Who We Are / What We Provide

Natural Horizons Wellness Centers (NHWC) are leaders in the field of Integrative Medicine and Wellness.

Through a colaborative effort of many practitioners, and using state-of-the-art practices, protocols and therapies, we offer each patient the best that conventional medicine and the alternative disciplines have to offer via an integrated comprehensive treatment plan designed specifically for each patient.

Our Wellness Centers offer these integrated medical/dental assessments and related services in one location in each market that we service.

Our Integrative Medical and Wellness Center, located in the heart of Fairfax, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C., is the prototype for all Natural Horizons Wellness Centers throughout the country.

With an active census of over 10,000 patients, its 14 practitioners work in symphony with each individual patient in creating a truly integrative approach to healing. The Center’s 7,000 square feet incorporate a state-of-the-art facility housing a myriad of diagnostic and assessment tools and treatment equipment to optimize our service to our patients.

How We Do It

NHWC addresses all aspects of health (mental, emotional and physical) of disease and illness, which enables us to accurately detect points of deviation from perfect health, which we call the “source” points of disease. Because every individual is unique, we look at every patient/case separately when focusing on these interconnected aspects of health with the goal of eliminating the “source” or root of disease, and bringing the patient to a disease-free state of wellness.

We begin the process by selecting diagnostic tools appropriate for the specific condition of each patient. In most cases, we incorporate a combination of these tests and assessments in order to achieve the most complete and definitive readings possible. In addition to physical assessments, our diagnostic tools also indicate mental, emotional, physical and spiritual imbalances-all of which are contributing factors to a sound and accurate diagnosis.

Using these results, our team of multi-disciplined doctors and practitioners reviews each patient’s comprehensive profile. As appropriate, they make recommendations for treatment based on experience within their respective disciplines. The Center Director then directs the recommended therapies indicated by the team to form that patient’s “Comprehensive Treatment Plan.”

At the same time, each patient is introduced to our individualized Wellness Program, which is designed to prevent illness and achieve a much higher level of health and well being. This is as much an education process, incorporating various lifestyle and dietary changes, as it is medicine. As such, our Wellness Centers offer support and advice throughout the entire process. This includes ongoing education, lectures, seminars, supportive group sessions, individual counseling, tailored individual Wellness Programs and periodic wellness assessments. The Wellness Program offers the same comprehensive combination of resources and optimized wellness programs for healthy and non-healthy clients alike.

Our Mission

Empower consumers and practitioners with the highest level of integrative medical and dental health services, education, training, research and consumer products, all aimed at achieving the best clinical results. Continue to assist each and every patient, child or adult, on his or her journey to optimal wellness.

Why Biological Dentistry?

What’s the key benefit of coming to our dentist office?

Our dentists can help you understand many underlying health complications potentially related to the oral cavity that may otherwise go undetected. Contributes to the overall health and wellness of both the oral cavity and the body.

We’re A Full Service Center – Get a FREE Dental Evaluation

Overview

Biological Dentistry is an approach to dentistry that takes into account the physiologic and energetic relationships between the oral cavity and the body. It goes beyond the traditional, mechanical dental approach-filling a cavity, removing plaque or pulling an impacted tooth like a normal dentist office. Instead, Biological Dentistry integrates traditional dental services and body health while assessing which services should be sought with regard to overall priority.

The oral cavity-teeth, gums, palate, cheek, lips, tongue, jawbone, and tonsil area-is intimately connected to the rest of the body and therefore affects its health. Likewise, health of the body affects the mouth. So, for the sake of optimum overall health, when treating issues of the oral cavity and of the body, both dental and medical practitioners should consider factors outside their chosen area of expertise.

Alternative Cancer Therapy

Among alternative cancer treatment centers, Natural Horizons Wellness Center offers an alternative cancer treatment program that draws patients from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Unlike many traditional cancer therapy protocols, we take a holistic approach to treating cancer. We will start with a comprehensive health evaluation that takes account of many different internal systems so that we can develop the alternative cancer therapy protocol that is best for the unique situation that each of our patients are experiencing.

Cancer Treatment Overview

All cancer therapy should include focus on eliminating causative factors and directly fighting tumors-especially in latter-stage cancers. Furthermore, therapies should differ depending upon the type and causative agent(s) of the cancer.

Since cancer is a disease with multiple initiating factors, optimal therapy practices utilize a multi-pronged approach. Alternative cancer treatment approaches attempt where possible, to zero in on eliminating the significant underlying causes of cancer so that the body can heal itself.

