Six Guiding Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

1. Primum Non Nocere – First Do No Harm:

Naturopathic Medicine uses safe and effective therapies.

2. Vis Medicatrix Naturae – The Healing Power of Nature:

The human body possesses the inherent ability to restore its own health. The physician's role is to facilitate this with the aid of natural, non-toxic therapies.

Naturopathic Physicians seek and treat the underlying cause of a disease. Symptoms are viewed as the body's natural attempt to heal. The origin of disease is removed, or treated, so the patient can recover.

3. Tolle Causam – Discover and Treat the Cause, Not Just the Effect:

4. Tolle Totum – Treat the Whole Person:

Multiple factors in health and disease are considered while treating the whole person. Naturopathic Physicians provide flexible treatment programs to meet individual health needs.

5. Docere – The Naturopathic Physician is a Teacher:

The Naturopathic Physician's major role is to educate, empower, and motivate patients to take responsibility for their own health. Creating a healthy, cooperative relationship with the patient is therapeutically valuable.

6. Principils Obsta: Sero Medicina Curator – Prevention is the Best Cure:

Naturopathic Physicians are specialists in prevention. They assess patient risk factors and heredity susceptibility, and intervene appropriately to reduce risk, and prevent illness.

Natural Hormone Replacement
As the side effects of synthetic hormones become increasingly known, women are seeking safer alternatives. An individualized plan of natural hormone replacement using plant-based, bio-identical hormones can greatly aid PMS symptoms, infertility and female and male menopause.
Oxygen Therapy
This therapy was developed to minimize degenerative conditions due to aging and to support the immune system. Oxygen is breathed through a mask during exercise to increase oxygen supply to the organs and to increase the body's metabolic rate. Oxygen therapy is used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic infections, Lyme disease, and low energy.
Enzyme Therapy
The use of very specific enzymes to restore normal bodily functions. At times, a person deficient in only one enzyme can experience pain, anxiety, yeast overgrowth, constipation, fatigue, etc. By treating the deficiency with the appropriate enzyme, ailments can be resolved.
Herbal Medicine and Nutritional Supplements
Nutritional and herbal supplements stimulate the immune system, balance hormones and fight infection. Proper supplementation can mean the difference between sickness and health.
Homeopathic medicine has been used successfully for over 200 years by physicians worldwide. Homeopathy is based on the idea that "like cures like"; that very small amounts of a substance will cure symptoms that are caused by larger amounts of the same substance. Homeopathic remedies are very safe and extremely effective for treating children and infants.
Auricular Therapy
The ear contains acupuncture points that correspond to all parts of the body. Small pellets are placed on acupuncture points in the ear to exert constant pressure over the course of one week. This therapy is more subtle than acupuncture but is extremely effective for certain conditions.
Laboratory Testing
Blood Testing
This may include a CBC (complete blood count), Chem Screen or SMAC, Cholesterol and Triglyceride levels, Thyroid Hormone Levels, or other tests commonly used by the medical profession. This information is very important to appropriately diagnose physical illnesses.
Urine Testing
Depending on the physical ailment, a urine sample may have to be sent to a laboratory for detailed disgnostic testing. Usually, an in-office urine dipstick test will diagnose urinary tract infections and other acute illnesses.
Alternative Testing
Meridian Assessment
This assessment is performed by measuring the acupuncture points (without puncture), on the fingers. Points on the fingers correlate with organs in the body. By measuring these points, assessment of organ function is possible.
Enzyme Assessment
The most common reason for this assessment is for digestive problems such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, gas and bloating, etc., as the job of enzymes is to digest food. In addition to this, enzymes play large roles in bodily functions, such as in the healing of tissues, control of inflammation and allergic reactions, burning of fat, clarity of mental function, etc., making this test useful even if there are no digestive issues.
Vitamin Assessment
To detect vitamin deficiencies rampant in this country due to stress, poor dietary habits, and highly processed foods.
Mineral Assessment
To detect mineral deficiencies mainly due to the mineral-poor-soil that our food is grown in. Minerals are needed for proper immunity, digestive function, liver function, stress management, detoxification, brain function, and other crucial bodily functions.
Food Sensitivity Assessment
To pinpoint food intolerances which are common causes for headaches, fatigue, depression, insomnia, anxiety, migraines, and digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, reflux, and constipation.
Hormone Assessment

Most people think of hormones in terms of female hormones (estrogen and progesterone), or male hormones, (testosterone). There are also several other hormones including DHEA (which affects libido, weight loss and energy levels), and thyroid hormones (which affect metabolism).

Much press of late has stated that hormones are dangerous. This has only been shown to be true with synthetic progesterone and animal extracted estrogens. Natural Hormones are very useful if one is deficient in them. They should not be used if deficiencies are not detected.

Metabolic Assessment
This assessment looks at the functional levels of many substances including some which have a direct effect on metabolism. In addition, it also looks at other substances necessary for proper health. This assessment is most useful when someone has depression, anxiety, a history of heart disease, brain function issues, fatigue, and the inability to lose weight.

Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

Harness the Healing Power of Nature – The naturopathic physician works to restore and support the powerful and inherent healing mechanisms of the body and mind. Naturopathic medicine harnesses the vast potential of the natural world to stimulate the process of healing.

Identify and Treat the Cause – The primary goal of the naturopathic physician is to determine and treat the underlying causes of illness, rather than only the symptoms.

Treat the Whole Person – The naturopathic physician treats the whole person, taking into account the complex interaction of physical, emotional, dietary, genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

Educate – The naturopathic physician provides the knowledge and tools to empower the individual to become responsible for his or her own health.

First Do No Harm – The naturopathic physician chooses the least invasive techniques with the least potential to cause harmful side effects.

Maintain Health – The naturopathic physician applies all of the above principles in a proactive form of prevention against the development of more serious chronic or degenerative diseases.

As a Naturopathic Physician I treat the whole person, identify and treat the underlying cause of disease, and use natural medicines to restore and maintain health. I employ a variety of natural therapies, including:

  • Diet, Lifestyle, and Exercise Modifications
  • Herbal Medicine
  • Nutritional Supplements
  • Natural Hormone Therapy
  • Intravenous Vitamins, Minerals, and Herbs

In my practice I take the time to listen to my patients and to understand their problems.

If you're tired, depressed, chronically ill, or just looking for a better way to feel your best and prevent disease, naturopathic medicine is the right choice for you.

Naturopathic doctors are specialists in natural medicine who empower people to take control of their health and wellness.

Getting to the Root Cause

As a naturopathic doctor, I specialize in identifying the underlying causes of disease.

If you’re chronically ill and are not getting any better, are tired of side effects from conventional medicines, or have been told that your disease is "in your head," then you need a naturopathic doctor to determine and treat the cause of your illness rather than just its symptoms.

As an example, irritable bowel syndrome may be caused by an underlying food allergy, poor digestion, or bacterial imbalance.  I focus on identifying and treating these causal factors.

Bridging the Gap

With naturopathic medicine, you get the best of both worlds. As a physician I use standard laboratory testing, perform physical exams, order imaging studies such as x-rays and ultrasounds, and prescribe both over-the-counter and prescription natural medicines. In addition to this, as a naturopath I look deeper for the underlying cause of disease and restore health naturally.
