provided the things their body needed to function optimally, like whole, clean food, nutrients, exercise, stress management, clean water and oxygen, emotional and spiritual support. When patients follow the functional medicine approach, the results are amazing.

Do you suffer from an autoimmune disease? Here are my recommendations

  • Get tested for mercury and other heavy metals and unburden your body
  • Get tested for celiac disease, an autoimmune reaction to wheat and other gluten-containing grains, which causes over 60 autoimmune diseases
  • Identify your source of inflammation and treat it
  • Test and eliminate all allergenic (inflammatory) foods from your diet
  • Improve your immune function using a plan-based diet and supplements, including vitamin D, beneficial Omega-3 fats, and probiotics.
  • Practice stress reduction techniques
  • Improve your body's own detoxification system.