Because the body’s immune system fights off and helps reverse many early cancer formations, all therapies need to address strengthening of the immune system to help the body fight any cancer cells that are formed every day.

What is Alternative Pain Management?

What Types Of Pain Issues Do You Treat?

At Natural Horizons our alternative pain management specialists deal with almost every conceivable type of pain. Regardless of the pain you may be experiencing, your overall immediate issue is a singular one, you want relief from pain, and you want it NOW! At Natural Horizons Wellness Center, our number one priority in working with every patient we see is to get them out of existing pain.

Why Is Our Pain Treatment Approach Unique?

We are unique in treating and managing pain, as we take an alternative careful holistic approach in working with the body, mind and spirit of each patient. Our pain managment specialists look at many elements within the patient’s lifestyle to identify all of the contributing factors that led to a pain driven condition. Whether acute or chronic, we need to uncover all of the reasons a patient experiencing pain, so that in carrying out our treatment plan we are complete in incorporating the necessary things that will prevent a recurrence in the future.  Here is what you can expect from our alterntive pain management approach:

All patients are scheduled to meet with Dr. Vishal Verma for a complete medical evaluation of pain issues.

All patients then undergo a complete muskuo-skeletal evaluation of pain issues with Dr. Verma.

A comprehensive treatment plan is then customized for the individual patient.  The treatment protocols will generally include one or more of the following:

Injections (trigger point, facet, etc.)

EMG evaluation

Chiropractic

Spinal Decompression

Low Intensity Laser Therapy

Physical Rehabilitation

Acupuncture

Cranio-Sacral Therapy

The patient is scheduled for the various components of the comprehensive treatment plan.

Our approach to pain treatment is multifaceted, as nearly all pain conditions are complex and usually involve a number of contributing factors. Each patient has an initial consultation with a medical doctor to not only examine the big picture regarding the specific condition, but also the patient’s overall medical history and current habits and lifestyle. The patient is then seen by our chiropractor, Dr. Verma, who performs a complete musculo-skeletal examination. The medical doctor and the chiropractor discuss each of their individual findings and develop an individualized comprehensive treatment plan for each patient.

There Are New Alternatives For Gum Disease Treatment – By Dr. Roman Shlafer, DDS, PLLC – Holistic Dentist, Biological Dentist, Pain-Free Dentist, Mercury-Free Dentist, Laser Dentist, Cosmetic Dentist – Farmington, Detroit, Livonia, Michigan

PerioLase is the latest laser treatment for gum disease. What is laser gum treatment? Laser Periodontal Therapy™ utilizing PerioLase is an advanced technique that Dr.Shlafer uses to treat periodontal disease, saving many teeth that had been previously considered hopeless.

A laser light is used to gently remove harmful bacteria and diseased tissue from the gum pocket. This allows the body to heal naturally so that the gum pockets improve and the teeth become more stable. The Laser Periodontal Therapy™ is a wonderful treatment to bring patients back to a healthier state.

There are dramatic patient benefits:

Significantly less traumatic, yet highly effective alternative to traditional “cut and sew” gum surgery.

With no cutting of the gum tissue with a scalpel and no stitches, it means an easy recovery with minimal bleeding and very little time off work.

This treatment option preserves your gum tissue, rather than cutting it away like traditional surgery.

It reduces root exposure and sensitivity.

It reduces infection.

The cost is the same as traditional surgery and covered by most insurance plans.

Who Is A Candidate For This Therapy?

Anyone that has moderate to severe gum disease is a candidate. These are patients with gum pockets of 5mm or greater and bone loss.

Who Can Perform This Procedure?

Only specially trained dentists can provide PerioLase. This requires licensure from the FDA and certification from the Institute for Advanced Laser Technology. Dr.Shlafer is one of the first dentists in America to have this distinction.

The Procedure:

After measuring the bone loss, a tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is inserted between the teeth and gums. The infection is gently cleared away leaving healthy newly sterilized tissues.

Because there is no cutting or stitches, people don’t experience the pain and bleeding associated with traditional gum surgery. This impact for treating gum disease is similar to that of Lasik laser surgery for eyes.

This is gum therapy that you don’t have to fear……………call for a complimentary evaluation to see if you are a candidate for the revolutionary PerioLase Laser Perio Therapy - (248) 918-4205 - www.romanshlaferdds.com

How To Eliminate Tooth Decay Naturally - By Dr. Alex Shvartsman, DDS, MAGD – Holistic Dentist, Biological Dentist, Biomimetic Dentist, Laser Dentistry, Cosmetic Dentist, Pain-Free Dentist, Ozone Dentist – Smithtown, Hauppauge, Commack, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York

To answer this question we need to go back…back in time.   You may not realize this, but tooth decay was virtually nonexistent 10,000 years ago.  In fact, tooth decay is a relatively modern disease when we look at the 2 million years humans have been living and evolving on this planet.  Tooth decay as well as many other diseases are what used to be called “diseases of civilization” until it became politically incorrect.  However, it is a very fitting name and it includes cardio-vascular disease, strokes, heart attacks, many cancer, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, food allergies, and autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, Alzhiemer’s, multiple sclerosis, vetiligo, psoriasis, etc.

Approximately10,000 years ago humans began transitioning form living as hunter-gatherers to farming.  Agriculture has turned out to be a double edge sword. It allowed humans to develop civilization and technology at the expense of our health.  Today at the highest point of human civilization and technological achievement we are sicker than we have ever been before and it is going to get worse!  We went form a diet that we evolved to eat for 2 million years, a diet that gave us our large and impressive brain, to a diet that in the short 10,000 years of agriculture and processed foods that is full of foods that are foreign to our metabolism.

We evolved eating a diet of meat, fish, poultry (and the fat that came along with these animals) and seasonal veggies and fruit.  Skeletons of our ancestors showed perfectly straight teeth with zero cavities.  These skeletons also showed people with strong robust bones with muscle insertions similar to today’s top athletes. Of the little over 200 remaining pockets of hunter gatherers left today none of these people show any signs of tooth decay or any other disease of civilization.

Our agricultural diet is full of foods that we are not designed to eat. These foods include grains, legumes, dairy, plant oils and exorbitant levels of fructose found in processed food and unnaturally sweet fruit that are available to us year round.  The unnaturally enormous levels of carbohydrates as well as antinutrients and toxins found in these “evolutionarily foreign” foods are making us sicker and sicker.

Grains and legumes are the seeds of plants. Since plants have no claws, teeth or legs the only defense against their seeds being eaten is biologic chemical warfare: toxins and antinutrients. Enough of these chemicals survive heating and digestion to wreak havoc on our health.  Dairy is also an unnatural food.  We are the only mammals on this planet that drink the milk of other mammals into adult hood.  Milk makes babies grow and cow babies need to grow FAST! Not only is milk loaded with proteins that are toxic and allergic to humans, it is full of natural (and sometimes unnatural) growth hormones.   Plant oils are loaded with omega 6 fatty acids that are pro-inflammatory and unnatural to our diet. Fruits have been bred to be large and sweet and are now available all year and together with High Fructose Corn Syrup found in everything form ketchup to soda are overloading our liver with fructose and destroying our health and teeth.

So if you want to stop cavities and cure yourself form “diseases of civilization”, begin eating and moving like our Paleolithic ancestors did. For further reading on this subject I encourage you to read: The Paleolithic Solution by Robb Wolf, The New Evolution Diet by Arthur DeVaney, The Paleo Diet (2010 edition) by Lauren Cordain and Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.  Visit www.Archevore.com and real the blog form the earliest entries to the present.  I wish you all great health!

Anxiety Free Dentistry – Frequently Asked Questions on Reducing Dental Anxiety

 Q. Why do you need to have regular dental care check-ups?

A. Regular check-ups are needed to monitor your overall oral health. In addition to checking for cavities, your dentist examines the health of your entire mouth and surrounding soft tissues, checking for pre-cancerous or cancerous lesions, oral sores, and gum disease.

Your oral health is connected with your general health. Dental care check-ups can alert the dentist to other medical conditions that have symptoms in the mouth such as diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, and hormonal irregularities. Regular dental care visits are vital to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other conditions affecting your mouth.

Q. What can you do to feel more relaxed during a dental care appointment?

A. With the combination of modern anesthetics and new conscious sedation dentistry technology and techniques, many procedures only have minimal discomfort or are now entirely painless. Dental care providers want their patients to have maximum comfort and approach their treatments with a relaxed attitude and less dental anxiety.

There are a number of ways to decrease dental anxiety:

Tell the dental care staff your concerns. Studies have shown that talking about your fears of possible discomfort actually reduces pain.

Use visualization to picture yourself relaxed, or repeat messages that have a calming effect.

Play your favorite music on a walkman you bring with you (some dental offices are equipped with walkmans, too.)

Arrange a signal with the dental care staff, such as raising your hand, if you need a break or feel discomfort.

Some dental care offices are now offering patients new options for stress-relief: hypnosis, self-hypnosis instructions, relaxation tapes, soft lighting, warm gel-filled eye masks, scented candles, and massaging pillows. These are helpful in reducing stress in patients that suffer from dental anxiety. Be sure to avoid the use of stimulants such as caffeine prior to your visit.

Q. Aromatherapy has a relaxing effect for many people. Is this effective for patients undergoing dental treatment?

A. Research studies conducted at Case Western Reserve University have noted that the use of aromatherapy has a significant positive effect on dental anxiety patients. Two-thirds of the patients receiving aromatherapy were more calm and relaxed than those patients without exposure to the scented fragrance oils.

Dentists are concerned about your comfort. Ask your dental provider if aromatherapy is available in the office to help reduce dental anxiety, or if you can bring your own for your dental care visit. Essential fragrance oils are available in health food stores, spas, and some grocery and drug store outlets.

Q. Are dental patients who are considered at risk for bacterial infections advised to take antibiotic medication prior to their appointments?

A. Certain medical conditions, such as heart valve problems or a recent total joint replacement, are considered at risk for infection at the site of the cardiac abnormality or joint replacement. This infection results from bacteria from the mouth entering the bloodstream and working its way to these vulnerable areas.

Consequently, dental care procedures likely to result in bleeding from the gums or mucous membranes will require patients to take antibiotics prior to that procedure. Such procedures could include, but are not limited to, extractions, implant surgery, incision and drainage for oral infection, and professional teeth cleaning.

Guidelines have been established by the American Heart Association and the American Dental Association to provide dentists and physicians with information regarding appropriate regimens for antibiotic therapy. It also outlines those situations when antibiotic therapy is or is not indicated.

There also are other medical conditions warranting antibiotic therapy prior to dental procedures. Be sure to update your dentist regarding your medical history. Your dentist and/or physician will advise you of any special needs.

Q. Where can you receive dental services if you do not have the money to cover the related expense?

A. If you do not have either dental insurance or the money to pay for a dental visit, you should inquire about financial aid from various sources within your community.

You may need to make several calls, but the local dental society, the local public health department, or social service agencies may be able to direct you to sources of assistance. Also, check local hospitals, dental schools, and outreach clinics that may be able to provide dental services at a reduced fee.

I’m proud to offer you laser dentistry for the treatment of many types of cavities. The laser works by emitting a specialized light that targets and destroys dental decay.

Drills are very powerful, and the vibration and the large hole produced can cause discomfort, making some type of anesthesia almost always necessary. With a laser, the light works to destroy and remove decay with no uncomfortable tooth vibration and resulting discomfort. Because the laser is so precise, the decayed part of the tooth often can be selectively removed, leaving a more healthy part of the tooth. Rather than that loud drilling sound, you hear only a gentle tapping.

Needle-Free injections

Dental injection without a needle! No you are not dreaming. Needle free dental anesthesia is a reality at State of the Art Comfort Dentistry.  Dr. Shvartsman has dedicated his careed to prociding comfortable dental care to his patients.  This is why he is always on the look out for new technology to make dentistry a painless as possible. The Syrijet is a device that adminisgered dental local anesthetic with a puff of air instead of the dreaded needle.  Patients that are afraid of needle injections in their mouth really love this device.  For everyone the injection process is painless.  Patietns experience a rapid pop form the puff of aneshtetic that is delivered via air pressure into the gum.

Digital 3-D X-Rays

In his ongoing effort to bring you the best of what dentistry has to offer,  Dr. Shvartsman is the first general dentist on Long Island to offer the benefit of Digital 3-D x-ray scans to his patients.  The Galileos Cone Beam system was installed May, 2010.

Now Dr. Shvartsman’s patients will fully benefit  from the revolutionary cone beam Digital 3-D technology of the Galileos. At State of the Art Comfort Dentistry the doctors and dental hygienists are no longer limited to interpreting 2-D x-rays and make “educated guesses”.  A quick 14 second outside the mouth scan is all it takes. Patients will not have to suffer through 18-22 uncomfortable individual inside-the-mouth x-rays. This is especially great news for people with a high gag reflex, small mouths or who have difficulty taking conventional x-rays.

With the Galileos images Dr. Shvartsman can see inside the bone and teeth in 3 dimensions, making diagnosis more exact and accurate.   This translates more predictable and safer treatment outcomes. The Galileos gives vastly more information with 4 times less radiation than a complete set of digital x-rays and 80-100 times less radiation than traditional CAT scans. In addition, both jaws and the sinuses are clearly seen with the 3-D Galileos scan, while a complete set of 18-22 individual 2-D x-rays only show the teeth and a little bit of the surrounding bone.  In fact, physicians such as ENTs, are now referring their patients to Dr. Shvartsman for Galileos scans.

If you have lingering pain or a problem that eluded diagnosis, we welcome you to take advantage of superior diagnosis with the Galileos 3-D cone beam technology at State of the Art Comfort Dentistry. We are proud to be the only General Dentistry office on Long Island to offer the Galileos 3-D x-ray scanning technology to our patients.

Laser Dentistry

Dr. Shvartsman of Smithtown, Long Island, uses Dental Lasers as part of his dedication  to providing you with the most comfortable dental care possible. That is why we offer Laser Dentistry as an alternative to traditional techniques. We currently use 4 different lasers in our laser dental practice.

Laser Cavity Scanner: The Diagnodent
Most dentists use a sharp-pointy pick to check for cavities. You may have this instrument stuck in your tooth in the past. Not only can this be painful, but a sharp-pointy pick coming at your face is not a comforting experience if you are already nervous at the dentist. The fact is cavity detection with this technique is only about 60% effective; many small cavities go unseen and can become large cavities if left untreated. This can lead to unnecessary root canal treatment, crowns or extractions.

In our office we use the Laser Cavity Scanner called the Diagnodent. This laser is over 90% effective in painlessly finding event the smallest cavities early, when they can be treated conservatively with a small filling. In many cases you do not even need a shot! We are thrilled to offer this gentler and more effective laser dentistry diagnostic tool to our patients.

Laser Fillings: The Er:Yag Dental Laser

This dental laser allows us to treat cavities without the use of shots and Novocain. Over 90% of patients do not feel anything at all during treatment, and those who do say it wasn’t bad enough to need a shot. You can have a filling done and go have a meal, give a speech or meet with a client without the worry of looking and sounding funny from a numb lip and face.

Laser Gum Disease Treatment: Nd:Yag laser

Gum disease is caused by bacteria deep under your gums and around your teeth.  Moderate and advanced gum disease is traditionally  treated with surgery whrre the diseased gum and bone is surgically cut away. Although this procedure shrinks the pockets the tooth roots are exposed. Many patients complain of tooth sensitivity nad increased root cavities anas well as esthetic concerns.

At State of the Art Comfort Dentistry  we offer a Laser microsurgery alternative: using the Nd:Yag Laser. This technology is extremely effective at vaporizing diseased gum tissue and bacteria from around your teeth. A Biologic adhesive clot is then developed with the laser to help reattach the gums back to your teeth. Tis is followed by Laser Bio-stimulation to speed up healing and reduce discomfort.  We have had great success with this form of laser gum disease treatment

DRILL FREE DENTISTRY : The ICON Revolution

Until now, dentists have had only two choices in the treatment of small cavities, dentally known as incipient caries: use fluoride to restore enamel through remineralization   OR “watch and wait” until it is time to “drill and fill.”  ICON represents an entirely new, revolutionary approach to treatment of incipient cavities – a resin infiltrant. Developed in Europe over the past decade, ICON is the subject of numerous international studies proving its effectiveness. This breakthrough micro technology fills and reinforces demineralized enamel without destructive drilling or painful shots.

Dr. Shvartsman is known for being at the fore font of dental innovation as well as his commitment to patient comfort. Now with ICON he can treat your small cavities without drilling, injections and “watching” the cavity get bigger.  ICON provides a revolutionary, never-before-seen option for treatment of white spots and incipient cavities between the teeth. Instead of taking a “watch and wait” approach, ICON can arrest the progress of early enamel cavities up to the first third of dentin – in one simple procedure, without unnecessary loss of healthy tooth stru cture, that means NO MORE DRILLING!

Fluoride therapy, as well as other remineralizing agents, take many months to accomplish and are not always effective because remineralizing protocols require daily application and are dependant on patient compliance. Besides, many of our patients are opposed to fluoride use. Mechanical removal of decay whether by drilling or laser almost always sacrifices healthy   healthy tooth structure.

White spots on your teeth are the result of weakened, demineralized enamel. They are often the first sign of the start of a cavity. Many patients find these white spots unsightly.   ICON can cosmetically remove white spots in just one visit! This provides a highly esthetic alternative to destructive treatments of cariogenic white spots – all in one simple treatment, with no drilling, no shots, no noise and in just 10 minutes per tooth!

ICON treatment enables Dr. Shvartsman to immediately treat cavities not yet advanced enough for conventional restoration and ends the “watch and wait” approach. It stops tooth decay progress without unnecessary loss of healthy tooth structure.  ICON allows for a conservative cosmetic treatment of unsightly cariogenic white spots in one short visit. There is no injection required, for optima l patient comfort. No drilling is necessary, eliminating the drilling noise and tooth destruction. Patients with poor compliance to remineralization protocols are excellent candidates. ICON is not just minimally invasive dentistry . . . it is micro-invasive. Ultimately there is prolonged life expectancy of the tooth.

Dr. Shvartsman is the first and only dentist in the Smithtown area to make this novel product to available to his patients.  Feel free to reserve an appointment to see if you are a candidate for ICON Drill-free dentistry. State of the Art Comfort Dentistry is now accepting new patients!

CEREC – Crowns in One Visit

Dr. Shvartsman lectures extensively on CEREC use and applications to his peers and is currently the President of the only Long Island based CEREC study club.  He uses his artistic talent to provide life-like all porcelain CEREC crowns, onlays and veneers in a single appointment.  In fact, many dentists and dental professionals have sought out Dr. Shvartsman to restore their teeth with CEREC.

Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people aren’t aware that technology is also impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. One breakthrough instrument, called CEREC, allows dentists to quickly restore damaged teeth with natural-colored ceramic fillings, saving patients time and inconvenience.  There are over 10,000 CEREC providers in the united states and 25,000 world wide.  This is the future of dentistry.

Dr. Shvartsman utilizes Biomimetic Dental principles when restoring your teeth.  He fits the restoration to the  missing part of your tooth like a jigsaw puzzle. This is in sharp contrast to traditional Civil War Era technique, used by the majority of today’s dentists, that fits the tooth to the restoration as done for traditional metal reinforced crowns where the tooth is drilled down to a nub or a stump n order to retain the crown.

We are proud to have upgraded to the latest CEREC technological upgrade the CEREC AC.  This new machine uses a new imaging camera: Blue LED for more accurate images and better resolution. That means more accurate and better fitting restorations for our patients.

What does this innovation mean for a patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more metal in the crowns causing black rings at the    or unnatural opaque looking teeth discoloring smiles. The restoration is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take messy ,  impressions moulds that make you gag and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second and third visit may be eliminated. Crowns do not need to be returned to the Dental Lab due to a bad fit. The CEREC has over a decade of clinical research and documentation to support the technology. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.

How can I find out if this is an option for me?

Feel free to call  631-361-3577 and ask us about CEREC. We will be happy to answer your questions about this exciting new technology.

Are You Still Getting Old Fashioned X-Rays When You Go To The Dentist? Digital X-Rays Equal 90% Less Radiation - By Dr. Jacques Doueck, DDS – Biomimetic Dentist, Cosmetic Dentist, Ozone Dentist – Brooklyn New York

A dental digital X-ray (radiography) system can take a picture of your teeth, then almost immediately show it to you on a computer monitor while you are in the dental chair. You no longer have to sit there for fifteen minutes and wait for X-ray film to develop…and develop.

The on-screen picture will look like an dental X-ray image but a lot bigger! Your dentist can zoom in on a single tooth, rotate it, sharpen it and colorize it – all to aid in your diagnosis.

Want to take home that stunning tooth image?
Your dentist can print out a color copy for you.

How It Works: We place a small, flat sensor in your mouth. The sensor is connected to a computer by a thin wire. Next, an X-ray beam is sent through your teeth and into the sensor, which records the image of your teeth and sends it to the computer. The sensor can then be repositioned to photograph other sections of your teeth.

Why It's Good: Your dental checkups take less time. Because the dental Digital X-ray system is more sensitive than dental X-ray film systems, your exposure to X rays is cut as much as 90 percent. The large and color-enhanced images let you see what your dentist sees, so it's easier for you to understand how your dentist will treat your teeth. Your fees don't include payment for photographic chemicals, film, processing or film storage. Used photo chemicals and film are not dumped into the environment. Finally, it’s a blast to watch this system work! Most patients are amazed.

Digital X-ray in Detail

Digital x-rays are an extremely progressive addition to our dental office. Digital x-rays are computer generated

images. These images require up to 90% less radiation than with conventional film type x-rays. Instead of using the traditional silver-oxide x-ray film that must be developed and then fixed in caustic and environmentally damaging solutions, the new system takes pictures via a small electronic sensor and it then instantaneously transmits a picture of the tooth onto the video monitor in the treatment room. Therefore, we can see your teeth and surrounding structures immediately. Not only does the new digital x-ray eliminate the usual wait for x-ray film to be processed, but it also is highly sensitive, so that patients are exposed to even less radiation than with conventional x-rays.

X-ray projections appear on computer monitors within a few seconds in full view so that both patients and our professional team can simultaneously view the results. The computer allows enlargement, highlighting, magnifying, inverting, clear viewing, and contrasting of x-ray photos. This new technology adds further benefits for our patients. We can detect cavities far better than with the old system, and sooner and smaller than ever before. That means that we can correct them sooner and easier for you, before they weaken tooth seriously. An example of digital x-ray is shown here in small size. You can envision what this would look like in a full screen dimension.

Forget The Drills! Laser Dentistry Is The New, Painless, Tool 21st Century Dentists Use – By Dr. Jacques Doueck, DDS – Biomimetic Dentist, Ozone Dentist, Laser Dentist – Brooklyn New York

Laser dentistry refers to any dental procedures that involve the use of a laser. Recent advances in laser technology have allowed many dentists to offer laser treatment. During a dental laser treatment a laser device that transmits a highly concentrated beam of light is used to treat tooth decay, enamel, and gum tissue. Common laser dentistry procedures include oral surgery or periodontal treatment (gum disease, gingivitis) often referred to as laser periodontics, cavity treatment, and teeth whitening.

It has been shown that dental lasers are safe for both children and adults. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several types of dentistry lasers for use on adults and children. Many of the lasers for dentistry are similar or identical in design to other medical lasers that have been used successfully for years in the specialties of ophthalmology, neurosurgery, Ear/Nose/Throat (ENT), and dermatology.

Advantages of Laser Dentistry include:

  • Minimal or no anesthesia
  • Minimal bleeding
  • More controlled swelling
  • Reduced postoperative infection/discomfort
  • Less chance of infection
  • Reduced time in dentist's office
  • Less pain
  • No noise (like a traditional dentist's drill)
  • Enhance effect of tooth whitening
  • No absorption of harmful chemicals
  • Improved bonding process
  • Quick removal of tooth decay
  • Longer lasting fillings · Faster healing
  • Preservation of tooth structure
  • A more sterilized environment (dental laser kills bacteria)
  • For the treatment of canker sore and herpes lesions,
  • the laser can actually decrease the pain experienced by these sores.
  • Laser Dentistry Procedures and Effects:

Laser dentistry or laser periodontics allows for the treatment of gum disease at any earlier stage. In addition, it can be useful to pregnant women and people with debilitating medical conditions. While there is no guarantee of total "pain free laser dentistry" discomfort is greatly reduced. By receiving dental laser treatments, patients often have no need for Novocain or other anesthetics! Dental laser treatment, often referred to as laser periodontal treatment, works well for treating canker sores and bacterial infections around teeth and gums.

During a treatment it is also common for the patient to wear protective glasses toprotect his/her eyes from continued exposure to bright light. The laser emits a tiny ticking sound-a far cry from the days of traditional dental drills. However, keep in mind that a laser might not be appropriate for all procedures. Today, many dental services can be performed with either the laser or traditional treatment, and are generally covered by most insurance plans. Your dentist should be able to determine whether or not laser dentistry is right for you.

LET IT SHINE
Diagnodent laser detection can catch problems before they begin

Diagnodent™ is a revolutionary new dental laser tool that safely and effectively detects changes on your tooth’s surface that might not be visible on a traditional x-ray. When this light source is directed at your tooth, anything unusual about the tooth’s surface – such as breakdown, or the start of a cavity – causes a different type of light to be bounced back to the instrument. This light is transferred into an audible sound. This lets us know what type of preventive treatment you might need. Diagnodent can even detect decay occurring under a crown, allowing us to quickly catch what could later be a problem. We want to ensure that every tooth remains yours for life, and that your visit to our office is comfortable and pleasant. Diagnodent is a unique development that will not only reduce your need for xrays; it will catch problems before they even get started.

Laser Is The Ultimate Dental Tool – By Dr. Jacques Doueck, DDS – 21st Century Dentist, Biomimetic Dentist and Ozone Dentist– Brooklyn, New York

21ST CENTURY DENTISTRY

I uses the laser for adults and children. The laser makes fillings faster and more comfortable. For kids, these pleasant early experiences will carry them into their adult lives with a positive attitude towards dentistry.

WHAT’S BETTER ABOUT LASER DENTISTRY?

The laser is so accurate that it can precisely clean out decay, leaving more healthy tooth structure than when using a drill. Studies have shown that up to 99 percent of children were comfortable enough with the laser that they didn’t need an injection! One of the greatest benefits is that the laser not only eliminates decay neatly and quickly – it also sterilizes the cavity, virtually eliminating the bacteria. There is less pain because as the laser cuts, it seals the nerve endings – it is kinder to the tooth than a drill. The main reason people put off going to the dentist is fear. They fear the drill, the needle, the pain and the noise. With the laser, many of these concerns are eliminated. Without the sound and vibration of the drill, adults and children are more relaxed. You don’t hear that loud whine that the drill makes. The laser is quiet – with only a soft popping sound.

HOW DOES A LASER WORK?

A laser uses a high intensity light beam and sprays water in front of it. The light hits the water molecules, creating tiny waves of acoustic energy. It is these sound waves that do the actual cutting in comfort and safety. Laser dentistry is useful even for very large cavities. Because the laser is able to sterilize virtually everything it touches, laser dentistry can ultimately prevent decay from spreading to the nerve. In the past several years, amazing advances in the technologies of dentistry have created tools for the dentist – based on laser technology – that were never before available. We now use lasers to treat gum disease. Here are some of the comments we’ve received from patients immediately following laser gum treatment:

“During the gum work I felt… nothing!” “I had regular periodontal work on the other side of my mouth – what a difference. The laser side it feels great.”

The technology is also useful on the diagnostic front. Diagnodent is a laser that we use to find hidden cavities, and it is safe even for pregnant women. Having a complete range of equipment available allows a dentist to be able to use the “right tool at the right time.” This is the real benefit to the patient. These hi-tech devices offer patients a newfound sense of relaxation about their visit to the dentist, and help provide them with a more natural smile and a comfortable, more enjoyable dental experience.

Why It Is So Important To Use White Fillings Instead Of Silver Amalgam – By Dr. Jacques Doueck, DDS - 21st Century Dentist, Biomimetic Dentist and Ozone Dentist - Brooklyn, New York

Are silver fillings better than White fillings?

I personally haven’t done a silver filling in 16 years and I wouldn’t have one done in my mouth. Many other dentists, however, swear that silver fillings are better. In fact, one hundred million silver amalgam fillings are done in the United States every year.

White fillings, for the back teeth, have always been considered less enduring than, and hence inferior to, silver amalgam fillings, but new materials are now available with properties comparable to silver amalgam, and these are proving to be very successful. The life expectancy of a white filling depends, to a large extent, on its location in your mouth and how heavily your teeth come together when you bite. Your dentist can advise you on the life expectancy of your fillings.

The history of white fillings on back teeth goes way back to the 1970s, well before the technology was available to do them well. In the mid-‘80s, the materials were improved thanks to new technology which was developed to bond to dentin. I started placing these restorations in 1984. While it is true that in the ‘80s, these composite restorations were functionally inferior to the old silver amalgam restorations, that is no longer the case, provided that they are placed with proper technique by an experienced practitioner.

With what we already know about mercury, if silver amalgam was a new treatment discovered yesterday, it would have virtually no chance of gaining FDA approval. Indeed, in the interest of protecting their citizens’ health, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Finland and Canada have recently taken steps to limit and phase out the use of silver amalgam restorations. Dental amalgam fillings consist of 50 percent mercury. Mercury, which is highly toxic, can leak from the fillings, and low grade chronic mercury intoxication can give rise to symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, fatigue, outbursts of temper, stress intolerance, decreased simultaneous capacity, loss of self-confidence, indecision, headaches, depression and a metallic taste in the mouth, among others. Higher doses of mercury can cause serious damage to the brain, central nervous system and kidneys. While we don’t know if the amount of mercury released from dental amalgam is enough to cause illness, I don’t feel it’s something to take chances with.

My personal advice is not to be overly assertive with your dentist about how you want your back tooth restored. Listen to the options presented; ask what your choices are and what the dentist recommends. If your dentist is not offering the option of white fillings for your back teeth, there is probably a good reason. Many dentists do not feel comfortable using these compositeson back teeth, which requires special training. Pressing your dentist to place a specific restoration – even if he or she feels uncomfortable performing the procedure – is almost certainly more dangerous than accepting their advice to use an alternative material.
